Amazing tool for general and tech work
Amazing tool for general and tech work. I purchased "Victorinox Swisstool Plus Replacement Wrench" [ASIN: B000MF45KO] separately to have the option for more torque. I added 1/4" to 4 mm Driver Adapter to handle small bits.It has a better handling and more ergonomics than other multi-tools. The leather pouch can accommodate other flat tools. Ordered around November and cost $119.95.

Compared to the similarly sized and priced Leatherman Wave, this SwissTool Spirit X is truly in another class. Granted, I have a bit of an older model Wave (4ish years old). But my understanding is that Victotinox hasn't changed their product since then, so I am apt to compare it as-is.

First thing to notice, and the reason why I got the Spirit X, is the ergonomic curvature of the handles. So, so superior and comfortable to hold, and feels very natural.

Secondly, compare to the Wave, the Spirit X is about 30% thinner, yet packs in an extra tool! You may be led to think then that the Spirit X tools are thinner, but they are actually thicker in every category except for the Phillips screwdriver. Another great feature- all the tools on the Spirit X are accessible from the outside. The handle is hollow, which means dirt and grime don't build up on the inside. Yet, it has a folded lip for rigidity and safety (the knives are all on the outside edges, which are covered by the lip)

Speaking of the tools, Let me list the notables:

    Knife:
Spirit X: Blunt point blade, wide like a butter knife, 60/30 serrated/straight. Slightly thicker metal vs. the Leatherman. Serrations can be sharpened with the swisstool sharpener. Also noteable is that the Spirit has an awl, which the Wave does not. The awl acts as the small pointed blade, because it is also sharpened on one edge. Wood saw tooth pattern slightly different than the Wave, and a little thicker. The Wave's saw is pretty good, but I haven't tried the Spirit's yet.
Wave: Drop point, narrow like a pen knife, straight edge. Also has a pretty good wood saw, cuts through small branches pretty well.

    Screwdrivers:
Spirit X: Larger flat head includes wire-bending notch, and bottle opener. This tool is extra thick to be used as a pry bar. The second flat head is small, smaller than the Wave's. A micro flat head is available as a removable piece from the corkscrew, which is separately attached (not a part of the main tool proper). The Phillips head is long, longer than the Wave's but has a thinner base. The head itself is just as wide, but not as "beefy" as the Wave's.
Wave: Regular flat-head, and another medium flat head. Also has a micro flat/phillips reversible tool, which the spirit does not. The Phillips head is the thickest tool on the handle, maybe three times as thick as the other tools, but shorter than the Spirit's.
    Scissors:
OK, the scissors are hand's down better on the Spirit. They are more smooth, and safer. On the Wave, you have to un-fold the scissors, and they pull out by grabbing on the blade-side. To put them back, you open the scissors all the way so the blades are both flat. They work by pressing against a strand of metal and it bending back into place. Same concept on the Spirit, but more secure as it has a kind of "channel" for the metal spring piece. Also, it folds out in one piece, without having to "assemble" like the Wave. I've never used them on the Wave because it sticks/gets stuck when cutting through anything more than coupons.

    File
The file on the Spirit is thicker than the Wave, and is quite a bit more aggressive.

    Chisel
Finally, the Spirit has a unique wire stripper/chisel/box cutter tool. It has a chisel edge, which extends past one corner. It also has two grooves, one large oval and one small 'V' which are sharpened and presumable for stripping wire.

    Finally, the pliers themselves:

Spirit: slightly thicker than the Wave, but also slightly shorter. They don't come together 100%, and leave a gap. The wire cutter portion is slightly smaller than the Wave's, but it also has two wire-stripping slots vs the Wave's one. I kinda prefer the Wave's pliers length but the 2-3 times thicker tips on the Spirit certainly inspires confidence, and makes them easier to use in certain applications (and harder to use in others). The bolt-teeth pattern is also slightly more rounded on the Wave's than the Spirit.

Overall, the Spirit is slightly heavier than the Wave, packs more tools, is more ergonomically designed, and amazingly somehow thinner. The metal feels more solid and of higher quality than the Wave as well. A little bit less wobble (which is already negligible on the Wave). If you're looking for something different and more comfortable to hold than a Leatherman, I would try the Spirit X. No mentioned earlier, but the ratchet set and corkscrew all fit nicely together in separate areas on the very nice brown leather hip pouch. There's room to add another 4-5 bits, in addition to the 4-5 included.

    Thanks

I own about 20 multitools. This is an excellent product and my experience with Victorinox and their customer service tells me that if anything breaks or needs to be replaced, they can and will handle it. It is a bit pricey even if worth every penny. I'll be much more sensitive about ensuring it is secure than I would be about a less expensive multitool. To be honest, there's a big "gee whiz" factor to it: it has "all the bells and whistles."

I’m a long time leatherman fan, and still love them. But this tool is simply superior. It’s more comfortable (especially the non-pinching pliers), the fit and finish is nicer, the tools are generally more useful. I’m not a fan of the serrated knife blade, but otherwise this tool is preferable to all other multi tools I’ve used. Generally carry multi tool in addition to a knife anyway.
