- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseGreat book I gave to my great nephew. Luckily, Rudy is not slaughtered for food and instead he is rescued & lives the rest of his life at a sanctuary where he is loved & free from torture & abuse.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2020Format: HardcoverRudy: Pigs don’t want to be Bacon is a succinct statement that applies to all beings: don’t kill me to eat me; my life is precious and meaningful to me.
Unlike her other two children’s books, “Louise’s Secret” and “Angie’s Rescue: Pigs Can Fly”, Rudy leaves nothing to the imagination, no guessing.
Little Rudy takes you on a journey from his birth in a gestation crate to his escape from the slaughterhouse truck and beyond. On the way he shares many interesting facts about pigs and refutes untruths about them. Your child will learn compassion and science without a side of bacon!
As in all of the author’s other 3 books, Jeremy Hudson once again provides his thoroughly expressive, heartfelt illustrations that capture what the author says in words: We Animals Have Feelings. Respect them! Don’t Eat Me!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2017Format: HardcoverI was forwarded this book by the author to review. As I am not vegan I reached out to a parent this morning to just asked general questions about being vegan with a child. She brought up things I would have never thought about and I think this book is very important to get into a family's hands to help a parent explain to a child why their family does not eat bacon, hot dogs, pork chops, etc. This goes way beyond the point of vegan. It teaches so much about pigs and how smart they are and why we believe the myths about them that we do. Even this seasoned reviewer learned a lot! A little about the book. Rudy is a happy little pig living with his mother, siblings, and best friend. He is shortly sent off to a "fattening" farm and of course making Rudy very sad. Rudy takes this as a chance to tell why pigs are great and how being made for pork products can break a piggy's heart and honestly this reviewer's too.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2016Format: HardcoverThis children's book was written in direct response to a book entitled "I Want To Be Bacon When I Grow Up" and sends a powerful message teaching that animals are not much different than you and I and maybe we should think about and reconsider what we are actually eating. Barbara Thumann- Calderaro is a talented responsible writer and animal activist who writes with clarity and accuracy regarding the factual information presented about pigs, which I presume very few people are aware of. The circumstances Rudy and Carole face are challenging and the story shows how these pigs work through their confusion, fears and insecurities while at the same time providing a touching story with a happy ending. The book is enhanced with creative illustrations demonstrating the author's message and ensuring the story can easily be followed by young readers. Dr.Steven D

I loved it! It was well written and had creative drawings to make it come alive. As an 11 year old myself, I agree that all children should be known the truth. This book explains that pigs don't want to be bacon. It is absolutely perfect for children. Parents should let their children to make their own food choices.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2016Format: HardcoverI so appreciate that there is a book like this out for children, who will understand how pigs, like any other animal, want to be free and live a life free from harm and cruelty. The book carefully gives out details regarding the lives pigs lead when raised on a factory farm, and is not too graphic. I believe it would be appropriate for children of a certain age. The illustrations are appealing and colorful. There are already too many lies told to children in general, in order to acclimate them to the idea of eating meat, and dissociate them from a living feeling being. This book is important, and is written for them.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2016Format: HardcoverThe first half of this book has Rudy the Pig teaching kids in his own words a bunch of amazing facts about pigs, and trying to clear up some misconceptions society has for them. For the second half of the book, Rudy explains to kids how bacon is made from his own personal experience. This is a wonderful concept by the author introducing this sensitive topic to children, and one I haven't seen in any other vegan children's book. The wonderful illustrations throughout work nicely with the story. As a vegan teacher of 10 years and fellow children's book author, i'd definitely recommend it to your collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2016Format: HardcoverRudy is such a lovable little pig, and the author really makes a difficult topic understandable for little ones. I laughed, I cried, and was so relieved that there was a happy ending. This is a great way to introduce a meat-free way of life to a child. I'm sure when my nephews are a little older, they will have questions for me about why I don't eat what everyone else in the family eats, and this will be a wonderful tool in helping to explain that to them!
