Bad reviews are people that don't know what they are doing, this worked perfect for my 2000 Ford Excursion! If you don't want to pay for re-programming your vehicle for a new key and having two different keys different one for doors this is what you need. You got to be mechanical to use this, it is not easy to do. I almost sent it back and gave up but I found a video on how to get that little bearing and spring in easy (not). First off it was a little different. Mine had a different number of tumblers/inserts than the new one had. But it just uses what you got and what you put in. I did one tumble at a time with the "key code" numbers from the old lock. The key must have been worn down because a couple where not flush when the key was in. I just swapped them out with different numbered ones that were flush and it works great. $200-$300 job for $70 and 2 hours of time. There is a tool for that bearing and spring but a cheap ink pen works. Use the inside part that has the ink in it to push bearing and spring down. The center of that is the perfect size to hold the bearing in place while you push down and turn it to lock everything together. Good luck!

Life saver may be a bit extreme, but this thing saved me a lot of money. I bought a truck someone tried to steal. The lock cylinder was trash, but I had the key. I took a chance on this thing, and I’m glad I did.

A quick search of the web will lead you to believe this won’t work for you without a bunch of leg work. BS!! Everybody saying you need a key code that you can only get from the dealer, if it’s not in your manual… Everybody saying it’s easier to pay a locksmith... Everybody saying it’s easier to change all the lock cylinders… don’t know what they’re talking about. Hell, even the instructions can be a little daunting.

I didn’t have a key code and it took maybe 10 minutes to figure mine out.

Starting with #1 wafer in the slot closest to where you insert the key. Follow these steps.

1. Insert wafer and spring. Insert key. Observe the alignment of the wafer with the lock cylinder. Do this with all 5 wafers. The correct one will sit flush with the cylinder while the key is inserted. Write that number down.

2. After inserting all wafers in slot one and observing each with the key in place, you should be able to make a pretty good guess as to which numbers will be needed in the remaining slots. If you’re wrong, go up or down a number and try again.

That’s it. It sounds like more of a chore than it is, and it beats tracking down key codes, buying special tools, or measuring your key with a micrometer.

When you have a vehicle a long time, it's a good idea to let someone else drive it so they can tell you if there may be issues you've just gotten used to and didn't even notice.

I didn't, but I did finally one day decide to look in to why I was having a hard time starting my truck sometimes. I was worried I'd stick the key in one day and no be able to start it. Lo and behold, I realized the key was pretty worn out after comparing it to one of the spares. I jumped on line because the switch also felt loose and funky.

That lead me here to look for a new switch, assuming my tumblers were likely just as worn as the key, especially when a fresh key was also funky in the switch.

I found instructions and took it on. It's tricky and you need to be careful so that when you take the old switch apart you don't mix up the tumblers, and keep them in the exact order they came out of the old one. The code on each tumbler was also worn with a few that needed a magnifying glass to confirm the code. I wrote them down and laid them out in order, oriented with the cylinder in order just in case.

Long story short, I got the new tumblers in, everything put back together, back in the truck and wham! It's a whole new ballgame. No more wiggling or reinserting the key and trying again, it's tight and solid now.

Be careful with the check ball and follow instructions to a T. I almost mangled the retention spring.

The only difference is the metal used for the keys now. Not brass so maybe a little more durable, but took a while for operation of the key in and turning the ignition worked smoother. With new tumblers and key, all the sharp edges need to wear together.

Good replacement for Ford ignition lock, some trick to the assembly

I had bought an "off-brand" from a local auto parts store at about 1/2 the price that fit and worked but I couldn't change over the slugs (to keep my original key) from the OEM switch. The slugs fit the key slots but the internal design was incorrect and wouldn't allow the re-key tumbler to work. I was able to swap over my old key using this Motorcraft (made in Mexico not the USA) replacement part.

Re-keying is pretty simple, when you take out the old slugs from the tumbler they have numbers on them (1 thru 5). As you take them out of your old cylinder make note of the number and location for each slug then transfer that "code" over to the new cylinder. I couldn't read the numbers off of some of my old brass ones but I was able to compare sizes with the new slugs and find the correct ones. The kit comes with new steel slugs; I wanted to re-use my old brass ones but couldn't turn the switch after I got it all back together; not sure why.

Part of this lock assembly uses a spring and ball bearing as the "detent" (e.g. stop) as you turn the switch which allows you to pull the key out of the lock. The assembly of the new lock requires you to balance the ball bearing on top of the spring, then add a third part to push the ball bearing into place. IT IS A BEAR to do as the ball bearing doesn't want to stay on the spring; it just rolls off. Try a little grease or assembly lube (the sticky kind) to hold it in place. If you do lose the ball bearing the kit comes with two of them. If you lose BOTH of them, it is a 1/8" ball bearing which you can find at some hardware stores or online.

Good purchase if you want to keep your old key.

Very good product and gave only 4 stars because of the included instruction pamphlet. The issue is with the installation of the detent spring and ball, If you attempt to do this as instructed it is unlikely that you will succeed.
As others have mentioned the key is to push the spring and ball beyond the shell casing and into the small hole in the lock cylinder and then turn the cylinder ( make sure the key is inserted). The lock retainer can be installed after you have done this. You will need to find a tool that will trap the ball while you are driving it down into the lock cylinder hole. Some here have mentioned using the top end of a ball point pen, I think that might work. Personally, I used a Nail Punch that had a small indent which trapped the detent ball and was thin enough to pass through the outer shell. Hope this helps everyone.
