I'm new to mushroom hunting. I'd recommend anyone looking to do that hook up with their local Mycology Group. This book however is very well written and I really enjoyed it. It is a combination of edible field guide and inspiring and helpful information written in a way that inspires enthusiasm and confidence.

Having said that - as I've discovered - once you step into this, you'll fall in love with it or you won't. You'll end up buying most of the primary books out there. There is no "1" book that does it all. Each has its strengths and weaknesses.

This book I would rate as one of the Top books to get especially if you are new. Its very human friendly and a fun read.

It was a gift for a friend, he seemed happy with it.

I recently purchased this book to add to my mushroom hunting library. Overall, it's a nice book. The pictures are quite nice and the descriptions are good. I do like how the author includes recommended storage methods for each species.

There are only two flaws that stick out to me, one minor and one major. The minor flaw to me is that since the author is apparently from the United Kingdom, some of the mushroom names are listed with that influence. The major flaw I found in my quick perusal happens on page 58 of the book. Within the description for the Velvet Foot (Flammulina velutipes) a caption for a picture of said mushroom states that this mushroom is "difficult to confuse with anything else because of the unusual season of growth..." during the late fall and winter. This bit of advice can get a person killed, because the Deadly Galerina (Galerina autumnalis) is known to fruit on the same wood and sometimes within a cluster of the Velvet Foot. It also has a very similar general look as well.

Overall, I liked the book, but such an error which has a fatal potential is unacceptable.

I also have Peter Jordan's first book on mushrooms. This one is quite similar, but in a much classier and informative format.

This book is very helpful. It teaches you how to properly store, and identify each mushroom it lists, and it lists a good amount. It also explains what the mushroom is best used in for recipes. This book also teaches you how to spore print for identification, or as a hobby, and it has really lovely photographic images of mushrooms. I really love foraging in the wild. Mushrooms are really incredibly beautiful things. I would suggest this book to anyone who has an interest in mushrooms, mycology, or foraging in the wild.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great present idea!

Bought as a present for a family member who is into mushrooms right now. Have to say it was spot on - quality wide, the pictures are all glossy great resolution and very clear.

The descriptions inside are detailed but readable, and it's indexed nicely - a interesting read even if your only vaguely interested.

Most importantly it was very good at spelling out when NOT to eat something and what to look out for. Thoroughly recommend.

Looks very informative, but shame it is too large to sensibly carry around. Looking forward to eating more 'free' food - I have a wood of approximately 1 acre so it is all mine!!

A book on mushrooms I find is not enough to be safe for picking wild mushrooms .
