I like the older show better than the newer one

5 Disc DVD set. Crystal clear picture. The Equalizer is a classy suit and tie guy, a British gentleman, who was trained as a spy and was one of the best agents around. He has all the knowledge and connections he needs to do anything along with vast experience from his years with "The Company". The collection is a 2008 release of a TV series from the 1980"s. Golden Globe winner Edward Woodward stars as Special Agent Robert McCall, retired and turned into a sort of private detective. Woodward does an outstanding job as he uses his special secret agent training, experience, and contacts to help those who don't know where else to turn. As a private citizen, McCall often bends the system to do things the police cannot legally do. On a mission to "pay back" in a special way for his lifetime of killing for the government, he helps those in need, usually for no fee at all. You get the impression that McCall has acquired so much money over the years that he doesn't need to make any more.

1) Pilot: The Equalizer (1 ½ hours?)
The Pilot of the TV series takes place primarily on the streets of Manhattan as McCall, recently retired as a Secret Agent from a secret government organization (CIA?), runs a newspaper advertisement to help people in need. He calls himself "The Equalizer" because when the odds are against you, he seeks to "equalize" them. In the pilot, McCall gets involved with a woman being stalked by a fruitcake and a man who finds a secret code at the telecommunications company where he works. Both are in danger. The pilot includes a car chase as well as some Manhattan scenery. You also meet "Control" and the Equalizer's son "Scott". A commentary with the show's creator, Michael Sloan, is included.
2) China Rain (approx 50 minutes)
In this episode, a 5-year old Chinese boy is kidnapped and McCall is called for help. This episode introduces character Mickey Klausmeyer, as Mickey and McCall go into the skuzzy parts of Chinatown to rescue the boy.
3) The Defector
McCall steps in to protect a murdered secret agent's daughter in this episode. He also helps a young man deal with high-school bullies.
4) The Lock Box
I remember seeing this episode several times before. A family of 3 goes on vacation to NYC and become quickly dis-enchanted with NY. Then, the young pretty teenage daughter, 17-year old Edie from Diluth, is kidnapped by 2 men playing good guy/bad guy. They are seeking to make a plaything out of her for those willing to pay the price. The police are no help and the mom calls McCall for help.
5) Lady Cop
6) The Confirmation Day
7) The Children's Song
8) The Distant Fire
9) Mama's Boy
10) Bump and Run
11) Desperately
12) Reign of Terror
13) Back Home
14) Out of the Past
15) Dead Drop
16) Wash-Up
17) Torn
18) Unnatural Causes
19) Breakpoint
20) No Conscience
21) Unpunished Crimes
22) Pretenders
23) Beyond Control
This is a bonus episode from Season Two.

I was deployed overseas in the US military when this program was broadcast and loved the premise, I had to purchase the DVDs and watch it now.
The DVDs arrived on time and were safely packaged.
I highly recommend this intelligent program and this particular seller for their timely delivery and contentious packaging of the DVDs.

Really enjoyed seeing the series I watched when my kids were little! Great stories and Edward Woodward is superb. I’m now on the hunt for the rest of the series!

Was great to watch this again. Loved it when it aired. The menus are very basic. And some of the music has been changed (I swear that 80s song Wild Wild West was in one of the season 1 episodes). But its still a great series with great characters. I just wish this show had the serial format and mythology of shows of the 1990s and 21st century - so many great villains or spy operations from McCall's past only show up for one episode and then never get mentioned again. Even Woodward's UK show Callan, with its low budget (video for inside shots, film for outside shots just like old school Doctor Who) managed to come up with a mythology and the occasional reoccuring villain. But still a GREAT show and much much better than that Denzel reboot (was hoping it would be way more faithful to the original).

One of the best TV series ever made. It's a shame it was only on for four seasons, but wow...............those seasons. I just heard that the long-awaited "The Equalizer" movie will be out in 2014, directed by Antoine Fuqua and staring Denzel Washington. The sneak peaks at the teasers look like it's probably a good film. However, it shifts to Boston instead of NYC and Washington, while one of the greatest actors ever, will have large shoes to fill to play Robert McCall. Edward Woodward was absolutely supurb in the role. "The Equalizer" prefered to use brain over brawn most times and use elaborate ruses and schemes to manipulate the bad guys into deep-sixing themselves. However, Robert McCall never hesitated to use violence if the situation called for it. The bad guys always under estimated McCall..........that was his strength. The bad guys never knew what hit them until it was way too late!

The one complaint is against UNIVERSAL, not this series. Season 1 was released in 2008 and then NOTHING.....for six years. Then we find out Season two will be out in 2014 but from another studio that purchased the rights to the DVD releases? Perhaps that's just as well, because Season one, while quite excellent in content, is flawed in the execution. The transfer to DVD was very sloppy and the video / audio quality not very good. Universal should be ashamed of themselves for not giving this excellent series the attention it deserves. We can only hope that the new studio that owns the rights does a better job on Seasons 2,3 and 4. My hope is that new digital masters will be made to soup up the video quality. The only season that was in stereo was Season 4, so maybe the audio will at least be better on that one. One can only wonder WHY this series was not released on CBS/Paramount home video, since this was in fact a CBS series? Universal Studios certainly didn't do "The Equalizer" any favors.

