We know it can be a little scary trying something new (especially when it's bright green), but we have a feeling you're going to be pleasantly surprised. Our green smoothies taste good, pinkie promise!
WHEN SOMETHING'S JUST GOTTA GIVE . . .
We are all creatures of habit, even when they're the bad ones. But we also have incredible intuition and can sense when things just aren't right with our bodies. We get concerned when our faces start breaking out; we look pregnant when we're not; our arms have a li'l jiggle; we struggle to get out of bed in the morning; we crave the foods that we know make us feel sluggish . . . the list goes on and on.
This is usually when we decide it's time to buck up and go on a diet. We get hopeful that this diet will fix everything, but it's not something we can keep up with for the long term.
As two busy moms doing our best to raise healthy families, keep up our energy levels, and look and feel good ourselves, we were no different. We tried just about everything. Between us, we've embarked upon a dozen different diets in hopes of finding a way to feel amazing in our bodies.
Eventually, we would always give in to the drive-thru cravings or decide that after weeks of consuming nothing but liquids, it was time to actually chew something--and that "something" would be an entire pepperoni pizza. Nothing had lasting results, and we'd find ourselves right back where we started: searching for "the perfect diet."
But the truth is that the majority of diets don't work. Are you wondering, "What the heck is in a green smoothie?" Well, you're not alone. People always stop and ask us what the green stuff is that we're drinking. We love the crazy stares! Every green smoothie we blend is based on the following simple formula:
LEAFY GREENS + FRUIT + LIQUID = GREEN SMOOTHIE
We embrace the plant-powered goodness all the way! There are a few ingredients you won't find in our green smoothies that you often find in others: dairy, animal-based products, processed sugars, and gluten. We are very intentional about avoiding these ingredients because we know many people are highly sensitive to them and they can trigger allergies and upset tummies. You may not even know you have a sensitivity to any of these foods until you remove them from your diet. Now, are you ready for some leafy love going straight into your body to renew you from the inside out? Oh, kale yeah!
Let Go of Perfection and Embrace the Good
The green smoothie journey changed our lives. It opened the door to nut milks, natural sweeteners, kale chips, buckwheat pillows, organic produce, hot yoga, farm-to-table restaurants, homemade deodorant, backyard chickens, raised garden beds, and grass-fed butter.
We're sure you can tell that we lo-o-ove our leafy greens. But would you believe we also enjoy greasy pizza, extra creamy mac 'n' cheese, hot fudge sundaes, and black licorice? Yep, you read that right. We gulp green smoothies and eat greasy pizza.
The difference is, these things used to control us and be in our bodies all day long. We craved these foods and didn't feel satiated until our mouths were stuffed and our bellies were bloated. But that's not the case anymore.
When we have a green smoothie for breakfast, we're just not as tempted to reach for that doughnut later on. So, yes, we still enjoy unhealthy things, but we now choose when we feel like indulging. It's like the chains of the processed food world have been broken, and we can say yes or no to junk food without an internal struggle.
A big part of the green smoothie lifestyle is accepting our imperfections, listening to our cravings, celebrating any win (big or small), and sticking with our daily green smoothie habit. Our hope is that you experience this same food freedom we have found by drinking a daily green smoothie.
Why We Don't Count Calories
When we focus on counting calories or tracking points, we forget what truly matters--vitamins and nutrients. The simple truth is that calories are not equal. For example, you can gulp down a 100-calorie soda or a 100-calorie green smoothie. Sure, they have the same number of calories, but the differences in their health benefits are drastic.
The soda fills your body with sodium and processed sugar that spike your blood sugar levels and cause you to crave more of it. This is why we focus on nutrients, not calories.

I love things that are simplified. This book does it all and not only has easy, delicious recipes, it gives great tips for beginners on everything from blenders to washing produce. But don't get me wrong: this book is great for the "experts" among us too.
The organization of the book is very handy: I would consider it "functional" as in if you feel sick you'd go to the "Healing and Immunity Boosting" chapter; if you feel bloated or are focused on weight loss, you head to the "Lean and Green section", if you are heavy gym rat or runner, head to the "Fitness Fuel" chapter, and so on and so forth. I personally love the "Natural Beauty" chapter. I also love the index at the back of the book, so that makes it easy to find what you're looking for too.
The little "tip" boxes are fun and add value to what is already useful information. The recipes are straightforward, use normal, easily accessible ingredients, and are easy to substitute other ingredients with if needed ( they have a guide for substitutions, recommended veggie-to-fruit rations, and similar info in the front section of the book). There are even a couple of "dessert" and savory recipes in here too. As an added bonus, the photos are gorgeous, and make actually reading the book a joy.
The only thing I wish they added were calorie counts for each recipe. Obviously you can just throw each ingredient into a calorie counter app, and "save" the smoothies as individual meal, but it would be nice to just have that info in the book for those of us needing that level of specificity. Of course, the calories you're getting from the smoothie are guaranteed to be "good" (wholesome) calories, so it may not matter for most folks.
Jen and Jadah make incorporating green smoothies into your life fun and effortless. I am getting ready for my wedding later in the year, and have started making smoothies for breakfast. I just pick two recipes for the coming week, put the ingredients on my weekend shopping list and, throw it in the blender in the mornings. Plus, the recipes make two servings, so if you're "cooking for one" like I am, each time you make a recipe, you have breakfast for two days made in advance.
No matter if you're a green smoothie novice or die-hard fan, there's something in here for everyone. It's a "must-have" on your shelf, and dare I say, on your kitchen counter for years to come!

