Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller

Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Bob Woodward delivers an eye-opening, behind-the-scenes narrative exploring the intricate dynamics of Ukraine, the Middle East, and the American presidency, offering unparalleled insights into political intrigue and global strategy from one of the most authoritative voices in political journalism today.

War is a “harrowing, riveting” (The New York Times) account of one of the most tumultuous periods in presidential politics in American history.

We see President Joe Biden and his top advisers in tense conversations with Russian president Vladimir Putin, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. We also see Donald Trump conducting a shadow presidency and seeking to regain political power ahead of the 2024 elections.

With unrivaled, inside-the-room reporting, Woodward shows President Biden’s approach to managing the war in Ukraine, the most significant land war in Europe since World War II, and his tortured path to contain the bloody Middle East conflict between Israel and the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

Woodward reveals the extraordinary complexity and consequence of wartime back-channel diplomacy and decision-making to deter the use of nuclear weapons and a rapid slide into World War III.

The raw cage-fight of politics accelerates leading up to the presidential election in 2024, starting between President Biden and Trump, and ending with the unexpected elevation of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president.

War provides an unvarnished examination of the vice president as she tries to embrace the Biden legacy and policies while beginning to chart a path of her own as a presidential candidate.

Woodward’s reporting once again sets the standard for journalism at its most authoritative and illuminating.

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF 2024 BY ASSOCIATED PRESS, NEWSWEEK, NPR, AND PROGRESSIVE.ORG

"Bob Woodward books have been an election tradition for decades. “War,” the latest of his highly sourced Washington insider accounts, made news with its allegations that Donald Trump had been in frequent contact with Russian leader Vladimir Putin..."—
Associated Press

"Legendary journalist Woodward compares the Biden and first Trump administrations with behind-the-scenes revelations. A critical read to understand the context of the past four to eight years of American politics,
War delves into the psychology of two presidents who held the same office but starkly different views on government and what America is and should be, both at home and abroad."—Peter Aitken, Newsweek

"There is a certain wistful quality about reading the latest bestseller that Bob Woodward has written about a U.S. president and national security....[It] also includes a report on Woodward’s 1989 interview with Trump, conducted along with colleague Carl Bernstein from the Watergate era.... It reveals a Trump who, at 42, sounds remarkably like the Trump of today."—
Ron Elving, NPR

"
War by Bob Woodward is full of previously unreported tidbits showcasing the depths of Donald Trump’s derelictions. Most of all, it is a harrowing portrait of the scramble by the Biden Administration to stave off World War III. Read it and realize how fragile and complicated the task of promoting peace really is."—Ruth Conniff, Progressive.org

“The shocking, breaking news is the biggest Oct surprise of the 21st century”
Lawrence O'Donnell, MSNBC

“Explosive…juicy…so wow”
—Jake Tapper, CNN

"this should be 'stop everything' stuff"—
Nicolle Wallace, MSNBC

"fascinating book ... This is a great book no matter where you are on the political spectrum."—
Neil Cavuto, Fox News Channel

"This Time, Bob Woodward Gets It Right: The Watergate journalist has taken a lot of hits—including from me. In his new Biden chronicle, War, he’s at his best."—
Franklin Foer,The Atlantic

“This is harrowing, riveting stuff...Three weeks after
War is published on Oct. 15, voters will provide raw material for the sequel. Though he specializes in real-time suspense, Woodward doesn’t write cliffhangers. His impulse — his talent — is to impose an arc and a moral on the mess and sprawl of very recent history. This time around, his stated conclusions are unambiguous: 'Donald Trump is not only the wrong man for the presidency,' he writes, 'he is unfit to lead the country.' In contrast, 'Biden and his team will be largely studied in history as an example of steady and purposeful leadership.' Those judgments sound authoritative. They also sound wishful."—A.O. Scott,New York Times

"...the legendary reporter, who, at age 81, has more energy and puts in more shoe leather than reporters half his age."—
Peter Bergen, CNN.com

"[
War] sports all the familiar Woodwardian trademarks—the anonymously sourced accounts of Top Secret meetings, the profanity-laced dialogue (in quotation marks, as if heard by a fly on the wall), the portrait of high politics as a clash of colorful characters: a fun, often compelling first (at times, second) draft of history. Yet, compared with the previous volumes, this latest is in some ways more interesting (if a bit less sensational), and it offers a more (though far from completely) coherent narrative....Woodward uncovers intriguing new facts about the conflicts or, at times, adds color and dimension to stories that others have reported in mere bits and pieces."—Fred Kaplan, Slate

