Michael Chabon Presents. . .The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist, Volume 1 Paperback – May 18, 2004

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

Leaping onto center stage from the wings of comics history comes that dazzling Master of Elusion, foe of tyranny, and champion of liberation - the Escapist. Operating from a secret headquarters under the boards of the Empire Theater, the Escapist and his crack team of associates roam the globe performing amazing feats of magic and coming to the aid of all those who languish in the chains of oppression. The history of the Escapist's creators Joe Kavalier and Sam Clay was recently chronicled in Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Now the best of the Escapist's adventures are collected into one volume for all to enjoy.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Fans of Chabon's Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (2000) who long to read the actual comic-book adventures of the Escapist, the superhero created by the novel's young protagonists, have recently had the chance, thanks to the comic book of which this is the first collection. It purports to repackage the "original" Escapist stories, dating from the 1940s. Scripting the Escapist's origin story himself, Chabon has enlisted contributions from leading comics artists and writers, including Howard Chaykin, Kyle Baker, and Chris Ware. The results seem rather inauthentic; attempting to copy the crude art and simplistic scripts of vintage comics would have been more audacious and perhaps more entertaining. There's no escaping the fact that these stories are just above-average mainstream superhero exploits that probably appeal more to comics aficionados than readers of the novel. Not nearly as impressive as the groundbreaking Kavalier-Clay collaborations Chabon's fiction suggested. Gordon Flagg

The character 'The Escapist' is actually a serious imitation of a fake historical comic character. So. This book - 'Michael Chabon Presents....The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist Volume 1: v. 1' - is a bogus collection of supposedly previously published Escapist issues. Each included issue in this collection has been drawn meticulously in the genuine style of whatever comic Art representation actually dominated the comic publishing industry of every decade since the 1940's.

This fake collection is a brilliant parody of an anniversary book issue of a beloved comic character. If The Escapist had been a genuine comic character first developed in the 1940's, and if the character had survived for decades through the changing art styles and artists and publishers that comics have undergone in real life up to the present, this particular graphic novel collection would serve as a genuine commemorative publication. Fans would have stormed their local bookstore to buy a copy and run home in a rush to encapsulate the book in a protective plastic jacket, hoping to sell it in 20 years for thousands of dollars. However, despite that it is a falsified historical collection about a fake historical super hero, the issues are drawn in the genuine style and the hero, 'The Escapist' is played straight like a real fictional comic Hero reminiscent of the genuine made-up heroes in the fantasy comic fiction we actually grew up reading.

My head is hurting, gentle reader.

The 'Best of The Escapist' comics which have been included are:

The Passing or the Key - origin story
Escapism 101 - written history of how the comic began

Followed by what I am sure would have been favorite top sellers representing the various epochs of 'The Escapist':

Are You Now or Have You Ever Been
    Sequestered
    Prison Break
    Three Hundred Fathoms Down
    Divine Wind
    The Escapegoat
    Luna Moth
    Reckonings
    Old Flame
    The Lady or the Tiger

I think people who enjoy literary jokes will like this fake collection best. It is well done, picture perfect actually, but, you know, fake.

This is the comic that grew out of Chabon’s "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay." This book is a compilation of the stories in issues 1 and 2 of that quarterly comic, along with some short essays that continue the fiction that this character and comic book were part of the Golden Age of comics, and continued thru many trials, tribulations, and mutations to the present day. The stories in this book include the origin story, as originally included in the original Chabon novel, but here done in comic style. (An interesting situation: in the original book Chabon gave the text version of the story that was supposedly told originally in the late 1930s in comic style. Here that story has given birth to the actual comic version of which it was supposedly summarizing.) It includes several other Escapist stories by different authors and illustrators, in very different styles. The essays explain this by saying they came from different eras, when the character had moved to different publishing houses and gone through various transformations to attempt to appeal to new readers in new eras. The book also includes some Luna Moth stories of wildly differing styles, and one true two-page “comic” story.
Overall, an interesting addition to the original Chabon novel, but certainly not strong enough to stand on its own. Some of the stories are interesting, but lack the depth of good narrative. It does provide an escape for the reader back to the days of his/her youth, though, a brief respite from adult concerns.
The back cover is especially clever, made up to look like an ad for novelties from the original Empire Novelty company, who became the publishers of The Escapist in the original book. Carefully read, all of the ads refer to things in the comic compilation itself, though, including an Absentee Father, and a Deluded Sense of Efficacy related to a simplistic view of good and evil as perpetuated in comic books. Someone had a good time writing that page!
This is a fun read for those who like the original Chabon novel, but would probably be a disappointment to those who just want a "comic book" that stands on its own.

So beautifully written, incisive, witty, gripping, completely original, and imaginative. Chabon has a the perfect story-teller's heart, I couldn't put the book down.

A few years ago, Chabon wrote a well-received novel, _The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay,_ about two comic book impresarios in the 1930s, `40s, and `50s. Their greatest creation was the Escapist. It's only fitting that the fictional character of a fictional author in a fictional comic book come to life in a real book. A dozen or so writers and artists come together to present a series of stories from the Escapist's career, rendered in the styles of four or five decades, and Chabon and Malachi Cohen surround them with relevant history and literary/artistic criticism. One of the main supporting characters, Luna Moth, also gets a couple of stories. The best thing in this volume, though, is "The Lady or the Tiger," supposedly published in 1976 -- and which Glen Gold's introduction makes clear was the literary peak of the (fictional) series. Finally, the classic comic book "advertising" on the back cover is a hoot, especially the bit on bar codes!

This was a very interesting read and the book arrived in perfect condition and on time. I would purchase again from this vendor.
The book itself was OK but without reading Kavalier and Clay, one would not really understand the story.

Firstly I knew nothing of the escapist going in. I was attracted to it via reading a post from brian k vaign (y the last man, saga) apparently he was a good magic escape artist himself in the past and was a fan of the escapist comics. He has written some stories that were collected in volume two. And a complete graphic novel that you can find for a good price on amazon. I am a Hugh fan of his work so I decided to give these ago. These collections are really interesting fun and are presented really nicely. You have history and articles as well as the comics which I found engrossing and informative. Overall give this a try if you like old comics written well drawn well and something completely diffrent.