However................SOMETHING for Season 1 is better than nothing, so on that basis, I'd recommend it! Maybe at some point in the future somebody will re-master Season 1 and do a better job.

5.0 out of 5 stars McCall : Son of Callan
Reviewed in Japan on August 26, 2018
Edward Woodward, best known in the UK at least for his role as Callan, a disenchanted British government hit man, in the eponymous cynical drama, is excellent as a....well, disenchanted hit man. The difference is, this time he has been working for an American agency, and lives in some style in New York, and not a seedy London flat. Clearly, espionage pays better in the USA - as, indeed, most things do. Also, McCall is determined to redeem himself by becoming a knight in shining armour for hire, sorting out assorted villains and low-lifes, the maggots that feed off the Big Apple. And a good job he does of it, too ! Woodward is excellent, the scripts strong, and the supporting casts often feature established veterans and up and coming stars. Quality television.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great show...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2008
For starters, The Equalizer was a great show. It's also one of my favourites. This DVD release is very much anticipated, not least by myself as my VHS recordings (from when it was repeated on ITV in the very early 90s) are wearing out. I've ordered Season 1 as a pre-release, and eagerly awaiting it's release day.

So, why do I think it was such a great show? The show's main premise, of a semi-retired ex-intelligence officer (called Robert McCall) who hires his `services' to ordinary people, was a great starting point. This provided a refreshingly different take on the usual run-of-the-mill cop shows. It led to some fantastic stories, with far more variety than the more usual cop-hunts-bad-guy routines. It ran for 4 seasons - hopefully they will all be released on DVD in due time.

The show tackled some taboo issues well before any other show dare - there are episodes on HIV, child abuse (both physical and sexual), baby kidnapping, rape, deafness, blindness, learning difficulties and gun control. In fact, no other show has ever tackled some of these subjects, even since. This is along with episodes where McCall takes on the mafia, muggers, drug gangs, street gangs, Russian spies (remember the cold war was still on in 1985-87), a variety of hitmen, corporate bad guys, evil landlords, rogue ex-intelligence agents, bad cops, pimps, dodgy lawyers, peeping toms, ex special service soldiers, arms dealers, etc. In one episode he's hired to deal with a classroom of rowdy kids. In another he gets set up and is arrested for murder, but is then broken out of jail by his agency friends. Often, the main plot line is augmented with another interesting touches - in one episode McCall had flu, in another he'd already been shot and was still hobbling around, while in another his kitchen was taken apart by an inept repair man, which he then tried to deal with whilst rescuing a family from a hit-man. There are very few car chases - which says something in its own right.

Of importance was how McCall dealt with the situations. He planned his responses - never went in blasting (unlike many cop shows). In short, McCall was a thinking man's good guy, but there is also violence in this show - sometimes subtle, sometimes very direct - and sometimes more than you see in today's shows, with McCall quite blatantly beating or killing people. But the violence was always well used, never over done - and in more than one episode he speaks of his regrets and his disliking for some of the things he's had to do.

Other characters also played a major part in the show. McCall was certainly no one-man band. He knew lots of people whom he could call upon. His main sidekick was Mickey Kostmeyer (a much younger man still working for the same agency that McCall used to) but others usually joined in. The detail added by the other characters provided an nice extra dimension to the episodes. Indeed, you could quite easily imagine these characters each having a show of their own - the character expansion and depth was that good.

My favourite episode (`Dead Drop' in Season 1) sees all of McCall's friends helping a man who has been caught up in a dodgy distribution network. This particular episode is quite wonderful - it's very well written, funny and the interplay between the various characters is teased out with superb effect.

Despite some of the darker plot lines, humour was also present, with some banter between the characters. Various references to other TV shows and movies were also made. The shooting locations in and around New York City were excellently chosen. The cinematography and camera work was also brilliant. Attention to detail was fantastic. The accompanying musical score and theme tune was unique and brilliantly employed (composed by Stuart Copeland, of The Police fame). Edward Woodward's wonderful acting skills are demonstrated to the full, as was the skills of other cast members. The high production values are very apparent. I could simply go on and on.

The Equalizer can rightly be compared with the best shows of today - it stands up excellently, even now, more than 23 years later.

So again, just why do I think it was such a great show? Simple answer - it worked. Everything came together so sweetly. It's very rare for this to happen in a 45 minute TV show, but in The Equalizer, it happened in every episode.

UPDATE - 23 April 2008...

Having just received this, after pre-ordered for 4 months (!) - I'm disappointed with the picture quality. The episodes are great, but some of the picture quality is poor, in fact my 18 year old VHS recordings from ITV are better !! Some scenes are very grainy (much worse than my VHS tapes), there is evidence of some over-compression, and some of the colour is washed out in some scenes. There are no extras. Although I am a fan of the series, I think I'll be keeping my VHS copies!