“...reducing the book to scoops trivializes Woodward’s ambitions for this sprawling, occasionally blinkered but timely book. If the nuggets were the meal, then the headlines would make the book itself redundant ... a reader who understands these perspectives can adjust for any slants the sources may seek to provide. And even if most of the sources Woodward spoke to for the book are residents or friends of Bidenworld, he is too good a writer and too experienced an observer to let the book’s lessons be dictated by his sources ...it is because it thrums with the urgency Woodward must feel of persuading the electorate not to make the same mistake — or a worse one — again."—
Paul Musgrave, Washington Post

"Bob Woodward’s new book War is a sober but alarming must-read"—
Lloyd Green, The Guardian

Bob Woodward is an associate editor of The Washington Post, where he has worked since 1971. He has shared in two Pulitzer Prizes, first in 1973 for the coverage of the Watergate scandal with Carl Bernstein, and second in 2003 as the lead reporter for coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

He has authored or coauthored 18 books, all of which have been national non-fiction bestsellers. Twelve of those have been #1 national bestsellers. He has written books on eight of the most recent presidents, from Nixon to Obama.

Bob Schieffer of CBS News has said, “Woodward has established himself as the best reporter of our time. He may be the best reporter of all time.”

In 2014, Robert Gates, former director of the CIA and Secretary of Defense, said that he wished he’d recruited Woodward into the CIA, saying of Woodward, “He has an extraordinary ability to get otherwise responsible adults to spill [their] guts to him...his ability to get people to talk about stuff they shouldn’t be talking about is just extraordinary and may be unique.”

Gene Roberts, the former managing editor of The New York Times, has called the Woodward-Bernstein Watergate coverage, “maybe the single greatest reporting effort of all time.” In listing the all-time 100 best non-fiction books, Time Magazine has called All the President’s Men, by Bernstein and Woodward, “Perhaps the most influential piece of journalism in history.”

In 2018 David Von Drehle wrote, “What [Theodore] White did for presidential campaigns, Post Associate Editor Bob Woodward has done for multiple West Wing administrations – in addition to the Supreme Court, the Pentagon, the CIA and the Federal Reserve.”

Woodward was born March 26, 1943 in Illinois. He graduated from Yale University in 1965 and served five years as a communications officer in the United States Navy before beginning his journalism career at the Montgomery County (Maryland) Sentinel, where he was a reporter for one year before joining the Post.

Bob Woodward’s War, despite the complex topics covered, is a surprisingly readable book. In a sense, this is one of the parameters I use in regard to a books overall quality. The books cover gives one a pretty good idea of what the pages contain.
By the time my review is posted, I would imagine there will be well over 3,000 ratings, and hundreds, if not thousands of reviews.

Therefore, to keep it brief. There are three main topics: Russia/Ukraine; Israel/Hamas; and Trump always lurking behind the scenes. US intelligence informed Zelensky of the coming Russian invasion, despite the assurances of Putin and the Russian diplomatic core that an invasion was not in the cards. Biden and Blinken pressed the Russians not to invade, despite the assurances, all the while warning Zelensky to be prepared. After the invasion, the book stressed the cooperation of the US and NATO allies in supporting Ukraine, dancing a fine line between party politics and not giving in to Putin.

Israel and Hamas was more of, Biden and US diplomats preaching caution to Netanyahu, more or less using the United States as an example after 9/11. World sympathy was in Israel’s corner, don’t blow it. At stake was also acceptance of and normalization of Israel as a nation by Saudi Arabia. But, there was no holding Israel back, as well as Israeli reluctance to allow emergency food and medical supplies for the Palestinian populace of Gaza who were bombed and shelled out of their homes, as the Israeli offensive expanded from north to south through Gaza.

In the background of the book, the presence of Donald Trump and his second coming, and what it might entail was lurking like a dark storm, including his possible influence on the outcomes of the two aforementioned conflicts and what may lay in store for the United States if he was re-elected. Woodward does not paint a positive picture of Trump at all, but does portray Trump as one who has quite a bit more political savvy than what he is given credit for. In conclusion, it’s a decent book, and if one is interested in reading it, I’d suggest doing so prior to Trump’s inauguration, both for background information on the conflicts, and for some insight on what Trump will do.
I recommend the well researched and informative Bob Woodward book, War.

