My son was only five months old when we bought these blocks. We have to supervise him when he plays with them because they are meant for 1+. I knew this when I bought them and was hesitant but they were so adorable that I had to put them on my Christmas list. I am so happy that I did because even at 5 months he is able to play with them. He especially likes the block with the bell and once he picks it up likes to hit it into the other blocks. I build the blocks into a pyramid and he likes to knock them down, we do this for about ten minutes and he really enjoys himself. So happy I bought these blocks because they will be a great toy for years to come. They are high quality with a non-toxic finish, so when my baby puts one in his mouth and starts chewing on it I can feel at ease. Great product I can't wait to buy the other blocks that Haba has to offer.

My biggest issue with these blocks was the quality of the ones we received. One block had a crack running up the side, and we had to put it out of commission as soon as they arrived. Terribly unsafe for a baby.

The block with the bell and the one with the clicky balls inside it also had a wooden dowel visibly poking through the side on each block. Not sanded smooth or anything.

I'm disappointed as I've always loved HABA toys, and even after my husband spent a LONG time on the phone with their customer service, the best they said they "could do" was to offer us a discount of 20% if we bought any other products from them!

Every different block does a different apparatus; one, has a tinker bell, one a wooden dowel insert that makes a tapping sound, one a round wooden tapper, one a yellow filter, one a mirror and one a kaleidoscope. I believe they are designed to teach the connection between motion and related sound, as well as visual effects of manipulating light.
Having said that, our 7 month old just likes to knock down a stack of them and shake the one's that make noise. Then, of course, the blocks also go into the mouth. No worries. The color is harmless water based paint.
These are built to last for years, maybe generations!

Overpriced and chipping all over....

I only buy toys made out of wood or other natural materials, and am painfully aware of the cost of doing so. Yet, I'd rather buy fewer quality toys than lots of plastic junk to trip over.

Well the Haba discovery blocks are just too pricey and not durable at all. When I opened the box, I thought to myself - 30 dollars for THIS? To add insult to injury, my boy only was interested in the block with the bell. I read one of the reviews here pointing out the presence of arsenic in the bell (?). Had no time to research this claim, but hid the block with the bell anyway for peace of mind. Only a few weeks later, the corners of the blocks were all discolored from mouthing and chewing. I am hoping Haba paints are truly nutritious, or else my boy is in trouble. A year later, the blocks are rarely played with, and yet they look awful. Get some natural wooden blocks finished with beeswax (on Etsy perhaps), and pass on these. In fact, even painted Plan Toys or Maple Landmark toys hold on a lot better than Haba (and are cheaper).

I have not given these to my baby yet, but I am disappointed in the quality upon opening them. We have loved every haba product we've every gotten, but these feel like they missed the "finishing"process. The hollow spaces in the blocks (where the bell, mirror, bead, etc. are) is rough, unsanded, and not painted. I know my little girl is going to want to finger the little things in the blocks, but it feels like she's going to get splinters. Very unlike haba.

I think I ordered these too early, at 16 months my twins are just now starting to be a bit more interested in them but think the Wonderworld Rainbow blocks are much easier for them to use and explore. These are just a bit too small and subtle. The blue and red, push button, one fascinates my baby boy the most. Maybe later they will enjoy them more

Like all Haba toys, these blocks are made of mostly natural materials (mostly wood) and are well-constructed. Each block has something special inside for a baby to explore. I only wish I had realized how small these are because even my baby's tiny hands have trouble poking around at the objects inside. Still, it's an interesting idea, and welcome in a world filled with to much plastic as it is.
