"Dann's compassionate wisdom and warmth is a cherished companion along the often confusing and lonely path of trauma-healing. This workbook is an accessible, practical, experiential guide for anyone who is interested in learning more about somatic therapy and trauma-healing. Therapists will also benefit from this workbook, which offers experiential somatic tools to expand their work with clients, or complementary support for clients to develop embodiment and nervous system regulation outside of therapy." ―Blake Blankenbecler, LPC

However I cannot recommend this book for three reasons. The first is the implied statement that the techniques are evidence based (advertised on the back cover). They are not supported by research in most cases. An example is “bilateral drawing” which the author cites as calming and regulating. This is simply not the case and it is obvious that the author does not know the procedures that are put in place for this type of approach in trauma work.
Also, the references are either quite old or do not provide evidence based support. On the bilateral work, why didn’t this author note at least one of the books available that describe this process in detail? The author did not invent this technique and she read about it somewhere. This leaves one wondering if there are other missing references that were left out for some reason.
I also wish this book were more trauma-informed. Models like Window of Tolerance and the use of the word “trigger” are popular, that is true. This is a minor detail, but it is important to me as a therapist when I provide workbooks to patients who has suffered trauma.
Overall, this book is ironically very cognitive, asking people to make lists and do a lot of writing. Somatic therapy stays more closely with non verbal communication such as movement and sound and even drawing.
Again, the layout is nice so I gave it a three star, but the content is not based on research and is more of a two star rating. The author could have said based on “emerging or best practices” — it would have been much more honest.
