- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2018This book is wonderful! At times poetic, at times laugh out loud funny, and at times simply gorgeous, it was a lovely romp through a nostalgic time and place with the stellar language that only Kij Johnson can deliver. I enjoyed it tremendously.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2017I was transported back to the river side community of Toad, the Water Rat, Mole and Badger. The addition of two female characters are a welcome addition to the original cast of characters. This is a charming, enchanting and humorous book that should appeal to children as well as adults who wish to return world created by Kenneth Grahame.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2017I was skeptical when I read the glowing NPR review of this "fan fiction". But I was quickly won over by the author's prose and seeming ability to jump into the time and place of the original and carry on with a couple of new protagonists. I found myself wishing only that the story hadn't wrapped up so early and abruptly. Definitely worth the price for a nostalgic trip into a lovely fantasy world.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2017This was beyond fantastic.
Kij Johnson's language is so exquisitely perfect, I found myself forgetting this novel was published in 2017, and Kathleen Jennings is of course the perfect illustrator for this classic tale. Yet the novel isn't slavishly devoted to reproducing every aspect of The Wind in the Willows; Johnson chooses instead to affectionately revisit Grahame's world, while subtly critiquing its sense of unquestioned privilege.
Beryl is of course my favorite character, being both a practical Mole and an imaginative novelist. I love the passage where she visits the island of Pan with the River Rat. In a scene evoking The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Rat recovers his lost memories of the Piper and has a choice whether to follow Beryl into a visionary life committed to art. This book is touching and funny and inspiring.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2017Ms Johnson has beautifully reproduced the tone and sensibility of the original Wind in the Willows, only now with some fully realized female characters. A quick, but delightful read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2017THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS was one of the books I cherished most as a child and have reread often as an adult, so I was a little apprehensive when I picked up this sequel. That turned out to be needless; it caught the deceptively loopy charm and extreme Englishness of the original very well, and did some extremely interesting things with it. I liked it; I suspect Grahame would have liked it, or at least been intrigued.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2023Beryl Mole, authoress, is a delightful creature who brings new charm to the River society. I’m happy to have had this time with her.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2018What a delight - new adventures in the world of Ratty and Mole, and stodgy old Badger, and gloriously pompous Toad. I reread "Wind in the Willows" just before indulging in "The River Bank" - recommended, it picks up where the original left off, or so it seemed. My only regret is that this new volume isn't any longer than it is. More than once I felt a familiar wave of Kenneth Grahame in either a subtle turn of phrase, or understated humor, or overall length of sentence. The lush English countryside was everywhere. New characters lend interest, and the fact that they are both female brings a new perspective to life along the river. Breathe deeply and enjoy.

AnuragReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 13, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, as good as new.
The book is in immaculate condition. Looks like it has been never been read or even opened. Bought the used book expecting slight wear and tear but Amazon and Wonderbooks delivered better than my expectations. There are absolutely no issues with the book, extremely happy.
Book BeaverReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 24, 20194.0 out of 5 stars Even Yet Another Willows Sequel
This is probably the closest version to the original masterpiece by Kenneth Grahame that any sequel writer has managed since the four books by William Horwood. In appearance it has the 'regulation' twelve chapters, attractive endpapers which feature the principal characters as well as Portly and Rabbit and rather sketchy illustrations. The latter are in the style of Quentin Blake and Michael Foreman and appear rather inconsequential but there are full page illustrations at the start of each chapter.
Kij Johnson has written an engaging sequel in which two new residents appear on the River Bank to live in Sunflower Cottage when its owner Hare passes away. They are a mole named Beryl and her female friend Rabbit. Their interaction with the five stalwarts of all the other Willows tales, staunch Mole. sociable Ratty, dependable Otter, severe Badger and the irrepressible Toad leads to an enjoyable tale. There are rich descriptive passages that inform the reader of the English countryside and the contents of picnic hampers. However, there is also action and adventure as featured in this nostalgic return to Toad Hall, Mole End and the surrounding environment are a double kidnapping, lost letters, a series of sensational novels, two (threatened) marriages and family secrets.
