- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2020I'm obsessed with Orange amps, and like many people I have spent a lot of time and money trying to find the perfect pedal to function as a boost/OD for solos/bridges. I play a Gibson Les Paul Standard w/ humbuckers through a Rocker 30 or OR15 depending on my use case, and play mostly punk rock, dirty rock n roll, and some metal. I think what I've always wanted was my amp to sound like an Orange and somehow get leads to sound more like a Marshall JCM800. Tighter, more responsive, more percussive, and plenty of volume boost when engaged. The Fulltone OCD does exactly that and more, while preserving the Orange's natural character.
I mostly use it with the volume dimed out, drive at 0, and tone at 12 o clock for boosts, but there are several other usable tones in this box. Another journey entirely, but the OR15 especially hates fuzz pedals (probably due to lack of headroom). The Fulltone OCD with the gain and tone knobs dialed in just right (also with tweaks to amp controls AS WELL AS guitar tone adjustments) pretty much nails a classic Sleep or Sabbath-y fuzz tone. You can also get a wicked Marshall-like punk tone with the gain set to around 11-2 o clock on the pedal and the gain on the amp at around 10-11 o clock. It's very accommodating for the types of music I play.
If you have a similar set up and play similar genres, I'm really don't think there is anything better. I've gone through several Tube Screamer variations (Analogman modded Ibanez TS9, Maxon OD9, Maxon 808), and while the Maxon OD808 probably got the closest to what I was looking for I was still never truly happy with the way it colored my amp's natural tone. The inclusion of True Bypass on the OCD is also a win over the Maxon. I also went through a few clean boosts, like the BBE Boosta Grande and MXR Micro Amp. Both of these pedals function great for strictly volume boosts (nod to the BBE for being utterly transparent), but the option of added grit on the OCD for sustain and compression was a must for me.
Side note: If you want are going down a Fuzz pedal rabbit-hole with either of these amps, here's my advice. The OR15 lacks the proper headroom to get usable sounds out of a Fuzz pedal, but using an OD while dialing in all your knobs works wonders. The amp already has a pretty great fuzz tone built-in. The Rocker 30 is more kind to Fuzz pedals, but is still very picky. In my opinion, the search should probably end with a Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh. Lots of great tonal option with this combo.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2017There's a reason you find this on almost everyones pedal board.... it's versatile, well built and sounds great.
Now I'll admit, I originally purchased the Joyo clone of this pedal thinking that there would be no discernable difference in performance.
Well, now I've bit the bullet after comparing the OCD to the Joyo and found that just like Coca-Cola, "nothing beats the real thing"
The pedal gain goes from adding a light, but fat tone and some crunch, to all out, in your face, high gain with the turn of a knob.
The toggle switch will allow you to increase gain in the mid frequency and below, or the full range of sound.
The tone knob is basically a high pass so you're basically rolling off the high end by turning it counter-clockwise.
Tone is subjective so I'll stop at saying that to me, the full range of tone is probably useful to someone, somewhere, but I usually have mine turned all the way up.
The pedal is built like a tank like all Fulltone equipment. The knobs feel and turn like quality pots should, the footswitch feels fanstastic, the 1/4" jack inputs feel like they are high quality as well.
So you may ask, "What was the big difference between the Joyo and Fulltone?"
Well, in a nutshell, it was everything i just described. The tone, gain , switches and pots all just sounded and felt like something of much higher quality. Something that was worthy to be on a pro board as opposed to a novice board.
So if you want quality and want "the real thing", get the Fulltone OCD and you won't ever have to look back and wonder.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2017Modern pedal with a great rich tone. I have a TS808 that I absolutely love on my Telecaster through my Deluxe Reverb and super Reverb but not so much through my Vox amps (due to the mid hump of the 808) So I was on a quest to find the best pedal for my Vox amps and I found 2 actually. One of them being the OCD and the other being the TIMMY. The OCD sounds thick and Rich with both single coils and humbucker on Vox or Marahall amps. When I AB'd the OCD and Timmy the OCD seemed slightly fuller and richer on power chords and the Timmy seemed to have slightly better distinction and separation on the transients. Both sounded wonderful in their own right and closer in tone to each other than they were to the traditional 808 which when AB'd had a distinctive and obvious mid hump which was not that pleasant sounding on an amp that already has a mid hump like a Vox. If you own a Vox or Marshall voiced amp then this is a Great Pedal. If you own a Fender voiced amp then you may want to check out the classic TS808.
To say "this pedal is great" or "this pedal sucks" without considering the guitar and amp being used as well is absurd.
The guitar and amp you use plays a huge role in the sound of any OD pedal so make sure you consider those factors.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2018OCD v2
I have quite a few, the older 1.4 as well.
A good overdrive, can really crunch, scream, clean drive.
They have however moved the input jacks up to the center of the pedal, which depending on the layout of your pedal board and what precedes and follows, could be a good thing or a bad thing.
I like that the OCDs have a red LED (Hate having my retinas fried by blue LED) and also that they work competently on a 9v battery whhen you are keeping it simple.
