No external power supply!!

This card does not come with an external power supply. My Flash drive was detected but a file transfer did not work due to the lack of power supply. I'm ordering a card with the power supply (ex: Belkin) after my experience with this one.

Linux Friendly Device with a Unique Power Function!

I own both this Apricorn device, and another AKE branded one. The main difference with the other (AKE device) is that it has it's own power supply (taken from an available USB port). Both have their advantages, but this Apricorn PC card USB adapter is especially convenient in my opinion because:

(1) It is completely flush with your laptop body when the connector dongle is removed (very simple to remove the dongle, so there is never any need to remove the actual PC card).

(2) The dongle allows you to be more careful when connecting devices by using the flexible wire connector. It's easy to just pick it up so that you can see the ports properly, and connect your devices without worrying about poor alignment or damaging the USB plugs.

(3) The slim profile of the dongle connector (barely thicker than the PC card itself) near the body of the laptop, means that this device can be used "stacked", on laptops with two PC card slots occupied, even when there is one immediately on top of the other (no spacer in between).

(4) IMPORTANT: One of the USB connectors provides the usual 100mA of current, that is sufficient for USB flash drives and mice, but will not usually power some more demanding external devices that do not have their own power supply. This includes USB hard drive enclosures, CD drives and DVD drives. The other connector, however, provides 500mA of power, which DOES power some of these devices, EVEN if they do NOT have their own power supply.

Caveat: it is possible that the useful 500mA power function may not work sufficiently well to power all devices on all laptops and/or operating systems. This would appear to be confirmed by the reviews stating as much. I have not tested it extensively, but I do know that it will not correctly power at least some DVD drives on at least some laptops using Linux (the power function was not tested with Windows).

The other is an AKE branded product:

2-Port USB 2.0 PCMCIA Cardbus PC Card (fully inside for Notebook)

It too is completely flush with your laptop body, but it needs no dongle either, so there's nothing to carry around in your bag for normal use ... BUT:

(A) Higher power devices that do not have their own power supply may NEVER work with this AKE product without using the clumsy adapter included. This basically eats up one of your existing USB ports to provide additional power to the USB ports on the adapter. You are left with an unsightly wire going from one of your original (OEM) USB ports to the center power connector on the adapter. For example, if you started with two OEM USB ports on your laptop, with this PC card solution, instead of now having four available USB ports, you will have 2+2=4, less one (for power), equals a total of just three usable ports.

(B) Because typical USB connectors are more bulky than the slim dongle connector on the Apricorn adapter, you can NOT stack this AKE PC card on top of another on those laptops that have two available slots. You will be limited to using one PC card only at a time (unless the other one does not protrude from the body of the laptop either). This is true even for simple devices such as USB mice. Perhaps some USB devices (such as the popular nano devices) are sufficiently slim in height to solve this limitation, but just about all of the connectors I have used will not work. This can be of special importance if your wireless internet access requires you to use the other slot for a PC card (your laptop does not have a built in "hidden" wireless card that you can use instead).

In my case, I don't really care either way (when choosing between these two cards) since I just connect any demanding devices on one of the OEM USB ports on my laptop, and keep the additional USB ports provided by the adapter for other less demanding uses. The Apricorn device does seem to have much better build quality and vastly superior packaging in my opinion (the AKE is basically wrapped in a thin bubble wrap sleeve and a plastic bag, both stuck inside a shipping envelope). Apricorn also has a "proper" website, with an actual "support" link, in case technical support is ever required. AKE seems to have a website, but there is no mention of this product (or anything similar) or support, and I haven't tried to contact them.

AHOY LINUX USERS: I have successfully used BOTH of these devices with Ubuntu 10.04. No installation whatsoever is required for Linux - it works out of the box. I will not be testing the Apricorn with Windows, but I did use it initially with W2K with no problems.

Convenient lil' gadget

This USB 2.0 Cardbus Card is manufactured by Apricorn. Its a perfect upgrade for those who have older laptops with only USB 1.1. Unlike other USB PCMCIA cards, this card does not obstruct or take up two slots. The USB ports are on a dongle that connects to the card itself. The following is an excerpt from the manufacturers website:

I would have rated the product a 5 had it not been for the card breaking. The connector from the dongle to the card itself snapped. While the problem was due to my negligence, you should be aware of the issue, and be careful with it.

A waste of time

My card refused to recognize three different peripherals - a Buffalo USB2 hard drive, an USB2 to Ethernet adapter, and a Maxtor hard drive. All three function well on either my laptop's native USB1.1 or Firewire ports. The user guide is useless. Installation was easy and device status confirms that all appropriate drivers are installed.
