Maximum Neurosis -- the culmination of their pre-Albini Doom Trilogy

Neurosis began as a hardcore punk band in the Bay Area in the late Eighties. Then with SOULS AT ZERO (1992), they moved in the direction of slow, apocalyptic doom metal. They further developed this new sound on ENEMY OF THE SUN (1993). And in 1996 they perfected the sound of doom with this one, THROUGH SILVER IN BLOOD (1996). They toured with Pantera and Ozzfest and built a whole new metal audience, bigger than their early punk following.

TSIB is Maximum Neurosis. Tribal drumming, samples (which now sound very Eighties), psychedelic and electronic sounds, bagpipes, low volume passages with strings, all layered around the loud doom riffs and drones on guitar. Absolutely brilliant, it was, along with SAZ and EOTS, tremendously influential and was a key influence on what would become "post-metal."

Starting with their next album, TIMES OF GRACE (1999), they turned to producer Steve Albini, who helped them create a more austere, stripped-down sound. That is the Neurosis that I heard first, and I prefer it to this earlier sound. But it is impossible to deny the power of this sprawling monster, clearly one of the finest Neurosis albums.

Wow. Forget prog metal, this is beyond that, it's bold, fearless, and visionary. They take a page from Tool, yes, calm down, Tool, the galloping drums, and build around that to create something new in heavy music. Check out the albums before and after and listen to all three.

Dense, Chaotic Proto-Post Modern Metal Opus

I had heard of Neurosis for years, but had never really gotten around to checking them out. After reading a number of different articles in which bands that I enjoy listed them as an influence, I decided to check them out, and after a few spins I am definately hooked.

Neurosis' "Through Silver In Blood" is an immensly heavy, trance-inducing, and chaotic roller-coaster ride through walls of static, distorted, thickly layered guitars, bizarre samples and spoken-word weirdness, and occasional tranquility. I can definately hear the influence Neurosis must have had for many of the "post-metal" bands gaining listeners these days, such as Isis, Pelican, and even "drone" bands such as Sunn))Lyrically intriguing, dense, nihilistic and chaotic yet oddly serene on occasion, Neurosis write lengthy, epic and churning odes to mankind's folly. I can't wait to pick up a few more albums. Highly recommended.

"Through Silver in Blood" sits in that soft spot between headbanging and introspection. It's a very specific kind of metal, intense in a slow, deep way instead of being riff-laden, scream-driven stuff. I feel like they're a darker version of Melvins. Most of the tracks are very long, with varied instrumentation, deep tones and relatively slow tempos. I'm having a lot of fun with this album.

This is what heavy is all about. A beautiful soundscape that at times pulses through every nerve ending, and every part of your soul.This is the album that completely changed my life. It changed music for me, made me look at thing differently. Art, music, life, everything. Neurosis' music as a whole is exceptional, and Through Silver in Blood is something truly special.

Neurosis is a band that I had never really given a whole lot of thought to, even as my palette of musical tastes has shifted and expanded through the years. I had first heard of them after one of their members, Scott Kelly, made a guest appearance on Mastodon's Leviathan album. On a whim, I looked them up, and discovered that this particular album was the one that seemed to get the highest ratings. I also noticed that there was quite a bit of hype surrounding them as a major innovator in the vast landscape of metal.

I have to say, I was highly impressed - though it took a few listens.

The first attempt, I must have just been too tired to understand what was going on, and the album managed to help me fall asleep. The second time, I was listening to it while driving in my car. Ultimately, I can drive and listen to music, even loud music, but music that's easier to sing along to or just rock out to is preferable. Neurosis is not music that falls under that category for me. I was starting to wonder if the purchase of this album was a mistake, and if it just didn't really click with me. But that changed on listen number three.

I simply plopped down on the couch, put it on, followed along with the lyrics, and let it transport me. There weren't a ton of lyrics to follow - the songs didn't exactly use standard ABA verse-chorus-verse structures. But I started to not only HEAR the music for what it was, but FEEL it. The music, and the effects created by each instrument, meshed together with the relatively minimal lyrics for a unique and highly cathartic listening experience. This is something that a more challenging listen such as this should do. That was when the album finally clicked with me, and why it has become an album I will find myself listening to when I just need to lose myself in music. I won't go out and say, every single person should hear this album. You either "get it," or you don't. Simple as that. I feel lucky that I am able to "get it," because I am able to look at Neurosis beyond the hype now. Hopefully, anyone reading this review will feel the same way.

I like it, it's sludgy but with some industrial bits

This is the first Neurosis album I listened to. I like it, it's sludgy but with some industrial bits, kind of reminds me of a much slower and heavier Sepultura but more atmospheric. You can hear how post-metal bands like Isis got influenced. Favourite track is Purify. I think I prefer the later Albini albums though. At least until Honor in Decay which was a bit boring.
