- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2023I'm on a Jewish genealogy email list, and Kevin posts there frequently, with an impressive depth and breadth of knowledge about maternal lines. I wanted to know more, so I ordered this book. Although Jewish male lines have been studied extensively, genealogists haven't paid as much attention to the maternal line. This book helps remedy that oversight, and it also includes information on yDNA.
This book has four chapters: an introduction to Ashkenazic history and genetics, an encyclopedia listing the Ashkenazi maternal lines (this is most of the book), a chapter about related non-Ashkenazi haplogroups, and a conclusion discussing various theories of migration patterns associated with various haplogroups.
I'm a K1a4a, relatively rare, and my 100*great-grandmother probably lived in Italy or Greece. Pretty cool, just to contemplate all the women who preceded me, their mothers and their daughters, an unbroken line going way back.
This is not an intro to genetic genealogy, but for anyone interested in the topic, it's a fascinating resource and addition to the genealogy reference library.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2023This is a fantastic, well researched resource for anyone wanting to understand Ashkenazi genetics.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024Contrary to what Frodoman says, a 1-star review on this book, most Jews are Middle Eastern, not Khazar. Brook knows that and that's why he writes that in his book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2022Following the mind of Brooks is a true roller coster ride. In 2006, the author advocated that Ashkenazi Jews (AJs) came from the Khazars. Now? They come from Israel? Based on that? Ancient DNA data do not suport that. AJs do not share ANY haplogroups with the ancient Israelites from Israel, but that doesn't bother the author. It also don't bother him that AJ's haplogroup are shared with Eastern Europeans and Turkish people, because to HIM they are not Khazars (who do not exist yet in the ancient DNA data). So, for Brooks, the absence of evidence to share haplogroups with the Khazar MUST mean that AJs are from Israel, and that's what this crazy ride is about.
This is a very poor scholarly work. I cannot wait for the next time the author decided to change his mind to capture more market segments.
