Conventional history is turned on its head

This is brilliant. I had been told that the ill-named "progressive" era was one in which downtrodden workers and overcharged customers managed through government to rein in the wanton monopolism of the "robber barons"; but Rothbard demonstrates that the reverse is the case. Big business had tried hard to form monopolies and cartels and had repeatedly failed, but in this Era succeeded in getting government power to provide them with legally enforcible cartels while pretending to abolish them.

There's much more; this work is a rare treat.

This is one of the best books written on the Progressive Era. His analysis that the two party system divided along religious lines as well as along statist or non-statist lines was surprising. However, his analysis is clear and well supported by documentation. The period between 1880-1920 made America into what it is today - National Socialist statist government. He also makes the case for WWI being the war to bring about the biggest changes in Western cultures. A must read.

I am still currently reading this book. I must say though, I am really enjoying it. The Progressive Era is an "edited" compilation of Murray Rothbard's notes and articles. Due to the excellent work done by the editor; it reads like a seamless volume. Many thanks to the Mises Institute for presenting us with yet another superb Rothbardian treatise!

It took a while to get into this book, but once I did it was really good. The author shows how relatively small groups of financiers worked with government to essentially cartelize oil companies , railroads, unions and banks. Lots of supporting arguments. While I’m not sure I agree with all of it, most of his arguments are really well done. Good read.

Packed With Information, At Times A Somewhat Difficult Read, But Provides A Different Viewpoint

This is an excellent, well researched economic history of America during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. This book is loaded with information. The author's analysis is very different from what I had previously been taught. While always excellent in terms of content, it is, at times, a slow read. There is good reason for this.

As I understand it, Murray Rothbard had assembled this prodigious body of information. He then died suddenly and unexpectedly. An editor, Patrick Newman, then put this product into a single comprehensible product for publication. I feel Mister Newman did a fine job under very difficult circumstances.

With the above situation in mind, there are times that the book lacks an easy flow. At times the book reads like a college textbook and sometimes like a series of research papers. That is not a complaint. Just know what you are getting. Additionally, I found, without really trying, five different passages that are repeated, word for word, in different chapters. Again, I really don't mean that as a criticism. Under the circumstances, if I were editing this work, I might have felt the need to keep certain passages, in tact, as written for fear of altering Mister Rothbard's message. I truly feel Mister Newman did a fine, professional job with this.

In summary, I am extremely glad to have had a chance to read this work. I learned a great deal and have rethought a lot about what I believed about this period. There were times I had to proceed very slowly and really concentrate. Speaking for myse, it was well worth the efffort. Thank You...
