There never was a "Dixie."

It's amazing how much nonsense people post in Amazon "reviews." Take this album, whose chief interest is the first manifestation of future Kingston Trio stalwart, John Stewart, who replaced Dave Guard when he split from the group to form The Whiskey Hill Singers and then retired to Australia. Stewart had already written a few tunes for the Trio ("Molly Dee") and was hired, perhaps, for his potential compositional skills as much as his ability to play the banjo (not that well) and his lower-range voice which was needed to contrast, as Guard's had, with Bob Shane's and Nick Reynolds's close harmonies, which carried the Kingston Trio's characteristic sound. Stewart's voice, like his banjo playing, was mediocre, often cracking, and sometimes off-key. It is certainly the weakest of the Three's, and it was often downplayed by Capitol's mixing during his Trio years, but it kept the Trio going as a top act for three more years and then hanging on until it dissolved in 1967, wiped out, like the rest of the "urban folk revival," by the Beatles. Stewart's song writing abilities weren't outstanding, either, being mostly lame "political"-tinged material that came nowhere near the brilliance of the weakest of Bob Dylan's folk-style efforts. Stewart did, however, come up with a decent tune on occasion, like "Chilly Winds" (co-written with John Philips of the Mamas and the Papas), and he hit the jackpot once, with "Daydream Believer," written for the Monkees. He went on to be a mediocre rocker as well, having one hit, "Gold," mostly due to the presence of two future members of Fleetwood Mac on the recording. As for all the reviewers who use this album as a "teaching aide" in classes, and speak of the "research" the singers did in choosing their version of lyrics, good luck, as there is not a legitimate rendition of a Civil War song on the disc, neither in style or in being faithful to the published text. These were published songs, after all (except for parodies like "Hard Crackers," called "Song of the Hungry" here). Even the vast majority of the titles used are not historically correct. For instance, "Shipmates Come Gather" is actually a bastardized version of "The Cumberland's Crew." In fact, two of the songs on "Rebels" ("Hallowed Ground" and "Bessie") are original John Stewart compositions. If you want historically accurate renditions, try Songs of the Civil War on New World Records. New World has fearlessly published accurate renditions of hundreds of American songs, many of which would cause the PC police to faint dead away at one hearing, since they cannot accept America's musical past as it really was. All the comments about "Dixie" being removed from this CD for political correctness is pure fantasy, however. The two albums from which this album is derived appeared in 1960 on Roulette Records R 25132 and R 25133 under the title "Civil War Almanac" volume 1, "Yankees," and volume 2, "Rebels." The CD has ALL 12 of the songs that appeared on "Rebels," and 11 of the 12 that appeared on "Yankees." There is one song lacking, but it is not "Dixie." It is "Minnie Balls," from "Yankees," a parody of the Septimus Winner song "Listen to the Mocking Bird." Maybe Rhino thought it just too silly to include, because at 54 minutes, the disc could easily have accommodated it repeated ten times (God forbid!!!). If PC considerations were in play, the Reconstruction song "I'm a Good Old Rebel" (titled here "I Don't Want no Pardon") would be the #1 candidate, it's bitter, treasonous lyrics putting DIxie's nonsense verses to shame. Despite all this, if taken for what it is, this is a historical and entertaining album, and shows why the Kingston Trio selected Stewart as Dave Guard's successor. The Cumberland Three, like the Trio, "modernized" their performances in a style similar to the Kingston Trio's brand of smoothing out the original nature of the material they performed to appeal to contemporary tastes. This is what drove Dave Guard from the Trio; he wanted something of higher integrity, truer to the source material. Rhino has done a good job with the digital transfers, which compare favorably with the analog originals.

A Historical Note

This CD is made from two separate 33 1/3 LP's issued around the beginning of the Civil War Centennial in 1961 called Civil War Almanac, "Yankees" Vol.1, and "Rebels" Vol.2. As such, it serves now as both a documentation of some of the music of the Civil War era it harkens to, as well as to the musical tastes of the period in which it was recorded. Perhaps unfortunately, it fails completely to accurately reproduce either the sound or the emotions of the 1860's; listeners seeking "authentic" interpretations of Civil War music might be advised to look elsewhere. However, I think it is no stretch at all to say that if it weren't for these and the several other similar recordings of the time from individuals and groups as diverse as Tennessee Ernie Ford and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, that there would likely never have been a Bobby Horton or any of the other modern interpreters of these tunes. Possibly the greatest contribution made by these and the other artists of their day was to keep the music fresh and before a public who were probably familliar only with Dixie and the Battle Hymn of the Republic as songs from that period.

My greatest complaint with the original recordings is the understandable tendency to tweak some of the lyrics ( and even most of the titles! ) of these once-divisive tunes; as well as the anti-historical arrangements and orchestrations. One condemning reviewer here has rightly wondered exactly WHERE Dixie vanished in this compilation - it was certainly present in the original album! If it was REALLY a case of the accused "Political Correctness" of our own craven era is unknown; but it IS a fact that Minstrel Show tunes like it were performed during the 1800's in what was called "Negro dialect". ( They certainly did a butcher job on the simillar Year of Jubilo to remove all traces of it there though! ) I own an original copy of the "Yankees" LP and can verify that all of its tracks have "made the cut" to this CD, but never having had "Rebels" I can only speculate about it. I will also add that the "Rebels" selection called "Bessie" is NOT an authentic period song, which should come as no surprise to those familliar with the actual sound of period music. Perhaps Bessie should have been replaced with Dixie for this CD!

Regardless, if viewed as the product of a "simpler period", the pre-Vietnam early 1960's when our only "war" was "Cold" and innocent Folk Music and its "Hootennanies" preceeded the antiwar Acid Rock and the cesspool that was Woodstock, this CD is a quite enjoyable experience of a period when it was actually "cool" ( to use a term coined by the Beatniks of the 1950's ) to celebrate the American past and its sacrifices in songs such as these. The sound reproduction on this CD is also remarkable, especially given the age of the originals. I have always enjoyed "Yankees" as one of my favorite LP's and am now glad to see that these by-now 50-year-old (!) recordings are still available.

Half Southern songs, half Northern songs, all performed well. These songs are part of our history. Most use unusual lyrics, slightly different than the current standards. I suspect a great deal of research was done by the artists before they selected the lyrics. But, that was back in the early 1960s, long before the internet. It is sad that both John Stewart and Gil Robbins have died. I could not find anything about the third member, John Montgomery, with a google search, but I did not look really hard. I would have given it 5 stars but the liner notes were skimpy.

The Best Civil War CD!

This is the second time I have purchased this CD, as my last copy was lost by one of my students who borrowed it. The songs are beautiful to hear and wonderful for use in the classroom. There are so many historical uses for the CD. I just wish there were lyrics printed with the CD as my students and I have spent time listening over and over to transcribe the words to make song sheets for sing-a-longs.
