The whole point of this book is precisely in its examples.
You'll start by making a small blog with Backbone Express, and you will learn the basics for reading and writing data with a REST API.
The second example (an application for sharing photos) teach you how to handle authentication with Backbone.
The third example (a live data dashboard) shows you how to organize your project when it becomes larger. And you will also learn to make a full CRUD application.
Then you'll be ready to build
- a calendar with event management,
- a chat application with Socket.io and Marionette
- a podcast application (again with Marionnette) with a nice navigation
- and finally a words game
To conclude: when you arrive at the end of this book, you will probably be able to do almost anything with Backbone. I love this kind of teaching by example. And especially when the examples are complete.
First off, this is one of the most buggy code books I've ever read. Part of it is just the complexity of backbone -- it's not intuitive, and even after 2 months (off and on -- definitely not every day working through this book) I still don't find it easy to spot errors in the code.
It doesn't help that the book is full of errors, many of which are corrected in the sample code that you can download that has all the exercises. But sometimes it can be very challenging to find where the error is, especially if it's on the server side and the browser gives you almost no information about the location of the error.
If you buy this book, expect very detailed, difficult examples. It's not a beginners guide in that it's easy examples. He does hard, useful stuff. But you will find yourself spending a lot of time going over his sample code and comparing it with yours to see if you can spot one "period" you are missing (or whatever is the difference).
In the book you use freely available node.js to create a sort of web server on your computer, and use his custom database package (bourne) to do most of the examples.
The errors are found by trying to use the Web Development and Javascript console of the web browser to figure out what is wrong. Lots of times you get errors like "undefined is not a function" and a location in your javascript code that caused the error. Then you have to work backward from that to figure out what called it and why it doesn't work.
It certainly doesn't help that often his sample code completely deviates from what is in the book. It's like he did it the wrong way in the book, later found out that wouldn't work, then did it the right way in the sample code. The code must be perfect for it to work.
However, going through these bugs and finding out where they are actually helps you learn. So it's difficult not to recommend this book -- you learn more if you have to debug the code and fix the errors. However, given the complexity of the language, and at least for me the non-intuitive nature of it, it's a slow going process to complete all these examples and make them work as they should.
It would be nice if a new edition was put out that cleans up the books in the book itself and makes it an easier process to work through these useful real-world type examples.
Note: I am using the Kindle edition of the book.
With each of the examples, we learn about all the possibilities provided us the framework, and how we used to create different types of applications discovering the power of Backbone.js
This book is especially recommended for developers with average knowledge in Javascript, and with at least a minimum level in javascript backend environments such as node.js, where all the examples are run.
