Excellent Nano Alternative

Since I have most of my music files ripped in WMA format, I've been looking for a flash MP3 player to compete with the IPOD Nano. After much research, I decided to take a chance on this newly released player.

I'm very impressed to start. The player is small (just a bit thicker than the Nano), and fairly light. The screen shows excellent color- based on the menus. I'm not planning to use it much for video or photos, so I'm not very concerned with the screen size, which is expectedly small. The player in general is very easy to use. I looked over the quick reference guide and didn't even bother with the user guide (user guide is in PDF format on the cd-rom.) The overall appearance is excellent.

You can load music by dragging and dropping, or using Windows Media Player 10. I prefer to use WMP10 to sync, since I have my music organized well. Syncing in this manner was very simple. I didn't encounter any issues with the first two syncs I've performed. If you have your id3 tags correct, the Sansa will display your music by Artist, Album, Songs, or Genere. There's also a "To Go playlist". The Sansa sorted my music just fine. The display is informative when playing music. The sound so far is excellent. I've used a few different headsets to test it and have no complaints.

The center dial/wheel rotates and glows in a bright blue. It allows you to scroll through menu items and to increase/decrease the volume. The directional buttons around the wheel are a little difficult to use with only one hand. Because the center dial is raised so much, you end up needing to use the tips of your fingers to press the buttons that surround it. I suppose it will take a little getting used to- but it's not a dealbreaker for me.

Following the precedent set by other companies. The USB connector is of course proprietary. This is currently the only way to charge the Sansa, so don't lose it. I don't see any wall/travel charges offered yet- even at the Sandisk Website. Since it's new- there aren't really any accessories offered. This isn't a concern to me personally- so I bought it anyway. I definitely would like a separate charging apparatus, rather than having to charge via USB- so I hope Sandisk offers such an item, sooner rather than later.

It comes with a small velvet pouch. I'll be searching for some sort of "skin" to protect the player, instead of relying on the pouch. It's just not efficient if you want to protect and use the player at the same time.

Pros:

It looks beautiful.

Plays WMA Files.

Easy to sync.

Drag & Drop available.

Sounds great.

Flash memory- so no need to wory about hard drive skipping.

2GB of memory with models that go up to 6GB.

Expansion slot for miniSD cards for more memory.

Lots of features: Music, Video, Pics, FM, Voice Recording, etc.

Price - $159.

Cons:

Buttons can be hard to use.

Charging via USB only (at this time.)

Not many accessories offered (yet.)

Doesn't support many file types.

Again, please understand when reading this, that my primary use is for music. All the other features are merely a bonus for me. So if you're looking for something to use regularly to play video, pics, etc- please do your homework to see if the player is a good fit for your needs. Most of the time when I read negative reviews, it's because the reviewer bought something that did not fit their needs. Companies are in business to sell their products- do your own research to determine if the product is right for you.

I am a very active woman and would recommend this device to everyone. I like the dial with the ridges as with my bike gloves on I can easily manipulate the device. The customer service department has been great in responding to questions both by e-mail and over the phone. I have downloaded 500+ songs. I have also downloaded books from my local library system for free. I haven't yet used the movie aspect. The radio tuner is very poor in my rural, northern wisconsin area. My computer operating system is XP pro. I see this device also plays WMA format and this would allow for even more songs so I will check into this option. I purchased just this week the new arm band and protective case which I really like much better than the earlier silicone cover which I do not like as well. My little son can operate this system very well and I don't have to worry about him deleating anything accidentally as this is only done on the computer hookup. We have a dual jack so we can both listen on the motorcycle. I see on the sandisk site that there is a new accessory that will allow us to play over our car radio and charge at the same time. I will get this as soon as available. The free books from the online library is so cool on this. No more switching over cd's!

Sansa - an excellent product!!

I've been looking at mp3 players for a couple years now. Always wanted one, never had the spare cash, etc. I mention this so that my readership knows from what perspective I'm writing this review. I've never owned an iPod...or even an mp3 player, for that matter. This device has several things going for it, in my opinion:

1. Price - I don't want to say that this is normative, but I paid $110 for this device. For a device with good sound, 2GB of storage, and a great interface, that isn't bad AT ALL.

2. Scrolling Wheel - I know iPod has something similar, but I'm talking about what I like on this device. Easy to control the volume. Easy to navigate the menus, etc.

3. When it's set to MSC USB mode, it acts just like a hard drive when plugged in!! Drag and drop your files. No playing with a magical interface that tries to do everything for you, so you can't fix it when it breaks.

The downsides are there...very few devices are close to perfect.

1. As has been pointed out, the USB cable is proprietary. Standard USB plug on one end, proprietary SanDisk end on the other. It's annoying if you happen to be a geek like me. I almost always have a spare USB cable plugged into my computers, and I carry one around with me in my bag. Now I've got to buy a spare cable. It's not major, but it is a downside.

2. No 3rd party devices out for it yet. DLO and Griffin have announced some neat devices, but they won't be out until this winter. I want an FM Transmitter that also charges the device. Nothing is out yet, so I must be patient.

In all, it's an excellent device! I highly recommend it.

Product is an excellent alternative for some of the more sought after brands. It actually does a lot more than some of the more expensive MP3 players out there and the radio feature give it the edge but since the antenna is apparently built into the earphones, the signal could be a little better. The player interfaces well with the computer and uploading songs was a simple straight forward task. Although some feel that the player has limited storage (I think 2GB is more than enough for the average user) the expansion slot provides may possibilities. The size of the player is just right and controls are easy to use. All in all an excellent item. My teenage daughter absolutely loves it.
