- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2008Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWinston Churchill is one of the few men whose name stands a good chance of being spoken by men as long as freedom exists. At 66, Churchill was called upon to rally a nation, an empire, teetering on the abyss of defeat.
And Churchill rallied his nation, his empire and the free world with his words.
A gifted orator and writer, Churchill authored 15 million published words. In this book are collected about 350,000 of Churchill's words in 4,120 quotations.
The editor, Richard Langworth, has done extensive research to validate the words as Churchill's own. It turns out that many follow the maxim of attributing words to Churchill that he had nothing to do with.
Churchill spent 50 years in public life. He was a soldier, journalist, Member of Commons, Lord of the Admiralty, member of the opposition, Prime Minister, world renowned author and more.
I've been an admirer of Churchill all my life. Many of the quotations are familiar to me. Yet, as they are categorized here, they take on a new life, a new perspecive.
Langworth begins with "The Immortal Words", the words of Churchill that will live forever in the memories of free men everywhere. The pity is that these words are rarely taught in American public schools. We will lose what we do not cherish and this means both the words of Churchill and our freedom.
Langworth progresses through Maxims, Churchillisms ("I have nothing ot offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat"), 34 sections in all that allow the reader to sense the full of Churchill and his words.
This is as remarkable book not only for Churchill admirers and students, but for those who revel in the beauty of the English language.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThere are many collections of Churchill quotes and anecdotes but none have the completeness, authoritativeness and pedigree of this one. Fully authorised by the Churchill estate, it also boasts a foreword by Lady Mary Soames (Churchill's youngest daughter) and an introduction by Sir Martin Gilbert (Churchill's official biographer).
This is an impressive piece of scholarship. Every entry is documented and many are annotated. And what entries they are! In each one of the thirty-four sections, one will find humour, wit, wisdom and inspiration, showing Churchill's statesmanship and mastery of the English language. This is a wonderful compilation to which one will return often.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2008Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseRichard Langworth has hit another grand slam with his new book, Churchill by Himself: The Definitive Collection of Quotations. This is an extraordinary work of scholarship that documents what Churchill said and didn't say. Like his previous work, A Connoisseur's Guide to the Books of Winston Churchill (unfortunately I lost mine in Katrina), Richard's meticulous attention to detail sheds pure white light on Churchill's quotations. It's about time someone cleared the air! The Bible, Shakespeare, Churchill, and perhaps Mark Twain with a dash of Teddy Roosevelt make up the lion's share of quotations used by business people and governmental speech makers. I'm no longer surprised how many quotations are attributed to Churchill which he never said or would have said. Now we can all get ground truth thanks to Richard Langworth.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseFine book. Author allows quotes to stand on their own, only organizing them chronologically or by topic (depending on what made sense per chapter) with light background where needed.
Being relatively new to Churchill, I wished I had a bit more of the author's perspective (but the author clearly states his purpose in the title and forward), and that the quotes were longer to provide more color.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2011Format: HardcoverVerified Purchase(This was book was a gift to my husband, who wrote the following review.)
I've long been a fan of Winston Churchill's mannered eloquence which, unfortunately, was ignored by his countrymen in the late 30s, but which roused them during World War II. This book outdoes all other books of Churchill quotes. It is broken into topics ("Germany", "World War I", "Science and Medicine", "Ripostes", etc.). Like many books of this sort - a compendium, rather than a structured narrative - one can dip into this at any point at any time, or if so disposed, just read it from front to back.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2009Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is the type of book you'll enjoy if you are a big Winston fan since it is simply as collection of his quotes on nearly every subject/person imaginable. a little dry and tedious perhaps and unless you love Churchill it will bore you. But I enjoyed hearing his words on many things relating to WWII. Such a fascinating man.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2011Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt is no surprise that the content is deeply satisfying;Churchill's charming wit and inspiring character are legendary. The editor's skill in discussing the context of the entries adds a great deal of value to both the famous remarks and those that are more obscure. As a Churchill enthusiast, it was easy for me to be excited and satisfied by the comprehensive catalogue of Churchill's work and by the first class scholarship of Mr. Langworth.A pleasant discovery, however, was the spectacular reaction I got each time I gave the book as a gift.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2009What an amazing book! Churchill's analysis is spot on, and in hindsight we see clearly how brilliant he was. If only our legislators were interested - there is plenty of advice for them in dealing with today's issues. This is a must read tome for those who want the full flavor of the events and consequences of WWII. The print is small, but well worth the effort.
