I didn't like it at first, because I don't like technical books where the author uses a single programming example and carries it throughout the entire book. The reason being, if you don't understand one part of the program, it becomes difficult to understand subsequent examples of the same program that are used later in the book.
However, after my understanding of backbone.js got a little farther along, I went back to using the book again and realized the author had done a masterful job of breaking down the various backbone.js objects and showing numerous examples of how to use each one. So, I realized that this really was a "cookbook".
Now, I refer to the book all the time as I work towards understanding backbone.js. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to understand the latest front-end JS technologies!
