This is the unlikely Brother duo (and their drummer friend) hailing from Sweden, making music out of Paris, and enraptured with all things America. So Dune's "Switzerland Heritage," is truly an international affair. All they need is to mix another country in the fold to really diversify...perhaps a fiercely neutral country...say Switzerland and badda boom, we've got something.
"HD Rider," the CD's track 2 is a unique one. Picture a Hare Krishna chant replete with chanting, bongos and a mantric lyric outpouring, "from my window to the west," and you've got it. The uniqueness doesn't stop there my friend. There's the minor keyed and oh so lovely "After Y2K." Remember that non-event? A slight electric guitar strum, a plodding simple drum snare beat, and the interchanging Andre and David-Ivar smooth and high vocals give this song a feel, a scene, a soundtrack to one's life. "Would I hide here / the trunk of your car / or the bathroom / Would I hide here / from the bottom of your sorrow / or under your sheets / would I hide here?" OK, so maybe it's not a soundtrack to your life unless of course you were kind of a twisted, tortured soul-type, living in Paris and distinctly Swedish. It's a beautiful mood-setting song none the same.
Then there is the album's highlight, the mega indie hit, "The Speed of a Star." It starts with an early REM-ish jangle and kicks in with the drums and vocals, "Baby, you see / you made a lonely man of me / I can't stand to look at your face / and when you move your legs with grace." It's not quite a love song but the Ivar brothers high and lonesome Swedish whine works and works well. There's enough musicality here to fit in Franz Ferdinand's tour van...heck let's say their Euro-trash semi for that matter. These Dune'rs are gifted.
Forget about Volvos and ski jumps, Ikea's minimalist crap furniture, and let's not mention the meatballs...can there be something more grossly Swedish? But Herman Dune transcends and goes all the way to Switzerland to do it. So a legacy to Abba and Ace of Base? The Dune isn't that. But they are something oh so much better. An infinitely listenable group hailing from that beautiful country up north. Don't miss out on the Herman Dune craze. What ya waiting for North American...get this CD yo! ...mmw
