I Will Show You How It Was: The Story of Wartime Kyiv Hardcover – May 7, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
"A story of searing clarity from Ukraine's frontlines of an unfathomably resilient, freedom loving people who refuse to bend to Putin's assault on truth and human life."-Nicole Perlroth
“Destined to become a classic of modern war reporting.”-Luke Harding
A raw, irreverent account of a young Ukrainian reporter on-the-ground as his country heroically defends itself against the Russian invasion.
In late February 2022, a series of missiles and rocket strikes began falling upon Ukraine, as the Russian military barreled over the border and fanned out across the country. First they took Chernobyl, then Kherson, then Mariupol. Time stood still as the world waited for Ukraine to flatten underneath the boot of its neighbor.
Meanwhile, on the front lines in the capital city, Kyiv Independent reporter Illia Ponomarenko was seeing a different story on unfold: after months-years-of waiting for this long-feared attack, Ukraine was fed up and ready to fight back. The Russians bogged down hard in combat east and west of Kyiv. They got exhausted. They screwed up logistics. They sustained heavy losses. Their unbelievably overconfident blitz was failing.
I Will Show You How It Was is Illia Ponomarenko's heart-wrenching memoir of the war on his homeland, offering a fiery diatribe against Russian hypocrisy and a moving look at what is being lost. But it's also a story of pride and even elation as Ukrainian forces come together, find their mojo, and oust the invaders from Kyiv. The most powerful and personal chronicle of the war to date, I Will Show You How It Was is an exceptional literary achievement, chronicling a stunning feat of resistance and a courageous people set on a miraculous victory.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“A clear-eyed account of Ukraine under siege . . . a gripping account of Ukrainians' struggle, offering moral clarity about the causes of the war.” ―The Economist
“Candid and arresting.” ―NPR
“Searing . . . a clear and resounding call for Westerners to revisit the fight and remember their initial enthusiasm for solidarity . . . Though Kyiv has not been taken and the beauty of springtime has once again come to the city, the war is still not over, and it is something that Ponomarenko has not forgotten. He hopes that we, also, will not forget.” ―Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
“A kind of love letter to journalism, to Ukraine and, above all, to Kyiv as it drives the enemy from the gates . . . a heartfelt addition to the plethora of books on the war.” ―The Irish Times
“Ponomarenko's meticulous and painful description of the period stirred up gut-wrenching emotions from the time and will quickly take any reader back to those harrowing days.” ―The Cipher Brief
“A raw, candid account from a young Ukrainian reporter covering his country's defiant stand against the Russian invasion.” ―European Policy Centre
“[Ponomarenko] focuses here on Kyiv, its people, and how resourceful Ukrainians turned back the seemingly irresistible advance on the capital in spring 2022. He captures well the disbelief and trauma felt when Russia commenced its unnecessary war, which transformed into a steely resistance. . . The immediacy of Ponomarenko's account indeed shows how it really was.” ―Choice
“Remarkable . . . [I Will Show You How It Was] lives up to its title, with countless pages that are alternately heart-rending, stomach-churning, and even inspiring. This is an important story, and Ponomarenko tells it with passion and intelligence. A revelatory portrait of the horror and absurdity of the conflict spiked with much-needed threads of humanity and hope.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“In this masterful blend of memoir and reportage, Ukrainian journalist Ponomarenko covers the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine with rigor and surprising wit. Determined to combat the 'shameless lies' that Vladimir Putin used to justify Russia's assault on Kyiv, Ponomarenko shares his on-the-ground observations of Ukrainian resistance … Such balanced takes and sardonic humor enliven the proceedings throughout. The results are lucid, stirring, and hard to shake.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Brings to life in vivid detail what it was like on the ground before, during, and after the Russian onslaught on the capital city . . . [makes] the reader feel the fear, uncertainty, and danger that the fog of war forces regular people to endure. Ponomarenko stands defiant.” ―Booklist
“Both memoir and action film, detailed journalism and personal reflection . . .Taking us to the streets of his beautiful city, [Ponomarenko] reminds us that this fight is primarily for something. It is an embrace of the good, a defense of home, an affirmation of life in the midst of death.” ―Current
“A personal Ukrainian perspective on the realities of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, vital for understanding the nature of this war of aggression and the motivation of Ukrainians.” ―Australian Institute of International Affairs
“A story of searing clarity from Ukraine's frontlines of an unfathomably resilient, freedom loving people who refuse to bend to Putin's assault on truth and human life. We in the West must take note. Ukrainians are doing our work for us and we own them immeasurable gratitude. Never has this been clearer than in Illia Ponomarenko's heartbreaking-and ultimately hopeful-prose.” ―Nicole Perlroth, bestselling author of THIS IS HOW THEY TELL ME THE WORLD ENDS
“A delightful, moving, painful, compulsively readable narrative of the early months of the Russian invasion. A gifted storyteller, Illia Ponomarenko talks to you as if you are sitting side-by-side, looking out the window of an apartment building in his beloved Kyiv, drinking cheap vodka shots and watching the sunrise after a long night of remembering-the heroism, the fear, the history, the love- the glories gained and the lives lost. This is, very possibly, the Ukraine war's very own Dispatches. Brilliant.” ―Jon Lee Anderson, bestselling author of CHE GUEVARA: A REVOLUTIONARY LIFE
