About the Author

Ben Stein (Los Angeles, CA) is a respected economist who is known to many as a movie and television personality, but has worked more in personal and corporate finance than anywhere else. He has written about finance for Barron's, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and Fortune; was one of the chief busters of the junk-bond frauds of the 1980s; has been a longtime critic of corporate executives' self-dealing; and has cowritten eight finance books. Stein travels the country speaking about finance in both serious and humorous ways, and is a regular contributor to CBS's Sunday Morning, CNN, and Fox News. He was the 2009 winner of the Malcolm Forbes Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism.

More a pamphlet than a book

Save your money. Here’s the Readers Digest version: if you’re young, save and buy stock; if you’re over 50, you’re screwed.
Stein says all this in about 40 pages, cleverly turned to 120 by extra wide spacing and lots of empty pages. It takes less time to read than to watch one of his tv spots, and there’s nothing here you haven’t heard before.
At one point, he advises not to make unnecessary purchases just to make yourself feel good. I will remember that in the future.

Recommended for the Young

It is an excellent book however, I would recommended it to the young and not to those of us that are already retired on a fixed income. Basically the book recommends investing in the stock market and specifically in Index Funds. One needs years of holding onto the Index funds, several thousands of dollars to invest and be prepared for fees. If the young can come up with a minimum of $3000 to start investing in an Index Fund then this is a great book to help them get thinking in this direction.

He hit a home run with this book. The biggest surprise for me about this book is it's simple easy reading. Nothing fancy or hard to understand (I am a long time investor). This book should be on every parents list as a gift for a graduating student (High School or College). I wish this book had been written 40 years ago. Every young person should read this book.

Ben Stein teaches basic economics better than any college professor you ever had. Readable, understandable, a good source of economic intelligence for those of us who slept through school. To those people telling you that money is not really that important, this book refutes that idea. Money feeds our families, put a roof over our heads, pays the doctors and preachers, and generally makes us way more comfortable than poverty. Ben Stein shows you the way.

Good Basic Book for Newbies

This is a very basic book which I received free from a financial newsletter I subscribe to. That being said, I ordered more copies from Amazon to give as gifts to my children who are all in their 20s and just starting to get a grip on the financial world and how things really work. Why don't they teach this stuff in school? Remains to be seen if they will actually read it or put any of it to use! We'll see....

I loved this book.

Use Ben Stein's book as your investing guide and you will do well. You can start with Ben Stein's advice and then gradually "expand" when you get more experience. Consider using FolioFN as your basis. Stein and Buffett say to use indexes. Well, at Folio they have MANY indexes available and they are cheap. Very low fees. So start with Ben Stein's book.

I felt like the book was light on content but the recommendations were worthwhile. The last recommendation on page 122 gives no suggestions on how to accomplish; “Let your corporate income compound without tax inside the corporation, then pay the capital gains rate on it when you sell.” Can someone explain how to do this?
