Outstanding read. Ross can be a little long-winded, but this book is anything but dull. At times it's hard to remember that this is a work of fiction. As our civil liberties are being violated more with each passing day, this book serves as an excellent example of Benjamin Franklin's, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Few novels (or any type of media, for that matter) resonate so very much with a specific culture or a certain time in history as does Ross's book. Unintended Consequences mostly follows the life of a man named Henry Bowman from the time of his birth until his life's defining moment, some forty years later. Though the setting of this book reaches back more than a century and ends in the early to mid nineties, it captures what America is facing right now; an overbearing federal government doing all it can to crush liberty and stifle the free exercise thereof. This novel is, more than anything, about hope. Ross and his hero Bowman show that the most powerful force in this world is a free man unwilling to compromise his self or his ideals and that the change this man and men like him can have on the world is worthy of awe.

There isn't much I can say to persuade you, some stranger roaming the wilds of the internet, to make you stop here and purchase this book, to give it the chance it deserves, aside form that this book has within its pages the means to instill in those who read it a great sense of conviction, and purpose, and hope. America can shine again across the world when each man, a sovereign citizen, takes up the banner of freedom and refuses to go quietly into the night. This book is a learning experience, a tool, a manual, a manifesto, and a wonderful story seamlessly blended into one span of pages.

Read this novel. Give it a chance. I promise it will speak to you.

Given that this was written about twenty years ago it's amazingly prescient and resonant with current events. It's a long book and I wish, a la Steven King's "The Stand", that it was even longer. The arc of the story is well done and the political winds of various eras help create context which, in hindsight, is compelling.

Lots of information on rifles, pistols, etc. as an added bonus if you're the type of person who enjoys that (I do...) and easily skimmed without detracting from the story if you're not.

Multiple characters, multiple story lines, one grand read.

This goes on that small shelf I reserve for books I'll read again, and even again after that.

If an author had one novel in them, THIS would be one I suspect they'd be proud to write.

This book taught me more about history than I ever learned in school. So many times did I have to put this book down, go tot he computer and look up one of the historical pieces he was talking about. I thought "How have I never knew about this?" and each time I'd spend an hour or more reading into the details that John Ross might have just touched on in this book

I've bought almost a dozen copies of this book and given them to numerous friends. Each time, they call me a few weeks later talkign about how blown away they were by how good this book is!

The best liberty-minded, pro 2A novel I've ever read. I'm sure Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged' is often mentioned when reviewing "Consequences." It almost can't be helped. This book is up there with "Shrugged" and Pressfield's 'Gates of Fire' as the standards, the must-haves for 2A/defense-minded folks. The present day action is heavy on the Clinton/ATF/Reno/Waco/Ruby Ridge mindset...and much has improved since but we should never forget the abuses should always strive to increase our gains re: oversight and shall-issue laws. (Always with the idea of complete repeal of '34 and '68)

One unintended consequence of this book is it demonstrates we were a much freer people 235 years ago...

The story begins in December 1906...
It is very engaging from the very first paragraph. Characters are well developed, and likeable. The history lessons are succinct, and readily demonstrate a growing police state complete with jackbooted thugs who give no thought to the rights or lives of the people they trample. Also on display is a corrupt political body (un?)intentially reversing the restrictions placed on government by the constitution, while we the people are being transformed into servants of the ruling class.

Find out what happens when one man is pushed too far...

The book is very similar in style to a Tom Clancy novel. Ross includes a lot of technical and historical information. As someone intimately aware of the technical pieces, his information is absolutely accurate. I researched the (very surprising) historical information and fount it too was accurate. The characters are superbly developed, and the story lines meld well. This book isn't shy about the author's attitudes against federal laws and the agencies that enforce them. There is a lot of anti government action. If you are concerned about the second amendment, civil liberties, or government intrusion this is the book for you.

Since buying this book from Amazon in 2004 - and finishing it in two days - I must have re-read the book at least twice a year since. IT'S THAT GOOD!!!!!!!

I found out about the book via one of the UKs shooting forums and placed an order almost the same day.

As it says in the foreword/acknowledgements section, for the gun control freaks it's like a Stephen King novel.

Please, please, pretty please Mr. Ross - the story begs for an update based on the laws enacted and repealed since first publication. In other words an updated 2nd edition or a sequel (might be a tad difficult though as the story comes to a fairly abrupt - but well deserved - end )

If you can find a copy for less than the price of a kidney - buy it.
