However, survivors report a different experience: Telling and re-telling the story of what happened to them often reactivates their trauma responses, overwhelming them rather than resolving the trauma. To transform traumatic experiences, survivors need to understand their symptoms and reactions as normal responses to abnormal events. They need ways to work with the symptoms that intrude on their daily activities, preventing a life beyond trauma.
Dr. Janina Fisher, international expert on trauma, has spent over 40 years working with survivors, helping them to navigate their journey. In Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma, she shows how the legacy of symptoms helped them survive and offers:
- Step-by-step strategies that can be used on their own or in collaboration with a therapist
- Simple diagrams that make sense of the confusing feelings and physical reactions survivors experience
- Worksheets to practice the skills that bring relief and ultimately rejuvenation

--Pat Ogden, PhD, author of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Interventions for Trauma and Attachment and The Pocket Guide to Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
In this succinct and well-organized volume, Janina Fisher distills the essence of modern trauma theory and the deep wisdom of her decades of clinical experience. The result is a welcome, reader-friendly primer for personal use or to support professional work with trauma survivors. --Gabor Maté, M.D.; author of In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction
This workbook is an extraordinary gift for therapists and clients alike. With her trademark compassion, Dr. Fisher succeeds in de-pathologizing and simplifying the complexities of the cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral residue of trauma.
--Lisa Ferentz, author of Letting Go of Self-Destructive Behaviors: A Workbook of Hope and Healing
Renowned trauma recovery pioneer, Janina Fisher offers a superb, user friendly, and comprehensive guide to healing for all trauma survivors and for therapists as well. Grounded in expert knowledge of neurobiological, Transforming the Legacy of Trauma walks readers step by step through an effective process of deep, lasting change, looking both at childhood injuries and at lifelong adaptations to them. Practical, smart, and wise, this book has the power to change your life. --Terry Real, author of The New Rules of Marriage and founder of the Relational Life Institute.
Janina Fisher has contributed meaningfully to trauma recovery in this wonderful workbook. With her up-to-date approaches, practical techniques and worksheets to help guide healing, this book is a must have for resolving deeply-held trauma responses. I highly recommend it.
--Nancy J. Napier, LMFT, author of Getting Through the Day, Recreating Your Self, and Sacred Practices for Conscious Living
Janina Fisher and I have long followed parallel paths promoting greater attention to stabilization in trauma therapy. Here she furthers her careful, educational, common sense, and resource-rich approach, filling a much-neglected niche in the trauma self-help literature. Fisher successfully balances illuminating commonalities of post traumatic conditions while encouraging readers to select, portion, and pace individualized healing paths. This book provides an excellent adjunct to any course of trauma therapy or personal self-help. --Babette Rothschild, author of The Body Remembers, Vols. 1 & 2 (2000 & 2017) & 8 Keys to Safe Trauma Recovery (2010)
Warm and welcoming, Janina Fisher invites therapists and clients alike to compassionately understand the lingering symptoms related to traumatic events. Recognizing that knowledge is power, she provides simple, yet informative, educational tools to help her readers best understand the impact of these events on our brains and bodies. Moreover, she wisely advises that we do not need to remember the details of traumatic events in order to heal – especially, when coping with attachment wounding or trauma-related dissociation and fragmentation. Fisher’s emphasis on “acknowledging the past while staying connected to the present” is a profound path forward that helps us to reengage in the world and reclaim our aliveness.

About the author

We now understand that trauma’s imprint is both psychological and somatic: long after the events are over, the body continues to respond as if danger were ever-present. My professional mission for the past 25 years has been to bring a neurobiologically-informed understanding of trauma to both clients and their therapists. I believe the key to healing is not just knowing what happened but transforming how the mind, body, and soul still remember it. Most of all, healing is an act of accepting, reclaiming, and being able to love our most wounded and rejected young selves.
I have had the good fortune to have been taught by or worked alongside the giants in the field of psychological trauma: Judith Herman, Bessel van der Kolk, Pat Ogden, Dick Schwartz. And as much as these pioneers taught me, the most powerful and gifted teachers I have are the survivors who gave me a window into the inner experience of trauma, taught me what always to say and what never to say, and helped to validate or disprove what the experts and theorists were claiming. It has been a privilege to learn with them and from them. My new book, "Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma" was written with them