I have a standby smoothie thanks to these ladies from the very beginning - my fave is frozen banana, handful of spinach, handful of blueberries, frozen strawberries and mango and/or pineapple, coconut water, squeeze half a lemon, protein powder and flax seed. If I have green apples - I'll always add to whatever smoothie I'm having because I like the benefits and the flavor.
I have tried spinach and kale but I am curious about Dandelion greens and turnip greens. Page 32 has a graph showing the different flavors of greens in categories like Subtle, Earthy, Peppery, Bitter and Herbaceous. Very informative - good info to know.
I freeze the kale in cubes after watering down with coconut water. I use cupcake tins so I know right away the round ones are kale. I usually freeze the spinach whole in Ziploc freezer bags if I don't think I'll be able to get to it all before it can go bad.
The book offers lots of recipes - I am going to try the homemade coconut milk and the homemade vanilla recipes because I like knowing what is in my drinks.
I like hot drinks and had never considered making a hot drink with spinach so I am curious about the Mexican Hot Chocolate recipe on page 222. With spinach? Get out! I'm ok with spinach in my cold smoothie but hot chocolate? Hmmm........ I will post a follow up on my review here after I try it.
Jim and I are of a mindset that we don't buy new until our old stops working. As long as it works and does what we need - we are satisfied. But, boy would I love to try a Vitamix blender based on what I've heard about them.
This is not a crash diet of any sort - you drink the smoothie daily along with following a balanced diet - what I do notice - is I have more energy and I eat less because this smoothie fills me up. I look forward to trying many of these recipes and I really enjoy the photos of the families spending time together and being silly.
I recommend this book and look forward to more from these gals. I have a feeling this book is going to have a lot of kitchen stains on it. It will be used with anticipation and love.

Here is why this book has opened new doors for me. I do not like many vegetables raw or cooked, especially the green variety. For some time I have been wanting to go to smoothies because (I hoped) I could disguise certain flavors and textures in the smoothie, in the same manner that I do with fruit smoothies. I have tried a very few recipies that I have found in the past and many of then we're just too "hard core" in their raw vegetable taste for my liking. Desperate in my want to make some changes in my eating, I started searching for books on Amazon. After considerable reading of reviews, I settled on this book because it seemed as though it had all that I need to get started. The price is very reasonable and the reviews are very good. My attitude was very simply this, if I could find even two recipies that appealed to me enough to stick with them, the book would have paid for itself.
So the book arrives, I spend 5 minutes with it and I know immediately that I have made the right decision. I don't know if I could have spent my money any better.
The book is FULL of information. It discusses the different applications intended for various smoothies. It talks about areas of concern when eating certain foods and how to rotate and moderate certain intake. There are plenty of other ingredients such as powders, seeds and nuts listed to help augment the nutritional value of any given smoothie, if you what to go that route.There are WAAAY more than just two recipies that appeal to me (so happy). Some are strictly vegetable, some incorporate fruit. Many recipies suggest alternate ingredients if you have issues with some of the ones listed. There are conversion tables for measuring ingredients. Tons of photos, which is always part of the appeal process when it comes to eating.
Everything is very simply laid out and explained. For a beginner like me, this book could been seen as a "bible" of sorts but I truly believe there is plenty in this book for those that have been "going green" for awhile now.
I believe this book is of value to anyone who wants to get away from the sugar laden, carb and fatty foods that are so readily available and get back to proper nutrional intake without it feelings like a sacrifice or some kind of punishment.
I am so happy that I have found this book. I have tried 3 different smoothies so far and I loved all 3. I am on my way and I believe you could be too!
There are so many valuable tipps and tricks in this book it is really worth getting.
I am havin a smoothie now every day instead of lunch and it is just great!
Before i was just throwing everything in the blender and then just gulping instead of tasting since the contend usually tasted strange.
Now the smoothies are actually smooth, drinkable and nutritious.
