Although I'm not as well versed in the Austrian School of Economics as some of the intelligentsia who wrote reviews of Tucker's Jetson's World, I'd like to throw in my two cents. I found JT to be entertaining and insightful as always. He can reach Libertarians like myself who hunger for Liberty without having plowed through the tomes of the founding geniuses: Mises, Rothbard, et al. I consider Tucker an astute and understandable interpreter of the brilliant works of the Austrian School of Economics founders. The Beast I referred to in the title of this review is, of course, government. Free and fair markets work to our benefit!!! We who grew up in one of the free-est nations on Earth have reaped the rewards of Yankee ingenuity, innovation, technology, and prosperity. When the Beast interferes, we see the dynamic actions of the market and individuals hampered, manipulated, and slowed down. The Beast seeks full control, not excellence or efficiency. Watch out, my dear fellow Americans, who cherish Liberty!
If you want to understand why libertarians think the way that they do, and in a fun and enjoyable way, then this is your book.
It could not be a more fun read. The "private miracles" written about in this book show just what a joy the private sector of our economy is. The "public crimes" contrast to show how badly things work when the government gets involved.
I could not recommend it more highly.
If you want to be introduced to the ideas of freedom, then you can do no better.
The author is delightful to read. I suppose I should have given five stars but I felt the book a little uneven in that there were short articles on obvious topics with a few longer, less lighthearted pieces mixed in. This writer is my kind of libertarian. If you don't know his work, this and a slightly older book called Bourbon for Breakfast are both easily accessible and inexpensive to purchase for Kindle. If you like what you see, you can find other books and other information through this book. I recommend it!
Unfortunately the only thing about the coming revolution is the one paragraph in the introduction and its repetition on the back cover. I hate to say this but the title of the book defines the book itself perfectly. The Jetsons cartoon was infantile, pedantic, boring, puerile and insipid and sadly so is this work. Tuker's book is a stream of consciousness walk though libertarian issues that tries to copy Murray Rothbard's old essay style but fails miserably. Rothbard was far more intellectual, insightful and hard hitting, Tucker sad to say hits everything with a soft cushy pillow wrapped in marshmallow inanities. The entire work is like panning for gold, you have to sift through a ton of waste just to find very few widely scattered small nuggets.
The title and the work are perfect examples of false advertising. If you are below the 7th grade and have never read anything by a libertarian, then maybe this book is for you, but if you have read any of the greats, pass this book by! It's a waste of time and money.
At the same time I bought "Its a Jestons World," I bought Chris Andersons new books, Makers: The New Industrial Revolutionand The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More, and I have to say they lived up to that author's reputation greatly. The other books I would highly recommend other than this book, if you are very interested in the Techno-Optimist revolution, are the books I mentioned above in the first paragraph. Tucker needs to go back to the word processor and spend more time coming up with something a bit more palatable then this watered down pabulum. I expect a lot more from an Austrian affectionado then this!
This is an important book and the best non-fiction book I have read this year so far.
Reading this book elicited a great appreciation for the things I have taken for granted. In addition, the author explains how we can make the world a better place by not using force to solve complex social problems.
He also validates my frustration with those who claim that "capitalism" is to blame for current social and economic problems when what they are actually referring to is not capitalism but corporate fascism.
He debunks the myth that intellectual property encourages innovation and protects inventors when in fact the exact opposite is true, citing historical example after example and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
This book is well researched, well written, well presented and available in audio for FREE via Freedomain Radio.
I highly recommend considering the arguments he puts forward, as it may challenge your world view.
How often can I say that about a book? I listened to the reading by Stefan Molyneux, a brilliant thinker in his own right who also has voice acting talents, and experienced the whole book in one sitting. It is an UTTER DELIGHT. Great artists make the mundane appear miraculous. It is truly a miraculous world we live in. I will never look at a potato chip bag the same way again. Mr Tucker, I notice no other customer has reviewed your book, but if you spot this review, know that your efforts have made a tremendous difference to me and brought me an evening of much joy. More please!
