1995 F150 302 was lighting up the "check engine" light only after warming up - sometimes blinking, sometimes solid. Truck seemed to run fine, decent mileage and pretty darned smooth most of the time, not too many "hiccups". About 16 months ago, I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) with a part from the local auto parts store.
My handy ODB-I diagnostic scanner, which is more convenient than counting blinks on the instrument cluster, read codes 121 in the current test plus 122 and 125 in the stored memory faults, indicating a problem with the TPS or wiring to it.
Just having the TPS malfunction once in a while is enough to get the check engine light going or cause occassional throttle response issues, a slight buck once in a while on a cracked throttle after decel.
I checked out the old switch and wiring - it passed the factory tests with an ohm meter, even when tapping on the throttle body. There was no coolant or oil on the old switch. The old switch just had an occasional contact fault inside that only appeared after driving a bit.
The switch is NOT adjustable if properly installed. It mounts in one correct position on the throttle body, which must be removed to properly install this switch. (get a throttle body gasket if you do this job).
This time, I bit the bullet to get this Motorcraft TPS, which looks just like the original one that lasted well over 100,000 miles.
No more check engine light. Truck runs even a bit better than it already was running, which was very good.
If this part fails early, like before at least 100,000 miles, I'll post back here and deduct stars!
Meanwhile, the 23 year old truck marches on to the coming 1/4 million mile mark. I sure wish they made my truck brand new, I'd buy one so that I could take better care of it than the first owner did.
