Review
There is nothing that can compare to immersing yourself into a mission destination. Not to stand back and watch, like a tourist, but to touch and feel and hug and really help make lives better in the name of Jesus. Jon does a masterful job of letting us peek into the human emotion of God's edict to 'help the widows and orphans.' If you can't go yourself, then take a few minutes each day to go up on the rooftop in Guatemala with Jon, and see it through the eyes of a man sold out to showing the love of Jesus in the midst of real need. It will inspire you to seek God's direction in how to get involved. --Diane Karchner
Jon's heart for Guatemala shines through as he walks us through his experiences firsthand. He shares the complex feelings as well as the reality of life in a different country. His passion for helping others and making a difference are evident throughout the stories and images shared. Rooftop Reflections will challenge and enlighten you to find your dream and take a step towards making it happen so that you can help make this world a better place. --Tammy Helfrich

He and his family have been willing to leave the comforts of America and go outside their comfort zone. As you read through this journal and story, you will be inspired to engage more with those less fortunate in your world at home and overseas, and to follow in Jesus' footsteps by loving and caring for the needs of the "least of these," as instructed in Matthew 25:40. Jon's account takes you through new home construction, serving local people at a medical clinic, interacting with local residents, networking with missionaries and politicians, and doing home repairs. You will be inspired as you see every member of the Stolpe family fully engaged in this effort.
Each chapter in the book concludes with a link to Jon's short heart-to-heart video recorded each morning from a rooftop in Guatemala, making their story come alive and bringing the viewer right into this missionary experience.
In the developed world, we have so much materially, that it can easily be taken for granted. When one ventures outside of their comfort zone, God changes our perspective and does His work of heart transformation. Would you consider taking a mission trip of your own? Your whole family will find this account to be informative and inspiring! This book just might be your stepping stone to joining the Stolpe family on their next journey to serve the poor of Xenacoj.
"We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty." ~Mother Teresa (Pg. 63)
I highly recommend this book!
Where an ordinary book might let you look in from the outside, Jon pulls you in and brings you along through each step of his journey. You'll walk with Jon down the dirt roads, experience the sights, sounds and fragrances, and interact with the beautiful people of Guatemala first-hand. As I read each chapter, I felt as if I was there right alongside Jon, my heart being tugged as his was, my mindset being shifted and eyes opened. I felt my own pace slow down and was drawn in and fell in love with each of the people he met. As you read each chapter, you feel as if you have one foot firmly planted in your own world and another stepping into the unknown, the "extraordinary" as Jon calls it.
But along with all of that, this book offers something else very special as well. A series of videos that accompany the book, one for each chapter, where we get to sit up on the roof with Jon each morning, reflecting in real-time on the events that have transpired. There's something powerful about video and seeing someone in person as they share from their heart. I loved it and it just added to the Rooftop Reflections experience.
I love Jon's vision and dream for building 100 homes in Guatemala and how he challenges each of us to take steps wherever we are to make a difference.
In chronicling his trip to Guatemala and the permanent imprint that was made on his heart by the people there, Jon captures the essence of the gospel, which is loving and serving others in order to earn the right to share Jesus with them. As Jon writes about the events of his trip he gently coaxes the reader to consider the possibility of going on a mission trip. Rooftop Reflections not only offers a look into the lives of people in a Guatemalan village, but also into the heart of a man called to serve the least of these by building homes for widows. Journey with Jon through the pages of this book and you just might decide to journey with him to Guatemala one day.
