Becoming Whole: Jung's Equation for Realizing God Hardcover – May 1, 2012
by
Leslie Stein
(Author)
In 1951, Carl Jung published what he considered the highest synthesis and exposition of the transformation of Self and the discovery of the divine in one of his latest and most difficult works, Aion. The equation’s complexity and uncharacteristic elements of mysticism have caused it to fall by the wayside in traditional Jungian and psychological analysis. No major work has tackled this fascinating concept until now.
Leslie Stein, a disciple of noted Jungian analyst Rix Weaver, here explores this groundbreaking equation to its fullest capacity. Tracing the roots of Jung’s research back to his influences in the world of the Kabbalah and Sufi mysticism, and grounding the more esoteric philosophy toward the modern sense of identity, Stein has produced both a rigorous work of scholarship on a major figure and a guide that challenges readers to reflect on our own truths.

Wow! I finished it! It was one of the most difficult reading experience. Now, I have never read anything Carl Jung, so I was completely unfamiliar with his terminology. This book for me was akin reading something in a foreign language that I am not familiar with, but can read letters. I muscled through it, and towards the end started understanding what author and Carl Jung were trying to convey, albeit I used Google and Wikipedia a lot for assistance. I didn’t awake to the desire to study Carl Jung. But I did decide to begin studying Ibn-Arabi, who was on my reading list already and his book was on my bookshelf waiting. I will also continue with Sri Aurobindo.
The author did a great job by reporting and interpreting the meaning without adding his personal bias. I really appreciated that.

I recently finished listening to the audio version and realized that there is so much there that is vital to understand that I went ahead and ordered the hard copy so I can take notes and absorb what is being shared. I won't go into the premise of the book, enough is said there. This is no introduction to Jung; the book delves deeply into the process of individuation and the strong parallels and differences between Sufism, the Kabbalah, and Indian metaphysical thoughts. The initial chapters on the equation were a bit dry and tough to follow, to be honest it may have had something to do with listening to the audio version while jogging(I still recommend the audio version as it is extremely well narrated)but once you pay the price of admission by hanging in, you are rewarded by stunning insights from different traditions on the nature of god and Man. I won't spoil it for anyone but suffice it to say that if you are familiar with the idea of the objective psyche and Jung's writing, you will find yourself on familiar ground and then pushed gently into new ones. Thanks to the equation that the author explains with great clarity, one is able to anchor in one's mind the process of individuation and relate it to some of the most profound mystic traditions out there. Blown away by this one and the great clarity brought to difficult subjects by the author; the book opened doors for me to explore further...next on my reading list will be Ibn Arabi and Sri Aurobindo...Many thanks to the author.

Terrible narrator. She mispronounced many important, significant words throughout audio. Technical advisor/editor is equally at fault. Made audio confusing and unlistenable.
