I you're just starting out with Backbone, this book is a must. It can be quite overwhelming at first with all the concepts you need to grasp in order to have a clear picture of the whole process. In my opinion the author does a good job in explaining the different aspects of Backbone.
My only complaint is that a chapter on require.js could have been added in. Apart from that I highly recommend it for Backbone beginners.

I bought this book (the Kindle version) after a lot of research on Backbone.js tutorials on the Internet with little success. I wanted an introduction to the subject. I was not familiar at all with Backbone.js and most of the "tutorials" on the Internet do not provide sufficient step-by-step instructions for my need. After reading the 2 very positive reviews made about this book and seeing a video of the author I decide to give it a try.
The book's approach of creating an application has, on the positive side, the fact that the author does not spend time (or lines of code) trying to prettify the looks of the application. This is good because the focus stays on the Backbone.js code itself and one is not distracted by CSS or similar things just to make the page look nicer.
On the other hand, the code is a bit confusing due to the repetitive use of the same word to to refer to different things. Notably, the word "contact" is used for the collection, the model, variables, parameters, and what not. If the intent was to make the reader understand that "contact" has different meanings in the code, well, for me it just made things harder to grasp. Also, the author has a very minimalist approach to show the code. For example, instead of publishing the new modified version of a file in its entirety, the book's text just says something like "add function xyz after the line that deletes the contact". OK, this is nice for a school homework assignment but this method made me spend quite some time debugging things like a missing comma. Did I learn by doing that? Yes, but it was too much frustrating at the same time.
Last but not least, the book spends too little time (or pages, if you will) explaining the use of Backbone.js on the server side (with node.js). This is the last chapter of the book and a very short one.
I felt like all the mental work to understand most of the things were left for myself, and my expectation what that the book would guide me through that process in a smoother way.
Bottom line is, the book is not bad and today I know more about Backbone.js before reading it. But if you are a complete novice (like me) you may feel the book is not enough for you to learn Backbone.js; and if you are a bit more of an intermediary programmer the book may contain too little to be useful for you.
I am still pursuing a good source to learn Backbone.js.

I wanted a quick intro to Backbone. This book is short and sweet. No BS. No blah, blah, windbag introduction. You do need to know JavaScript and jQuery for it to make much sense, I'm sure. I wish there were more books like this!!

I don't know how this book got any decent reviews, perhaps those reviewing it were friends of the author. I put the book down about halfway through, which wasn't much because it's a very short book. As developers may know, Backbone is a framework, so learning it requires first a description of the framework - an overview, providing first general explanations, then specific examples, starting with simple evolving to more complex. This author provides virtually no explanation for what is going on and how it relates to the bigger picture. The entire book (well I got halfway through) appears to be a very specific example with no context.

I should have trusted my instincts and just put the book down in the very first exercise where he proceeded to describe the standard use of "underscore" and "jquery" as support libraries, and then gave examples using other frameworks, without any explanation that these other frameworks are compatible. I had to constantly dig around to get a perspective on what was going on...sorry, but I can get them by digging around on the Internet. I pay money for books so I don't have to do that crap. This is an example of how my trust in Amazon is waning, the books at the top of the list are often crap.

This is an excellent introduction to building a basic, data-driven, single page application using Backbone.js. It even touches on setting up a server using Node.js!

I had to learn about Backbone.js on short notice. I did some reading about Backbone.js on various websites and referenced another book as well, but nothing really clicked. However, "Instant Backbone.js Application Development" lives up to its name: you learn in an instant. The style in which is was written really catered to how I learn. Essentially, the reader writes an app while following along in the book. The author makes a point to explain every line of code that is written. In the end, in one evening, you have created an app using Backbone.js and actually understand how it works.

I have experience with JavaScript, which this book assumes you have. It's also helpful if the reader has at least a passing understanding of the Model-View-Controller concepts.

Fast-paced and instructive but some of the code steps are missing or something because some of the code does not work except via the download

Having followed the third example carefully I got stuck on an error. Being a beginner at Backbone.js, I had no way of figuring out what the problem is.
The code download proved to be unhelpful.

It ended up begin very disappointing
