- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2017NOTE: I have never received any financial incentive related to a review on Amazon. No free products, discounts, etc.
Great results for DLSR video of music (solo flute, drums, jazz band, and symphony). A matched stereo pair of these microphones provided much better results for me that a single, much higher quality (more expensive) microphone. Very little noise and rich sound using a TASCAM DR-701D -Channel Digital Multitrack Recorder connected to a Nikon D750 1543 24.3 MP Digital SLR Camera Body 3.2 Inches TFT-LCD 50 mm f/1.4 lens (Black). Even straight into the camera, sound is so much better than through the camera alone or through a TASCAM DR-40. (For exclusive video use, consider just using a less expensive microphone pre-amp such as the JuicedLink Riggy-Assist Dual-XLR Preamplifier with Phantom Power and Metering.)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2020I own several Rode pieces. A couple NT1-A mics, videomic, the incredible K2 Tube Condenser, and now a pair of the NT5. I bought these to live mic choirs and also to studio record choir Vocals and other assorted instrumentation. As will all Rode products, the construction quality is absolutely superb and you wont find anything built better. I’m constantly in awe at how much quality Rode manages to cram into their products for what they charge.
You get a nice case and mounting hardware although if you play to do ORTF or XY chorale recordings then you need to also get the stereo mic mount bar separately
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2012If you need a cheap km184ish sounding mic then you are looking in the right place. To my ears they are a little harder and brighter than the new km184. I recommend these as a must for anyone on a budget looking to track acoustic instruments. They respond much better to nice preamps but then again so do all mics.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2010First off, I am an audio engineer, I recommend these pencil (cigar) condenser microphones to ANYONE. From live sound, to recording, to whatever. They sound so warm and full. I've used them on drums as overheads and on acoustic guitars and they sound amazing, check out some videos on youtube and my studio for some samples purevolume.com/ASideMobileStudios. I bought them refurbished, but there's nothing wrong with them thankfully. Very little hiss. Plus, they get a 10 year warranty. Make sure you register BOTH microphones on rodemic.com since they have different serial numbers. Not sure what else to comment on other than these are great microphones at a great price. Can't go wrong with these in your microphone collection!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2017Exactly what I wanted and more than I expected. The mic clips each come with a removable adapter for a photography stands. Super-convenient and the box is compact, lightweight and seems pretty protective!
Although I bought this from Amazon, I would recommend getting them elsewhere because the sales tax is so high in WA where I am based

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024Listing photos show a hard case. Received mics, soft pouch (not pictured), screens and clips but no hard case. Don't show it in the picture if you're not going to include it in the sale, or clearly state that the case is not included. I'll update my review if I find anything else wrong.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2013I just bought this matched pair of Rode NT5. But while it says "pair" on the box, I wonder if they actually tested the frequency response and other factors before boxing them as a pair, because the serial numbers of the two were sequential. Of course, it could be just luck that two sequential units matched up. There is no certificate saying they are matched. I'm only giving it three stars because of the sound quality I found. Here are my thoughts:
Out of the box, the grey paint finish of the mics was a little less satin shiny on one side of each mike versus other sides. I think it might have all little to do with shipping, as the mics would be rubbing around in the box during transit. Or the finish paint wasn't applied so well. So right there, I have to deduct a little, since the fit and finish aren't as good as a 5 star would warrant.
The shipping box is just plain brown cardboard with factory-sealing tape (I don't mind, why spend money for fancy graphics, and besides, this is a pro product, so you don't benefit from a fancy box). Inside, you get a black plastic carry case with a piece of tape on the handle to signify factory sealing.
In my review of the NT1A, I found some units had a low-level popping sound with you first plug them in and listen with the preamp turned up high. There was some popping on the NT5 but it seems to have gone away after a few hours.
The fit and finish of the capsules seem really good. I don't notice anything wrong here.
I don't use the included mic mounts because it's hard to adjust and you probably have to push them in really hard to get them to engage, and I'm wondering if the sudden acceleration will damage the mics. I have the futuristic-looking ones with the black rubber bands on them.
The black carry case doesn't look like the picture in the Amazon ad. There is foam on the upper surface (that folds down onto the bottom section), and you get cutouts in the plastic and you snap the mics into place. It's not as forgiving of being dropped, for instance.
OK, let's talk about the sound. I set up an ORTF arrangement, as I feel that testing a mike in stereo tells you more than doing it in mono.
The equivalent noise is low, but not as low as the NT1A. It's quiet enough for serious studio work.
I will be very candid here. Compared with the nice, rich, full-bodied and liquid sound of my NT1A in ORTF, the NT5's sound is rather lean, hard, bright, compressed and harsh. While recording, when I walk around my hardwood floor, I cannot hear the bass boom of my feet (but I can hear it clearly with the NT1A). There is a lot of high-frequency detail, though, so if you want to mike cymbals or electric guitar (the bright, razor-sharp guitar sound of Van Halen or Scorpions, for instance), you'll like this mic. I don't hear any full-bodied bass. You also lose some 3D ambiance and reverberation of the NT5 versus the NT1A because the NT5 sounds clinical. When walking around to the back of the mic and doing a voice test, there is no disconnected bass. The sound at the rear of the mics is a little brighter and about half the volume of the front of the mics.
I was ready to pack everything and return it...but remembered to try out the NT5 with a pop screen (and I would probably default to using it since the screen protects the mic from germs and such). Ok, that's a little more like it...the pop screen knocks out a few decibels of high frequencies, smoothing out the highs. OK, it's still a bit lean, bright, compressed, and harsh compared with the NT1A, but not so much anymore. The highs seem to be not so flaming hot now, but still there's no bass, no warmth, no fullness to the sound. Overall, it still sounds too bright and harsh. In the end, I decided to return them for a refund.
I understand that an LDC tends to have a rich, warm full sound (since they're used a lot for vocals) but SDC pencil mikes tend to have a brighter, more clinical sound, so this may be par for the course.
The noise level of the two mics seems identical. The volume level and sound quality of both mikes seem identical, so no worries here.
I get the impression that doing a burn-in did not improve the sound quality. I plugged in phantom power and left the mike on for 24 hours or more. It got rid of the popping sounds.
I would give this mic 3 stars because it doesn't really sound round and lifelike. It may or may not be a consequence of the SDC design, but it just doesn't sound like what the human ear hears. For amplified instruments, this mikes may be attractive (since such sounds are artificial), but for acoustic instruments, I don't think it duplicates their sound naturally, for the mics sound electronic (whereas the NT1A sounds life-like).

ToniReviewed in the Netherlands on August 16, 20244.0 out of 5 stars Great quality
Unfortunately, I never recieved this pair of mics that I bought from Amazon, but I got my refund, so all is good. I later bought them at a local music shop. Recording with them encourged me to do this review. These are a semiprofessional pair of condenser mics that will do, virtually, a professional job. The most important thing to remember is that the placing of the mics is key; if it does not sound right, there will be nothing wrong with the mics. Just try a different position. Good luck!
Rakotomanana AlainReviewed in Canada on August 2, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth it
I needed it for choir recording and for that purpose, the pair is fantastic. This is my third pair and so far, has been great. It costs three times the other pairs, but if quality is what you are after, it is worth it.
It sounds very rich, and clean. Noise level is very low. I use it on XY, and sometimes, on spaced pair, and it works wonderfully.

Muy buenos en relación con el costo, la calidad también es muy buena!!!
VinstonReviewed in India on July 3, 20175.0 out of 5 stars Good for church choir.
This is the good microphone for the small church choir. Instead of using multiple microphone you can use just one pair of MT5MP Rode to get the overall choir performance.
