You have to push the large silver button at the pivot-point to adjust the size. Thank you to the Internets for teaching me before I returned them!

Wider range but compromised grip

I appreciate the wider range and the finer grain adjustment offered by the groove lock. There's not much of a learning curve and it's really quick to simultaneously press the button and move the jaw into position. In fact, if you're just narrowing the gap you can just push on the handle of the lower jaw without using the button.

However, note that the angle of the channel to the handle is much shallower than in a traditional channel lock. As a consequence, when you are using the wider and narrower ranges of the pliers the handles are quite misaligned and compromises the grip and leverage you can apply. I feel that with a traditional channel lock, the handles stay more parallel for most gripping situations and provide a more confident hold.

In summary, these pliers offer an interesting compromise. You gain a wider adjustment range and convenient adjustment mechanism at the cost of a more awkward grip and possible loss of leverage.

I have had these for 5 months and have put them to the use regularly. I like the design and they do a fine enough job, but the handle material just slips right off. It's not like they fall off, but if you are gripping the end of something to pull on it, like a drainage hose through the hole you just cut, the handles start to slide off. They are pliers, they are meant to be versatile, so this isn't something that you shouldn't be doing....they should be able to do this. Not very happy, as I have channelocks that are 20 years old that don't have this issue. Buyer beware. Guess I'll have to epoxy these to get them to stay.

I really wanted the Knipex equivalent to these after using a friends pair a while back. But since they are purely for home/amature use I could not justify the massive price difference. Sure the metal/hardening quality is not the same and these will probably not hold up under daily use but for an occasional user these things are awesome. Nothing wrong with standard channel locks, of which I have several pairs. But these really give you some extra flexibility and ease of use.

I also bought the 12" version of these and they work well.

Simply plier perfection!! No joke the big grips spread the load on your mitts, and the easy and much more precise adjustability that is also faster thsn a normal one.. these are all the "little things" though as the miracle in these lies with the v groove and the staggered jaws. Provides unparalled gripping that is only otherwised seen with a pipe wrench. These are much more handy, and much more versitile! I always appreciate when engineers get it right! Though there is another German brand that has almost a identical model called Knipex i think... they cost more and i am pretty confident are the original. They must not have a patent or it expired. Either way these are half the price and have beefier grips! My only concern is the adjustment slots.... they work excellent but are a tad large.. leaving little frame left for strength. The original brand has a bit smaller slot leaving it less likely to fail there.

Not as good as Knipex Cobras, but more than good enough for non-professional use!

I have the 8 and 10 inch set of Irwin Groovelocks, as well as Knipex Cobras and the Knipex Pliers wrench. I will say upfront that the quality of these Irwin pliers is a definite step down from the German-made Knipex pliers. However, given that these cost less than half as much as the Knipex Cobras, I still believe that they are a great deal and a great tool for homeowner use.

If you are planning to use these pliers heavily in a professional setting, I would recommend getting the Knipex pliers instead.

Functionality-wise, these are almost identical to the Knipex Cobras, and they actually have a slight advantage in that you only need to push the button in to enlarge the size of the pliers. The Irwins have a ratcheting mechanism so that when you want to make the jaw opening size smaller, you can simply push up on the top handle without having to depress the adjustment button. On the Knipex Cobras, you need to push the adjustment button in to enlarge AND to reduce the size of the pliers. Knipex has since come out with a new model called the Cobra Quick-Set which has the same ratcheting feature as the Irwins, but those are more costly than the already expensive standard Cobras.

The 10 inch version of the Irwin GrooveLock pliers will open to over 2.5 inches, and it's even large enough to remove Honda/Toyota oil filters. I frequently use it for that purpose, and it has yet to let me down (FYI, don't use pliers to put oil filters on, only use them for removal).

The jaws on the Irwins have worn only very slightly after about a year of light use, and I feel that these would last a long time with homeowner use. However, with professional use, I could definitely see the jaws getting worn down in a short period of time. The jaws on the Knipex Cobras are noticeably more durable, perhaps due to better heat-treatment or stronger metal alloys being used.

Overall, if you're planning to buy these for homeowner use, I would highly recommend them, and for around $20 for this 2-piece set you can't go wrong. I much prefer these to the traditional slip-joint style "Channel-lock" adjustable pliers.

I previously bought a needle nose pliers that worked great. These ones are even better! The grips they come with are always quality and look nice. On these ones specifically, if you look close at the picture you can see that it can actually lock at like 30 different locations between the 2 pliers. So, A+ from me. Will update if I ever have any issues, but none so far.
