Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is exactly what the world needs right now: a compassionate, frank, succinct, and beautifully empowering workbook for our traumatized teens. It's chock-full of critical information, helpful assessments, and organized checklists, alongside healing strategies and resiliency practices. This is the book I wish I'd had as a brand new therapist, and I'm incredibly grateful that it's available now. I'll be recommending this in every space I can." ―Kay Bruner, MA, LPC, author of As Soon As I Fell, Debunking the Myths of Forgive and Forget, and Comfort Ye My People

"An essential book for every teen who is beginning the personal journey to heal from trauma. This book provides a practical framework for exploring the nature and effects of trauma and the steps for moving forward in the healing journey. A valuable resource."
―Laura Steele, PsyD, dean of College of Psychology and Counseling at Hope International University

"This book comes to us in a time of high stress and emotions as we navigate a world of uncertainty. Such a needed gem for teens! Dr. Vinall hits the nail on the head with a workbook that is easy to read and follow both for teens and the adults who support them through their healing journey. This book breaks down trauma in a way that is easy to understand and helps the reader feel seen and validated. It is an amazing resource to help teens navigate through feelings and emotions and provides them with resources to identify and work through trauma."
―Marissa G. Soria, MSW, LCSW, founder of Metztli Counseling Services and author of Parenting Teen Boys: A Positive Approach to Raising Healthy, Independent Sons

"This book is not only an informative and evidence-based resource but also has exercises, tools, and strategies to help teens who have had complex and deep trauma. It is an all-in-one for the teens that helps to accelerate and ground clinical treatment of trauma with teens. I 100% recommend for any clinician working with teens who have experienced trauma."
―Tonya Nowakowski, LCSW, director of Victor Community Support Services, Los Angeles County

"Dr. Vinall combines her extensive expertise in our community's most sound trauma recovery therapies in this masterful, effective workbook that speaks to today's savvy adolescent.
Trauma Recovery Workbook for Teens identifies and demystifies the essentials of smart, evidenced-based, effective trauma recovery and resiliency building in a developmentally informed, comprehensive workbook, at a time when youth are wanting to hear from credible and empowering mental health professionals." ―Suzanne Mata, PsyD, SUMA Trauma Center, clinical psychologist and trauma specialist

"Deborah Vinall explains in a smooth, safe way what trauma can do to adolescents. Unafraid to face the truth, her book opens ways of integration for teens. As we say in Brainspotting, 'Where you look affects how you feel,' and she encourages focus on the past in a way that facilitates release from it and guides toward constructing a resilient future! Her book is worth reading for any teenager to understand trauma reactions and to find out about possible ways of changing post-traumatic states. It is also highly valuable for all adults who are interested in this topic!"
―Dr. Monika Baumann, PhD, author of Brainspotting with Children and Adolescents

I wasn’t ready! I started working through this to see whether I’d want my teens to go through it and after reading the first few pages, I had to stop and process the emotions that filled me. I think we often ignore that many of us have teenage trauma we’ve packed away. Teens today have so much more support than we ever had. If your teen hasn’t taken the steps to talk to a professional, this book will really help. It will help now to organize thoughts and feelings that seem disorganized. It will help later when you forget what was bothering you once you are with a therapist. Still working through this.I want to say that the workbook aspect is amazing. I’m currently in a learning community (equity and diversity) and the book we are reading doesn’t have this format so our leads create it informally using shared documents. I’ve found our “workbook” discussions help so much more than just reading. The reading is great but nothing beats writing down your thoughts. Having done these workbooks created by a professional in the field and having done workbook style with just peers, there’s a quality difference. All in all, there’s so much written in this book that resonates with me. Thank you for allowing me to review an advanced copy, we all needed this.

Very impressed and happy to be working with my teenager on this book. Great information and exercises, we both have PTSD and are learning together things I never knew and that are so valuable for healing. I definitely think it's a great purchase and valuable tool.

My daughter, 15, victim of horrific atrocity, is learning that her thoughts and feelings are normal for a person who has been through the R word. Guilt, shame, hiding things.. lying.. drugs.. horrible choices, zero confidence, etc. they develop their entire lifelong personality based on all this terrible stuff. This book has for real validated her feelings and taught her a million amazing things. Combined with learning all of the amazing skills from the process of teaching self government (look it up, it's the best thing any parent can EVER do to permanently change the heart (and life) of their child - and of the parent) she is getting her actual power back. I highly recommend the Trauma Recovery Workbook for Teens!!! Thank you for helping us parents use CBT & DBT therapy at home, instead of having to outsource to expensive doctors. For millennia, parents were the ones getting their children raised right. Now, we outsource everything, teaching them we can't help them. That we need to get others to help them. Ugh. Never again. This is my show now! And my daughter and me have never been closer and had more respect for each other or so much fun and smiling and laughing and amazing discussions. Don't forget what i said about self government.

I can’t wait to receive this book after seeing all the great reviews. I have a 15 year old daughter who has been in and out of counseling since she was 8 years old. She currently goes to counseling, but this will hopefully help her stay on track when she is in between appointments.

This book is an excellent tool for teens--and adults--who have experienced trauma in their lives. One can use it in conjunction with therapy (recommended), or work through it on their own. I am glad to see an effective resource that can be used independently of therapy for the many who may not be able to see a therapist for various reasons. "Trauma Recovery Workbook For Teens" would also be an excellent resource for school counselors and therapists. The author writes in a voice that is affirming and supportive, encouraging and challenging the reader on their unique journey toward healing, equiping them with tools and helping them develop effective coping skills along the way. Informative and filled with easy to follow instructions, activities (meditation, breathing exercises, journaling), and ways to keep track of your experiences, this book will be helpful for anyone working through their personal trauma history. Don't let the age category on the cover give you pause; young adults and older will also find gentle support on their journey to healing.

I believe the workbook will be useful. Content vextremely spot on and well written. I agree with the 5 star reviews so comprehensively written and am holding high hopes that my recipient of said workbook will read and engage with it. I only downgraded it to a 4 bc the book itself should've been sold as "used". To return for another wasn't an option for me bc I am housebound due to injury/surgeries. It should've been shrink wrapped before stocking/shelving to avoid damages to cover/pages when handled and/or shipped, as in my case. I am pre-reading this before giving it to my intended recipient, and I am glued to it! I never realized all the factors affecting us in our lives, not just as teens! Great workbook...for pretty much any age! Check it out for yourself and / or gift one to someone who might benefit from it.
