Emotionally Inviting, mind opening orgasmic experience. Come on, don't be shy.

One of my favorite from Prince. It came out shortly after my birthday in August 1994, so got it on cassette, (dating myself) which did me no good when the player ate it. I later got the CD and still enjoy it to this day. I found myself playing it constantly when Prince passed away. Not widely played, but one that will capture your attention from beginning to end. Very deeply sensual and emotionally sensitive, blended from the social injustices of racism, child abuse to the unforgettable overtures of raw, unabashed sex.
Tracks that are soo explicit you may even blush a little and make some a little uncomfortable. I belive with this offering it was achieved, which will be no surprise to the avid Prince follwer. All of the tracks are masterfully written to deliver the most incredibly emotional roller-coaster ride you can imagine.
Filled with funk, blues, dance and jazz throughout you won't be disappointed. Although, this ride is not for everyone, even the timid can appreciate the effort. My absolute favorites are Pheremone Dark and Letitgo and Solo, I just love this CD. R.I.H.P.

One Sunday morning when I was a teenager, I was playing Janis Joplin's "Kozmic Blues" album. My uncle, who was still pretty young, walked by my room and said, "You playin' Saturday night music on Sunday morning!" Right then and there I assimilated and retained the concept of "Saturday night music", or just "late night music", and that is what I am hearing on this 1994 album by Prince. It is soaked in elements that conjure up romance and other after-hours activities, and the music varies for how you might feel on different nights or even at different hours of one night. The sound of lapping waves, inducing a laid-back attitude, opens the album, and it is heard often - before, during or after tracks. There are sections spoken by Prince in a low-pitched, intimate near-whisper. Although some tracks are harder and louder than the others, for the most part the album is polished R&B, with restrained funk.

The title track "Come" starts things off and sets the atmosphere. It is over 11 minutes long, so yeah, Prince uses a "Slow Hand". It is mid-tempo R&B, grounded by a sly, provocative bass groove. Horns are used frequently, as background for vocals and in instrumental sections. (This applies to other tracks as well.) Near the beginning of "Come", Prince announces, "If U're 18 and over, come here/I got something 4 your mind." After that, you can enjoy some mellow tracks, such as "Space", "Dark" and "Letitgo". "Space" is apparently quite a hot spot: "I've had dreams of us cuddling on the planet Mars/Then when I wake up, I'm all covered in sex." At other times, if a harder edge is desired, you can find it in "Pheromone", "Loose" and "Race". "Pheromone" is a powerful chemical factor: "This is crazy, this is crazy/I could die from the pheromone". The vocal for "Solo" is, at first, a cappella. After about a minute, the vocal is joined by free-form liquid instrumental sounds, and we hear: "The angels, they watch in wonder/When U made love 2 me/Through the rain and the thunder/U cried in ecstasy". The final track "Orgasm" represents just that, with dissonant guitar, then vocalizing, and then finally Prince brings it all home by saying "I love you."

The CD arrived within the expected time frame and was packaged perfectly to avoid damage. Fantastic album as well! I was a "super fan" from the beginning through Purple Rain and then (unfortunately) bailed as I dove into ballet and classical music for many years. His death, however, prompted something in me subconsciously, like it turned on my "super fan" mode again. Now I can't get enough of his music and bemoan those many lost years. But rather than kicking myself, I'm enjoying his music more than ever and listen to it and discover "new" songs daily. This album is no exception. Mostly likely Prince didn't mean for this to be a great album considering the circumstances with which it was released under at the time, but it really is super funky! A full review would require a lot more space and time to write.

My favorite Prince album of all-time

For those 'fans' out there (yeah you, 'Dr. Mo') need to shut their mouths about Prince releasing 'Contractual obligations'. Pretty much the only album that Prince released to fulfill a contract would be 'Chaos And Disorder'. Do people just not think that Prince doesn't want to release music? He is a musician after all. This album is great, and if you don't like, you probably are a fan of Purple Rain, and not Prince.

Prince goes all out in experimentation, lyrically, musically, and visually (visually as in the image of Prince standing before a cemetery, a very powerful idea). The lyrics and theme are very explicit, yes, but Prince pulls it off in such unique artistic quality that I doubt any other musician can do. Behind every track is an underlining emotion of what Prince has always been about.

Tracks like 'Papa', 'Loose!', and the A Capella-like 'Solo' are all unique pieces to Prince's usually music, but don't stray too far from what you hear on, say, the New Power Generation album.

Now, if Prince had to release some music for an album, do you think he would really care about trying so hard to create such a strong atmosphere and style? Each track is a masterpiece that I can listen to over and over. Often I enjoy repeating the entire album right through, because I can't get enough. I would even go so far as to consider almost all of these tracks as my favorite Prince songs, especially 'Papa', 'Letitgo', 'Loose!', 'Pheromone'... well, I'm not going to list all of them.
