Loxley Fiddleback is not a likely candidate to plot a revenge against members of upper levels of the dystopian corporate oligarchy in which this book is set. With crippling sensory issues, extreme social anxiety, an inability to read anything but the clearest intent and emotions of others, and very little support network, everyday challenges be taxing. And yet, the murder of her best friend and the knowledge of that crime that her ability to see ghosts gives her plunges her into a whirlwind of change that forces her to solve mysteries, fight for her life, make new allies, and seek justice for those she loves.

This book is not easily classified. The author himself referred to it as "dystopian Southern gothic horror with literary pretensions" which seems close, though I'd lean closer to murder mystery/action adventure thriller than horror if I had to pick. At least I spent a lot more time on the edge of my seat wondering how the story was going to play out than being afraid of things that go bump in the night.

The main character is (undiagnosed) autistic, and the book, while third person, is limited to her perspective and very true to it. With her, you experience regular and overwhelming compulsions, digress into random mental tangents that illicit behaviors that are socially ill-timed, and completely fail to receive the necessary emotional queues from other people that would help her make allies and know whom she can trust. This is a fundamental part of who she is- not some initial superficial challenge she suddenly learns to get over- but it makes her victories and relationships all the more poignant. She also experiences the world in an amazingly tactile way that lends easily to a lyricism throughout the book.

It's hard to believe this is a debut novel, and I am seriously impressed by both the plot and character development! My attention was held start to finish, and that's a serious feat! Now to wait for this author's next release!

I really enjoyed this book. It had a unique blend of dystopian alternate history, paranormal horror, and a point of view that captured my imagination in very surprising ways. In a time when many characters have heightened abilities and genius-level problem solving skills, it is refreshing to see a character that struggles with basic things yet excels in ways I never considered. Add to that a paranormal ability to gain clarity from the dead (at a price) and it makes for an exciting, unpredictable story that really sets this book apart from the rest.

I thought Every Mountain Made Low was well-written, with an interesting alternate history setting, a unique protagonist, and some compelling characters. The book was a bit confusing at times, but I believed that to be intentional based on the main character's difficulty relating to the world around her (she's clearly somewhere on the autism spectrum). I did at first find this viewpoint frustrating, but that wore off.

Loxley, the protagonist, spends a lot of time behaving in ways that are frustrating to the reader, because they're not the ways in which "normal" people would react to a given situation. She is brusque, loses focus rapidly, and has little capability to understand the nuances of conversation or body language. I was very much reminded of the main character in Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, who is also autistic (though that's about where the similarities between the books end). I found that book difficult to read at first, too, but like with Every Mountain Made Low, came around on it as I began to accept the hero's differences and reshape my thinking.

The plot itself moves along rapidly and remains pretty coherent, once you accept the supernatural elements. The book's a little short, which means that most of the characters get a bit of a short shrift -- there might be too many for a novel this size. I found the revelation of what happens when Loxley allows ghosts to interact with her compelling, and I enjoyed seeing her dealing with other characters, human and not-so-human (Tailypo is a fascinating character and I deeply wish the book had developed him more). The action was satisfying, the world-building enjoyable, and the writing itself is solid. This book rewards the effort one makes to understand the protagonist's point of view and to join her on her journey. I hope we haven't seen the last of her.
