Not Perfect, But Really Groundbreaking

As someone who works in a church, I have studied most of the different Bibles. This Bible was suggested to me by one of my superiors. Very quickly, by the mid 1900s, certain powers had contemplated a revision of the 1885 "English Revised." (The ER is of course a revision of the "King James.") Later, the powers decided on a fresh translation. They wanted a Bible that would be accurate, readable, and understandable. One really groundbreaking thing about the "New English" is that it was worked on by Roman Catholics, Anglo Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodists, and others. I consider it an interesting cross between the "Good News" and the ORIGINAL "Revised Standard." To be sure, this Bible does have some questionable choices. In "Luke" 2:32, Simeon refers to us Gentiles as 'heathens.' The "Good News" and "Revised Standard" properly refer to us as 'Gentiles.' Also, in the NE, "Luke" 6:37 reads: "...acquit, and you will be acquitted..." The "Good News" uses better wording: ..."forgive others, and God will forgive you." The RSV reads: "...forgive, and you will be forgiven." But, that said, the "New English" has a lot of good points. Like the RSV, it maintains much beauty of the "King James." Like the "Good News," it has titles that break up the passages to give the reader an idea as to what the passages pertain to. It also puts some passages very well, and uses clear + accurate wording. Some especially good passages are: "How blest are those who know their need of God; the kingdom of heaven is theirs" ("Matthew" 5:3), "...what will a man gain by winning the whole world at the cost of his true self?" ("Matthew" 16:26), and "There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends" ("John" 15:13). So while I would sooner suggest the "Good News" or the original "Revised Standard" as your source, the "New English" is a great version to have. It is an interesting as well as significant part of history.

Literary Translation; Read for Pleasure

This translation comes close to King James in literary quality, and has the advantage of modern scholarship. Audin did the Book of Job, and it is worth the purchase just for this one artist.

Good Reference Bible

This is one of the few translations that contains the apocrypha. I like to decide for myself what should go in and what shouldn't. I think of all of the books in the apocrypha, everyone needs to read the book of Esdras. It contains information not contrary to the rest of the Bible, but more in depth. Esdras asks an angel a lot of questions I would ask, and gets answers that clear up mysteries surrounding the creation, the end of time, and this present life experience. I don't care for the old english language, and in some places the footnote would have been a better fit in the main text, but all in all an interesting addition to a Bible library.

The way this read I thought it was the whole ESV plus the books that are not accepted as scripture when it got here it is only the books that are not accepted as inspired scripture.....Very disappointing
