Product Description
With the galaxy's best-selling tour guide and a good towel, earthling Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect (actually from planet Betelgeuse) are transported, among other places, to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and back to the beginning of time.
Set Contains:
A suitably eclectic, if not to say eccentric, collection of extra features makes this a wholly satisfying two-DVD set. On the second disc there's an hour-long "making of" documentary from 1992 featuring contributions from the cast and crew, including Douglas Adams; and then there's even more in a 25-minute section entitled "Don't Panic!" A fascinating behind-the-scenes peek at filming as the clock runs on studio time and a look at the recording of the original radio series complete the first part. Then navigate to the "Outer Planets" to find outtakes, a deleted scene, Zaphod's animatronic second head on the BBC series Tomorrow's World, Peter Jones's witty and rambling introduction to the first episode, and more. The series itself is presented in standard 4:3 ratio and remixed Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo or the original mono. --Mark Walker

But, to the series. I was doubtful that this would look better on bluray. I mean there's only so much fidelity you can eek out of video tape, and 16mm, especially late 70's stock, has its limitations. And yet the series looks sharper or more detailed than it ever did in either the old VHS or DVD format. To be honest both VHS and DVD, to me at least, looked about the same, but the bluray really brings out details that were lost in the old home video releases.
Does that make it for a better viewing experience? Eh, to be honest, not really. I mean you watched it to get a glimpse of likes of the lovely Jennifer, but you more or less watched it for the story and overall production. To me the very British one-liners hold up, such as "Late? As in the late Dent Arthur-Dent? It's a sort of threat you see..." or "Nuts to your white mice.", and still make me laugh with the very understated delivery that is so characteristic of British society.
I like the series in all its iterations, and this bluray set really helps keep it alive. For long after were dead Simon Ward, Wing-Davey, and the lovely Jennifer will forever be preserved on bluray for generations to come.
Splurge on a copy.
As far as the actual Program itself. I give it 5 stars as I have loved this show since it was first released, and enjoy having it on BluRay with the additional features. Douglas Adams was a genius. His sense of humor and his grasp of the foibles of humanity have kept me laughing since the first day I started reading Hitchhiker's many years ago.

Oh dear, this has received some hate here on Amazon. I don't really understand why -- on my TV it looks perfectly OK, a bit fuzzy in some places, especially around areas where video editing has overlapped film with video. But if I compare it to the 2002 DVD set, the picture, while not massively improved, is certainly smoother and with similar colour saturation and better detail. As the original films are long missing there seems to have been a simple upscale for this release and the original source is fairly poor anyway.
Yes, the graphics could have been relaid in HD and the titles sequence remade but overall it's not as dreadful as some reviewers seem to think but they are presumably better equipped to review this than me. As has been said elsewhere, it's a pity the Doctor Who Restoration Team couldn't have had a go at it.
On to the extras and we have two discs of them. Disc two is the same as disc two of the old DVD set. None of it has been upscaled or re-transferred so it actually looks a bit shabby, despite the excellent content. Disc three is all-new and some of it is truly marvellous -- there's the HD transfer of all the animated links that might have been seamfully inserted into the episodes, all the surviving film trims (these are also in HD), a wonderful collection from the studio sessions that's by far my favourite new extra and another grab-bag of old clips, radio interviews, trailers and so forth.
Three comments to wrap up:
1. Could this have been fitted onto fewer discs? Probably not: the hour or so of full HD probably makes it too hard to get an acceptable single disc of extras and the programme has to be on one disc to allow a future single-disc edition without re-authoring
2. IS anything noticeably missing? Not really although I'd have loved a commentary -- of the on-screen regulars only Stephen Moore (Marvin) is no longer with us (he's retired) and even Alan JW Bell is still around.
3. Is it worth it? No. It's really too expensive for the collector's edition which just gives you a currently-trendy-but-soon-to-be-dated package format, a postcard and a booklet. The standard edition, which I now wish I'd bought instead, is also a little pricey but it is three discs. My advice is wait a few months until it's around a twelve quid then snap it up.
Overall it's fine but the absence of a commentary is my real gripe, not the video quality.
The remastered blu ray is the best you will get.DON,T PANIC if you feel you are not getting full HD.You were never going to get a series like this pinging sharp images at you.
What you get is a cleaned up picture,a choice of audio and a nice package of extra,s.
Sit back.sip a pan galactic gargleblaster and enjoy the ride.
Ps
Note low star reviews.
It is an upscale it still better than the DVD.As for audio...well I've played it on my 5.1 system and it's sounds good...not great...good.
I'm happy with the purchase, but do agree that the graphics could have been in HD at the very least.
The default sound is the original soundtrack presented in DTS-HD MA dual Mono which is the one I listened to. There are also various DTS-HD MA options; an unused 1981 Stereo mix, a new 2018 Stereo mix and a 5.1 mix but I cannot comment on whether these are any good. There are optional English Hard of Hearing and Production Notes.subtitles.
Having paid £15 for the Special Edition I am happy with the 3 disc set. Slipcase packaging with discs in a blue Amaray case. No region coding on the discs or packaging.

I know this series was originally filmed on video tape, but honestly the quality of this "BLUR"-Ray is nothing short of dreadful. OK, so it has DTS5.1 sound … big deal! The worst parts are the special effects shots. These were pretty ropey when it was made, but surely some budget could have been found to redo some of them using modern CGI? or at least clean them up!
Sorry BBC, but this release is a blatant ripoff that wouldn't even get swallowed by a hungry Arcturan Mega-Donkey . Save your money and stick with the DVD release, this is one Blu-Ray that manages to give Blu-Ray a bad name!
The new version of DVD the picture quality lot worse then original DVD 2002 release. It is wasting money for upgrade of original DVD 2002 release.
Also I though lot of bad review about blu ray version and I go DVD version because I though this programming in non HD and it might better for DVD but not. It same problem other bad review for blu ray!
It not like other DVDs of classic Doctor who of 1970 to 1980 or Blake's 7 DVD its the the picture quality far so good then new The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy DVD!
In some of shot where use in studio video camara in original PAL 50 hz video it still in original DVD 2002 release. The new version of DVD or blu ray it now convert from original PAL 50 hz video to film like 25p in remaster by studio! It very bad went wrong.
It should take off the marketing and go stick original DVD 2002 release!
