Overcoming A Mysterious Condition Paperback – April 2, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
In 1991, Don Shetterly found himself caught in a medical nightmare that felt like it would never end. A mysterious condition suddenly came on that left him paralyzed – unable to walk and barely able to speak. Pseudoseizures, a multiple sclerosis misdiagnosis, and multiple emergency room and doctor visits left his family wondering how to help him.
With no organic cause of his condition and no manual showing the way through it, Don was left to deal with depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts from the trauma he endured.
In Overcoming A Mysterious Condition, Don shares the concepts that helped him heal his life. It was a journey through all he thought was truth into a discovery of the healing resilience of the human mind and body.
This book takes us further into healing than what we most likely know today. Are you ready to take the journey and have your life changed?
••••••• A Note From The Author ••••••••••••••
In Overcoming A Mysterious Condition, I share the concepts that helped heal my life. Some of the things I share are difficult to write because to share them, I have to relive them. It was a journey through all I thought was truth into a discovery of the healing resilience of the human mind and body.
At one time my life was one of accomplishment and success. I thought I had the world by the tail and nothing could stop me. Nothing in my life had been easy but through every challenge, I had found a way to rise above it and conquer what stood before me.
On that fateful day, my world came crashing down on me. Working long hours almost every day of the week, my life came to a sudden standstill. Going from walking one minute to not being able to stand the next was shocking. Going through pseudoseizures was horrifying and brought so much fear.
In those early days no one knew what the problem was, so through doctor after doctor, test after test, I was sent home to fend for myself. I could barely speak, let alone move, because of my body being paralyzed. My family was left wondering how to help me and all I could do was watch what was happening to me without being able to stop or change it.
It would be many days before the right people came along and asked the right questions. It would be many more days of struggle before I started to walk again and begin my healing journey as a male survivor.
My hope is that this book will take the reader further into healing than what they most likely know to be true. It was not an easy journey, but one that has opened my eyes in a way that can never close. The awakening continues.

About the author

In 1991, Don Shetterly suffered from a mysterious condition called conversion disorder, also known as a somatoform disorder. He experienced paralysis, pseudo seizures, anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts as a result of being tortured, abused, and molested as a child.
Many of the concepts that Don uses to help others unlock their full potential are a result of overcoming the experiences he has lived through in his own life. Through his continued journey of healing, his life has continued to unfold in ways he would have never imagined many years ago.
Don graduated in 2003 from Educating Hands School Of Massage and is currently a licensed massage therapist. He trained under Dr. Paul Canali, a pioneer in trauma healing, beginning in 2004.
Don is the author of Hope and Possibility Through Trauma, published in 2010, and Overcoming A Mysterious Condition, published in 2019.
He is a prolific writer and blogger. He has also released several relaxing piano music CD’s since 2002.

I can relate to so much in the book, but especially the section about giving fear power, and about reclaiming that power from deep within.
I have experienced the healing power of the mind-body connection that is described in this book, and I know it is real, and it works!
Highly recommended and a must read for survivors.
Author Don Shetterly shows us that we do not have to accept this life sentence of continual physical and emotional pain and suffering!
Seeking to inspire others that recovery is truly possible, Don shines a light on how trauma affects and changes the mind, body and even the brain.
Through sharing the horrors of his past and his own personal experiences, Don shows us how true healing is more than addressing the symptoms and how once we become aware and conscious, we have the ability to truly heal.
Don has lived it. You can too.

Ironically, bodywork became a therapeutic option for me. Professional massage therapy has helped me to release my restricted muscles, reduce inflammation and pain, and to release cellular memory; AKA, The Body Keeps the Score. Several chapters within these brilliant pages focused on inner healing, including with processing human emotions, such as anger and grief. Too often, our society, especially organized religion, has a false narrative about anger. Organized religion demands us to "get over it," to not feel our human emotions, to pray it away, to deny it, to just have more faith, to suppress our anger, and they victim-shame survivors by religious gaslighting, stating that anger is a sin. Let's call a spade for what it is. Anger is a NORMAL and COMMON stage of grief. It's crucial that we learn to process our feelings and to NOT bury it, including anger. According to Dr. Gabor Mate', suppressed and repressed anger is directly linked to chronic pain, cancer, anxiety, illnesses, addictions, and emotional distress.
Author, Don Shetterly, inspires us to "feel it in effort to heal it." He shines the light on the importance of understanding the body-mind connection to our own physical and mental conditions. He shares that we must listen to our body and the subtle signals that are alerting us that something needs our attention. For anyone suffering from mysterious conditions, migraines, chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, anxiety, PTSD, depression, triggers, flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, or your loved one is experiencing this, I highly recommend that you read this captivating true story. It is empowering, liberating, and a gentle reminder that you are worthy of healing. Thank you, Don, for your beautiful and courageous message.