She extensively explained the human brain from birth through adolescence. Her research was a huge eye-opener and deeply intrigued me. She established through case studies and examples how our mind/brain develops, ages, grows, activates, and sometimes, parts of the brain shuts off. She revealed how even basic things can trigger a person into unhealthy behaviors and not always for the reasons we speculate.
She spoke about our bodies none verbal memories. This book reconfirms that trauma does not disappear, but we can learn to mitigate our response with direct and mindful work. This pivotal work has many applications for home, school, office, prisons, private therapy, human resources, military, police, etc.
The Legacy of Trauma is a terrific book that should be read, shared, treasured, and referenced often. It was one of my best reads for 2023. There is also an accompanying workbook and a list of resources to continue learning.
Side note to caretakers ---This book would be difficult for someone who is not reading at an average adult level. Since some of the worksheets the survivor fills out are personal it may be difficult for a caregiver to help someone work through this and maintain privacy.
However, I feel that the sentence on page 67 is downright dangerous for all CPTSD sufferers who may be in covert narcissistic relationships. In these relationships, its almost impossible to see the manipulations so the sentence is way too simplistic and could further trap a person already suffering from CPTSD deeper into such an abusive relationship. Here is the sentence. “Assume that unless your partner has beaten you, publicly humiliated you, kept you confined to your home, controlled your ability to come and go, or harmed you and your children, you are possibly triggered by his or her behavior.” Covert narcissists are way more covert than what is outlined here. If only these 5 criteria are used to determine if their partner is safe, the CPTSD sufferer, who believes that sentence is now more trapped than ever before to yet more abuse.

I was introduced to the work of Dr. Janina Fisher by my friend (60 year old man and survivor of extreme childhood trauma). I started to explore her work on YouTube, watching her discuss, explain and expound on the growing knowledge-base in the field of trauma research ( most of her life’s work) and the significant advances in understanding trauma, PTSD and BPD (borderline personality disorder). Discovering her work, lead me to a profound epiphany in my life which I had never before considered (I’m a 46 year old male), I asked myself “Am I a trauma survivor? As I continued to examine my own childhood, my past, my past relationships, my behaviors, my hurts, my habits, my life patterns etc. through this new lens of trauma I became cautiously, excitedly optimistic that I may have possibly, unintentionally uncovered an answer, an explanation as to why I have always been the way I have been, is it possible that I’m not simply crazy? I always labelled my self as defective, broken, difficult. Could it be that there was, in fact, more to me than that? I was convinced that this could be the missing piece to this messy life of mine that never quite made sense to me. I was finally diagnosed by a psychiatrist with BPD- it was so exciting! I was happy and relieved that I could finally begin to make sense of myself. Also, I was very hopeful for the future, for healing.
I bought this book hoping to gain more knowledge, clarity, understanding and hopefully practical tools to help me on my road to my health and recovery. Armed with this diagnosis of BPD, I slowly, thoughtfully, carefully read through this book and do the exercises. I am amazed at how uncanny the descriptions, explanations in the book as it relates to the lived experience of a trauma survivor are not just similar but are almost EXACT descriptions of my own lived experience! It was as if this book was written just for me. Like it was my life story! I couldn’t believe how accurately this book was describing my life. This workbook is filled with exercises and re-usable worksheets to help you through your trauma recovery journey. It can be used on your own or as an adjunct to your existing professional therapy. For sure, the things you will learn about yourself will be invaluable information that can help your therapist to better help you. It’s super easy to read and understand, complex theories, ideas are explained in easy-to-understand terms.
The way in which a trauma survivor has become conditioned to live in a world after a trauma experience or experiences. How a trauma survivor processes the world, why they react, behave and cope with life is all a part of the living legacy of trauma.
This workbook is helping me tremendously with understanding my trauma-self. Anyone with a trauma-related diagnosis (complex PTSD, PTSD, attachment disorder, BPD etc.) must read this book!
