Chickpea Runs Away VEGAN CHILDREN'S BOOK Hardcover – March 31, 2019

4.9 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

Chickpea the cow lives in an overcrowded barn on a large farm. She watches as her friends and family are taken away to an uncertain fate. One day, the farmer leads Chickpea and all the rest of the cows outdoors to a scary-looking truck, and Chickpea knows she shouldn't go. Making a split-second decision, she leaps the fence and escapes into the woods. For the first time ever, Chickpea discovers the world outside the farm and, thanks to some delicious vegan pie, makes new friends who welcome her with loving hearts. Chickpea's story is inspired by many real-life cases of runaway cows.

My 5 year old babe and I went through all the emotions while reading this beautifully written story. I’ll admit it, we were nervous it would be too much for our hearts to handle that day. We were angry and scared, crying, smiling and awwwing. This book was brilliantly written. I’m so happy I found this for us. Helpful with continuing our discussions about a horrific subject of our reality, without it being so scary I want to avoid it myself.

This is a wonderful book which can help human children see the world through the perspective of another, in this case through the eyes of the calf, Chickpea, who expresses her free will by resisting and escaping what she knows to be a dangerous place for her. This book teaches compassion and empathy, and encourages thinking of other animals as beings who are, like the reader, complex, emotional persons, who are drawn to others they love and trust, and who wish to be free of control by those who wish to exploit them. A subtle subtext empowers children to know that *they*, too, can resist and escape when in danger.

A very lovely bittersweet story. We rooted for Chickpea to escape and have a nice life with the vegan family. We only wish all animals could have this fate.

It is so hard to find books about veganism! It is so hard to be honest, yet not horrify our children with all the, literally gory, details. I think this book does. My daughter is 5. I think if a child is much older though and they have already been introduced to animal rights concepts that the child might be ready for a book that tells more of the real truth.

A wonderful heartwarming story. In all ways that matter, Chickpea is like us ... She loves and misses her Mama. She has fears, strength and courage.Chickpea reminds us that “Farm animals feel pleasure and sadness, excitement and resentment, depression, fear, and pain. They are far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined … They are individuals in their own right.” ~ Jane Goodall ... A great lesson we can share with young people is Empathy and Compassion for our fellow earthlings.

I purchased 6 copies ... one for my grand-daughters, one for the local library and the others for families with young people in my community. As a retired teacher, I feel Chickpea Runs Away should be in every local library and elementary school. It would make a great animated story.

I look forward to more stories like this for young people by Sarat Colling.
