Prince Istari has spent his life reviled: his parents wish he had never been born, the royal court of Belemere avoids him for fear of angering the king, and everyone else is kept away by his notorious reputation as a deadly sharpshooter. Now a hostage of peace in Tallideth, he is subjected to their hatred as well—even that of Regent Vellem, who once considered him a comrade in arms. Unexpected solace comes in the form of Lord Teverem, a sad, quiet lord who assumed the title when his brother was killed in the explosion for which Istari's father is to blame. He is kind and sweet and a sorely needed bright spot in Istari's life—until Istari meets his family and learns of a dangerous family secret with unexpected ties to Istari's past, a secret that could drag Tallideth and Belemere right back into war...

The Painted Crown is book #2 in the Unbreakable Soldiers series. I would not call this a standalone. You need back story, though the history and plot are laid out well enough that following along isn't a hardship.

Prince Istari is between a rock and a hard place--a prisoner of peace, he is kept safe, though hardly free. His father is responsible for a horrific crime, one that shadows Istari's experience, leaving him isolated, emotionally and mentally. The secondary characters that orbit the prince are another classic trademark of Derr's work--they are real, vibrant, and enjoyable, even when acting like jerks.

Teverem is a treat. Nuanced and with depth, Teverem brings some weighty history to the relationship, as he assumed his title when his brother was killed in the same explosion for which Istari's father is responsible. Usually an insurmountable roadblock in any other story, it is merely one thing in a line of issues that the author sets up for the characters to navigate.

Derr has an amazing capacity for creating new worlds. Her creation skills in regards to setting, environment, and how those two things influence and impact characters and plot is on a level I can only call instinctual talent. Instinct further molded by skill that ensnares the reader and leaves them captivated until The End.

This book is emotional, the characters sympathetic and endearing, and the plot is intelligent and engrossing. Another favorite series and book.

I enjoyed this in much the same way as the first one. Good characters, good plot, a little too much combing over past hurts yet again. Could have used one more line-edit pass. However I really appreciated that there were no magical redemption arcs for bad guys. That fits my real-world awareness.

Content Warning: there are deliberate murders; the MC is a sniper and there are many terrible people doing terrible things.

This is another exciting, action-packed book in the Unbreakable Soldiers series. In this book, Prince Istari begins where Bk 1 ended, a skilled sharpshooter in the just-finished war and a hostage of Tallideth. Although knowing nothing of it, he must be there for six years to pay for the horrible, murderous actions of his father, the King of Belemere. Now deposed, his much fairer brother in on the throne.

While at Tallideth, Istari is ostracized and filled with unfounded guilt. He has met only one kind person, Lord Teverem, whose brother and SIL were killed in the previous book by actions of Belemere. Teverem has taken over parenting his deceased brother's three children.

When circumstances and the safety of the children deem it necessary that the two men marry and retreat to the relative safety of Belemere, they agree. Still, both tend to be graysexual and cannot fathom a romantic relationship unless they feel close to their partner, although both feel the beginnings of something more. Also, Istari wonders if Teverem will want to return to Tallideth once the danger has passed.

Danger follows the family, deception and betrayal abound, yet the feelings between Istari and Teverem deepen. Can they survive long enough to have a future together that they both seem to want? This book is a real page-turner that keeps the reader enthralled. I look forward to the next book in the series.

This is a great addition to the series. I love the worlds this author creates and the tales spun around these worlds.
As with the previous book this world is perilous to everyone and each turn sees another problem. Told entirely from Istari's POV we get to understand his childhood and how that shaped the man he is today, never believing the good anyone sees in him. I enjoyed his interactions with his team, which showed the light hearted teasing.
The relationship between Istari and Teverem was done well.
Looking forward to the next book

Another winner in this series with a ton of action, hurt/comfort themes, and a ton of kids and adventuring. Can’t wait for more.

This is such a good story and I couldn't help but laugh...and cry as I read it. There were a majority of the characters from The Engineered Throne in it was an equally impressive assortment of new characters.

I don't think I have read anything by Megan Derr that I didn't love and this was no exception.

I have really enjoyed the story of the Prince of paradoxes, abandoned but so loving, crippled but deadly capable, ruthless but with the soul of an artist. A fascinating adventure full of evil, oh so evil twists, and candid moments that will make you even more smitten with the characters. Watch the way his teasing friends talk to Prince Ish-tar the Twice-Cursed, because it shows so much! Great great story.

Read the first book of this series and loved it. The second just reinforces my love and interest for this we'll crafted world and endearing characters.
I hope there will be more of this world yet to discover.
Very well written and developed. A few typos, only enough yo count on one hand, and not enough to deter the smooth read.

Brilliant characters ,as always with this author. A story that leaves the reader exhausted yet exhilarated. Action, drama, wronged children ,action , evil kings ,loyal brothers, die-for-honour brothers-in-arms, betrayal and through it all - yes more action and true love in an adult length book. Happily no short story although greedily one wants more. Sooooo nice!

Lengthy but better than average plot. Exiled Renaissance-man mc comes good. Complete with cute kids, sharp shooting, and political intrigue.