“Brilliant, dark and devastating. Illia Ponomarenko's memoir of the battle for Kyiv following Russia's 2022 invasion is destined to become a classic of modern war reporting. I Will Show You How It Was describes the folly and arrogance of Vladimir Putin's military plan, the thump and boom of battle, and the heroic fightback against the odds by Ukrainian soldiers and ordinary civilians. A vivid, dramatic, and moving account.” ―Luke Harding, author of INVASION: RUSSIA'S BLOODY WAR AND UKRAINE'S FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL & the #No 1 New York Times bestseller COLLUSION
“Kyiv was doomed, destined to fall within a few short weeks if not days--those were the expectations of many, both friends and foes of Ukraine in February of 2022. The Ukrainian people surprised the world by fighting back, saving their capital, and turning the tide of the war. This eyewitness account of the battle for Kyiv explains not only how it happened but also why the Ukrainians fought and keep fighting today, once again against all the odds.” ―Serhii Plokhy, author of THE RUSSO-UKRAINIAN WAR and director of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute
“A roaring, scathing expose of Russia's 'case' for war; a wry, vivid, deeply personal account of the invasion; a moving portrait of young Ukrainians' bewilderment and rage.” ―Andrew Harding, BBC correspondent and author of A SMALL, STUBBORN TOWN
“At the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the world thought that Ukraine would not be able to withstand the military power of Russia. But people decided to fight for their freedom. Nothing is predestined. It is the decisiveness to act that determines the society that has a future. And this is what this book is about.” ―Oleksandra Matviychuk, Noble Peace Prize winner

Many times you felt like you were walking the street s of this beautiful city with the author. I got chocked up at times reading about the destruction and unnecessary death draught by Russia.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIt is no exaggeration to say that Illia Ponomarenko has written one of the most compelling books about war. The prose is not only engaging but also manages to captivate despite the brutality of the content. I believe Illia has created a new genre of literature. Combining the depth of Svetlana Alexievich with the gripping narrative of Stieg Larsson, Illia has produced something entirely unique. The heart-wrenching reality of a senseless war of aggression by a terrorist state is intertwined with a realistic and engaging portrayal of the real characters in the story.
This is absolutely one of the best books I have ever read.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe writer presents a survey of the months before the 24 February, 2022 invasion. He then joins the military and people of Kiev for the uncertain time of defending of the capital, the month and weeks of fighting to drive the Russians back. With Kiev secured, he tours the nation. Many, many sketches of the brave Ukrainian people. How It Was offers a textbook of that first year when Ukraine showed the world the people of a free nation could confront an evil empire of rape, torture, mass murder, and destruction.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIllia Ponomarenko’s, I Will Show You How It Was, is a poignant, personal, heart-breaking, at times funny (Illia’s first meeting of his girlfriend’s parents; his escapades with his roommate, Ivan), yet hopeful account of the early months before and through the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the assault on Ukraine’s beautiful capital city, Kyiv. Illia’s writing was so personal. I felt as though I was sitting with him in a coffee shop or bar, as he described what it was like to be living in Kyiv in those dark days—first, the feeling of disbelief that Russia would stage such an invasion, then the slow realization that something terrible was about to happen, then the horror of the massive attempted invasion. Told from the perspective of this young war-correspondent, the writing gave me great hope that no matter what, Ukraine will prevail over Russia. This will happen because young, ordinary Ukrainians like Illia (who I would actually say is an extraordinary young man) have tasted freedom. They want a future free of Russian influence. Illia’s message gave me hope that Putin and his Russia will never successfully impose their will on the nearly forty million Ukrainians who are fighting for a different future for their country.
This book should be read by all Americans—to shake us from our complacency that our freedom is forever insured. I highly recommend I Will Show You How It Was.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2024Format: HardcoverI Will Show You How It Was: The Story of Wartime Kyiv by Illia Ponomarenko is a personal account of the events leading up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the early weeks of the war. Mr. Ponomarenko is a journalist working for The Kyiv Independent. His writing style is informal and accessible which adds to the authenticity of his descriptions. Throughout the memoir, excerpts from key political speeches and other sources are cited. This brings an important element of credibility to Mr. Ponomarenko's accounts of the circumstances. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is eager to gain a firsthand perspective of the war in Ukraine. In addition to being a useful and readable account of the war for those wanting to learn more about the present situation, this book will be a very valuable source of primary literature to those studying this war in the future. My only feedback is that book is written for someone who has a basic understanding of Ukrainian geography and history. This book may be difficult to follow by individuals with no background of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In 2024, anyone who is following the news will have that required background.

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI read Illia’s articles in Kyiv Independent and I was looking forward to read the book . It took a little bit long for delivery but I think interest was high by many readers . Great stuff! It is a personal recording before and during the assault against Kyiv, very interesting . Very well written and detailed . Highly raccomended . The books ends in May 2022 , maybe there will be a sequel . We have to continue to support Illia, Kyiv Independent and all Ukrainians to live in freedom and without war . I don’t know how long it will take but I have no doubt slavery and imperial dreams will end in the dustbin of history!
