Great Mind-Bending Science Fiction

Whoa! Just finished and still reeling from the mind-bending explosion of imagination that is this book. I suppose I could come up with other novels that incorporate similar elements such as teleportation, high-tech viruses, memory erasure, and body-switching, but the brilliant way that these and others are combined and interwoven makes this story stand out as entirely original. As a film enthusiast, I can easily see this as something that director Christopher Nolan would enjoy adapting.

Would strongly recommend to anyone, regardless of what genre they are a fan of. If you don't read much sci-fi, you'll have to make an exception for this.

Charles Stross is on of the best ones writing sf these days and this is a self-contained pretzel of a novel that will keep you guessing all the way. I've read a lot of not very good fiction lately so this was a delight.

Interesting premise

As for pacing, little slow then rushes to the ending. By the three quarter mark I was half expecting that the entire story was just in a single simulation. Where they essentially could just continually boot up copies of personas / consciousnesses until they got the outcome desired. And it actually could be, who knows. But while the premise was indeed interesting, the way it went down in the end was pretty anticlimactic.

Great premise, but disappointing development

This is not a bad science-fiction book. But it's not a great one either.

The premise, and the concept the author started out with, are pretty awesome and made me hope for a truly great science fiction book: the ability in future to alter our body shape and function at will via "reshapers" and the fact that we could manufacture items at will (by just downloading them from a global net via manufacturing "gates") is utterly believable (I mean, with 3D printing, this is almost reality - and one would expect us to get there eventually).

However, the plot then rapidly devolves into a 1950s sort of sentimental drama (quite literally - can't say more, to avoid too many spoilers) and the initial amusement at the interesting literary trick of showing us how distant future generations will perceive our "modern" times to be "barbaric" gets old pretty quickly.

And, at least for me, the underlying "love-story" made me feel that what purported to be a science fiction book had turned into some sort of chick-lit drama novel.

Good ideas with poor execution. Plot was sped up and slowed down without much reason. Author seemed to want to hit on specific ideas and was in a hurry to get to each one with the in between sections disjointed. The interesting sections were not given enough time and pages to develop correctly. As a sci-fi buff, I don't think this one is worth reading.

No, this is not some sci-fi porn novel but another Singularity tale, this time hundreds of years after the Censorship Wars. The period 1950-2040 AD is known as the "Dark Ages" because of a nanovirus, Curious Yellow, that wiped out selective memories of a specific era during teleportation. For sheer inventiveness, it is rivaled only by the "Sky" virus in Alastair Reynolds's "Chasm City" that infected the victim with worship of a Messiah figure. Both stories have their moment of awareness, when the hero or heroine suddenly realizes the truth and the reader nods as he slowly understands also.

Future technology seems magical but even if one can live forever, would one want to in a society of cruelty and caprice, where one dies multiple times, loses memories or even their identities? The very things we consider human - our physical body, our sexual choices, our personality, even our memories - are all constantly in flux in this future.

As we approach the Singularity the rate of change increases exponentially. The difference between that era and the "current one" (2700 AD) with its emotional machines (nod to Kurzweil), malleable matter and altered appearance is illustrated through an experiment in which unwitting participants find themselves in the Glasshouse, an outer space construct set to resemble an Ozzie and Harriet society. The setting is forced at times - women had to wear dresses, cook and take care of home & hubby like Stepford wives (a big influence in this book) while men earned the bacon, wore suits and ties, watched sports and beat their wives. Both attended church every Sunday. Robin/Reeve, the hero/heroine, is only one of a number of former war criminals who had their memories erased and are now being rehabilitated. Unknown to them, the place is being used in a scheme to establish a behavioral dictatorship. While not as mind-blowing as Accelerando it is a much more cohesive story and the presentation of the unreal future is done so matter of fact it is scary.
