"Life Lessons from a 40 something" by Pamela Sommers at a first glance of the cover might give you the impression it is pitched at mostly women and mostly younger women at that, albeit perhaps approaching 40 years of age. Nonetheless, being a sucker for life improvement books I bought it and read it because I love to see what other people's take on approaching such important milestones as a 40th. birthday is.

Yes, this book is a great one for younger folk – of either sex – and a gentle reminder for those who may have forgotten some of life's lessons. In fact, it struck me as being a refresher course in the fact that you are a worthwhile being on this earth, an especially valuable message for those whose confidence and general outlook on life may have been bruised over the years.

The writing is down-to-earth and would not trouble any age group. Its easily applicable lessons in practical matters such as the section on money management, are excellent, especially given Pamela's background and experience in this area.

I also liked the way the book provided great pep talks on the importance and art of not letting fear hold you back in life. Well done, Pamela!

This was an enjoyable read with some nice advice on helping people reach their full potential. I would hand this book to recent high school and college grads as a way to help them get life started on the right foot. While I personally already knew most of the things in the book, it was a pleasant reminder, and who can't use one of those? I did feel the book tried to tackle a bit too broad a range of subjects for one volume, but overall it was a good read.

Pamela Sommers' book does a great job of offering sage advice in easy-to-read, as well as easy-to-integrate, format. Many beneficial sections of the importance of self-care, not everyone will like you, or should be trusted, as well as the importance of self-forgiveness are included. And, her stories help illustrate the points. A wonderful book that serves as a reference when one needs a "pick-me-up" or reminder.

Pamela Sommers, Life Lessons from a 40 something gets right to the heart of the problems .Her practical advice is refreshing. Too many are not living the dream. They do not face the sunrise with joy but dread. They would like to start their own business or express their talent, but are afraid to trust their instincts. Too often we allow someone else to determine our success or failure. Each child should read this book and as she says spread their wings to fly. Thank you Pamela for reminding us it takes perseverance to see our dreams come true.

As a 30-something-year-old, I have to say that these tidbits do come in handy. It's hard to get it perfectly right when we just start out, that's why "older and wiser" hits differently when you are out of your younger days. Pamela Sommers's advice is relatable and possible, and I especially liked the advice about taking care of your skin. I definitely would give this advice to my younger self. Thank you for writing this. We appreciate your hard-learned lessons.

This book provides a lot of useful and sensible advice for young people. It's optimistic, gentle, and down-to-earth, and is written in a friendly and chatty tone. It is different to what I had expected from the cover, as it's not focused on glitzy material things and is relevant to young men as well as women, so I don't think the cover does justice to the contents. I would have found this book valuable to read when I was a teenager.

I often question why we learn our life lessons when we're older because we need them when we were younger. This book really would have been beneficial to my teen years and into college. I like how she intertwines real life stories with real life lessons. She eloquently opens up her experiences to help others along the way. I think I might even recommend this book for my niece and nephew high school students.. I will definitely keep it close at hand for referencing back to lessons I still have to learn.

Where was this book when I was younger? I could have used some of the life lessons in this book. I usually read fiction but for some reason this book caught my attention. I like the fact that the author not only gives advice but follows it up with examples in her own life. I could relate to some of her experiences. It is clear that what her parents instilled in her as a child helped her to navigate through the craziness of life. I am glad she shared these lessons. I would encourage young people to read the book and give it to their friends - regardless of gender.

Heartfelt, warm, and consoling. This memoir masquerading as a self-help book is an unexpected delight. The writing style is conversational and familiar. The content is a highly relatable, candid confessional. Sommers delivers a series of brief personal anecdotes from her own life and the lives of others she has met or known. She reveals her parents are from Mauritius, of Asian descent, and that she herself was born in England and had experienced racism due to having darker skin. This isn't overtly religious - only one bible reference and one mention of prayer - and it steers well clear of the dangerous territory of becoming preachy, whiny, or bitter, which is a marvellous accomplishment in and of itself given the 'life advice' framework of the content. Instead we get a real person who doesn't claim to have all the answers, and certainly does not profess to teach the one right way of leading a life.

It is the story of the child of first-generation immigrants who feels emotionally handicapped from being raised with tough love and the weight of high expectations. This is a woman looking back at the words and actions of authority figures in her life from the vantage-point of maturity, deftly contrasting childhood incidents with observations about adult workplace behaviour.

It is also a light analysis of language and meaning, exploring euphamisms like "banter", "helping", "ugly duckling", and "self sufficient"; the dismissiveness of terms like "selfish", "stupid", "victim", "doormat"; the melancholy of rote utterances like "if only", "money talks", "comfort zones", and people that say they "prefer animals to humans"; and the power behind a simple assertive "thank you".

This book is at both times a consoling 'it's not your fault' to all the disenfranchised children, and a resource for getting along, holding your head high, and eliciting that much-needed smile from your fellow man.