"War" covers the period of Biden's presidency primarily from about six months before Putin's Russia invaded the Ukraine through Biden's Announcement in July of 2024 that he was no longer running for reelection. The war in the Ukraine and and the war that Hamas started October 7 with Israel are very important centerpieces in this narrative. It shows many of the interactions in managing these conflicts in which the USA is actively supporting Ukraine and Israel while not taking an active role in the combat.

While the narrative centers primarily on Joe Biden's presidency and his inner staff during this wartime period, Donald Trump also has some coverage in this book along with Kamala Harris to a lesser degree as a part of Biden's presidency. I was personally glad that Woodward covered both the capable administrator Joe Biden and the "Well meaning old man in decline". It would be dishonest not to present both.

There was a part of me that sometimes wanted to cry over the events described in the Ukraine and Israel (October 7 Hamas attack). I also had the terrible feeling that it was a preview of World War 3. The very best that can be said is that Biden was able to navigate the difficult role of supporting both the Ukraine and Israel without getting the US directly involved in the fighting. Honest people can agree or disagree on if the Biden administration had any impact on why these these situations started, But it seems clear that his administration did everything practical to both support the Ukraine and Israel in their conflicts while doing its best to prevent US soldiers being in armed conflict. Also Biden seemed to try his best to control collateral damage to the civilian population of Gaza. There is a deep irony that foreign policy is often the primary area the President is responsible for, while at the same time the US president has limited influence on other governments. Add to that the intense legal pressure on Biden's son Hunter and in a way its not surprising that Biden has aged before our eyes despite a long career in government.

Donald Trump gets some mention, part of it because he is a significant part of the US political landscape. Another part is the contrast between Biden's approach and Trump's approach. Obviously both are willful men, and both are self confident. Donald Trump tends to operate on "instinct" while Biden is a more conventional executive. The advantage of "instinct" is that it's prone to quick decision, the big disadvantage is that if "instinct" is wrong, it can make big mistakes.

This is the 3rd recent Woodward book I have read. It's obvious that Bob does his homework to the degree that you feel you are there during some of the hard decisions - You get details. Unlike some books and authors I found that Bob did a good job of conveying the story and information mostly without using obscure words and terms without explaining them. In other words, the book is readable.

If you are interested in current events, I can definitely recommend this book. I read it on the Kindle App from Amazon so I could get my copy immediately (and save a few dollars).

Woodward's book is extremely well written and authoritative. A major missing subject, however, is what went on behind the scenes as Biden wrestled with developing a humane immigration policy. We know Susan Rice and Jake Sullivan advised to take a more limited approach to easy up on Trump's immigration policies, but who were the advocates (names) for the policy allowing immigrants to be admitted to and stay in the U.S. if they stated a credible fear? This is true even though it was known at the time that there was a 3 year wait for an asylum hearing, and that there was a lack of manpower to properly vet those allowed to enter. Although there appears to be other factors outside of Mr. Biden's control that caused the unprecedented surge at the border, allowing immigrants to stay in the U.S. appears to be the most significant cause of the surge. While those advisors who advocated for that policy probably did so with the best intentions, that policy may very well be the issue that will result in Mr. Trump being reelected and having instituting massive round ups and deportations. Sound judgment was not used, and those advocating for a more humane policy under the known conditions at the time, may cause the least humane immigration policy this country has ever known. I feel sick that this issue may bring down Kamala Harris.

Ordered this book after the 2024 US election after reading Woodwards three previous books and thoroughly enjoyed it. War takes you behind the scenes of Joe Bidens presidency as he faces down the war in Ukraine, the Israel and Hamas conflict, as well as his preparation for a re-election campaign. Woodward also takes the time to take the reader to the world of Donald Trump as he prepares to make a political comeback. Flipping between the two made the book more enjoyable and interesting. When it comes to the 2024 election, there was immense detail regarding Biden and Trump's campaigns in the primaries, Trump's trial and felony convictions in May, the run up to and fallout from the debate between them in June, and Bidens exit and the rise of Kamala Harris in July. Highly recommended

I read “All the President’s Men” after watching the movie on TV as a teenager, but didn’t seriously get into any other Woodward books until the Trump presidency. This one, like his others “Fear”, “Rage” & “Peril”, is indispensable reading. The access Woodward gets and the narrative he builds are amazing. He just reports facts and quotes the views expressed by the people that he’s interviewed, but unsung heroes emerge from the shadows and even the characters that are known to us have much more intense light shone upon them. Here’s hoping that light is indeed the best disinfectant.
