But I find the errors made in the process of bookmaking are very disappointing. At the bottom of the cover of the book, it says "COMPLIED" for "COMPILED," and the subtitle on the title page says "ADAPTED" for "ADOPTED." Most seriously, the editor of the books is said to be "E. H. Palmer" and he is further identified as "Edward Henry Palmer, born 1840, died 1882." Now E.H. Palmer cannot be the editor because he was an "English Orientalist; lord almoner's professor of Arabic, Cambridge (1871-81); during Egyptian rebellion (1882) sent by Gladstone on pacificatory mission among Arabs; interpreter in chief to force in Egypt; ambushed and murdered by Arab robbers" (Webster's Biographical Dictionary, 1980).
The editor of the book is The Ven. Edwin Palmer, D.D., Archdeacon of Oxford, Christ Church, Oxford. He was also on the Revision Committee.
But the text of the book itself seems to be intact since it appears to be a photocopy reproduction of the original although nowhere does it say so explicitly.
The Greek text followed by the Revisers was of far higher authority that had been known and followed by the King James' revisers. Their Greek text was based on manuscripts of the later parts of the Mediaeval Ages, in the English revised version it was perfected by the discovery of far more ancient manuscripts, and by an abundance of quotations from the early fathers of the Church, and use of ancient versions.
The American Standard Version was a minor American revision of the English Revised Version of 1881. It became the foundation of several 20th century American versions, including the Revised Standard Version and the New American Standard Bible.
All these bibles and many more today, are derived from the Greek texts in this bible.
The text which frequently follows Hort, but sporadically adopts Byzantine readings as well, so this is the best of both worlds.
Palmer's keeps the text as close as possible to the KJV and the Textus Receptus, he made only the minimal number of revisions to the Greek text.
The apparatus is, exceptionally clear and easy to use
A noteworthy feature of the apparatus is the degree of detail it gives about the Fathers. These are cited in careful and specific detail. This is one of the best features.
