DISRAELI

Amazon.com

Anglophiles will find much to admire in the 1978 production Disraeli, a comprehensive look at the political and personal lives of one of that nation's most important historical figures. Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), played by Ian McShane (Deadwood, The Golden Compass) in a bravura performance, was "an enigma even to myself," as he puts it. Born to Jewish parents but baptized into the Anglican Church as a boy, he had already established a reputation as an author of "scandalous" novels, not to mention a silver-tongued flatterer and ladies man, when he began pursuing his political ambitions in his early thirties. His career didn't exactly get off to a flying start; it took him five tries to win a seat in Parliament as a "progressive conservative," and even then his defiant, blustery style earned him little favor among the somnolent stiffs who comprised much of that august body, some of whom dismissed him as "a tinseled coxcomb" whose attire resembled that of "an Italian dancing master" (Disraeli was known to sport lavish amounts of jewelry early in his career). Anti-Semitism didn't help, either. But he persevered, going on to serve twice as Prime Minister (the first and thus far only Jew to do so) and proving himself to be an eloquent and able leader with a dynamic vision that government should be more than simply a monarch ruling through an enlightened aristocracy (Rosemary Leach charmingly plays Queen Victoria, the monarch in question, with whom Disraeli formed a close and fruitful relationship).

The series also details his personal life, focusing on his 33-year marriage to the considerably older Mary Anne Lewis (Mary Peach), the widow of Disraeli's former patron and a seemingly frivolous chatterbox whom he admittedly married for her money ("I never intend to marry for love," he said. "It's a guarantee of unhappiness"), only to end up completely devoted to her. Along the way, Disraeli and his fellow politicians also deal with issues ranging from India and the Suez Canal to Ireland and the looming threat posed by Germany's "Iron Chancellor," Otto von Bismarck. All of this is accomplished primarily with words (including Disraeli's own, as well as those of scriptwriter David Butler), and there are lots of them. Disraeli isn't exactly action-packed--indeed, this is a genteel, stately, and occasionally rather tedious undertaking--but those willing to stick with it for its four-plus hours will find no shortage of rewards. --Sam Graham

The old rags to riches fiction.

I had heard a lecture about Disraeli and wanted to know more about his role in history. This DVD appears very accurate in following the influence of Disraeli's leadership as a statesman in England and opening up the Middle East for what would become Israel today. He was clever and an acquired taste as a statesman. Those that knew him respected him and relied on his oratory and integrity to lead Britain. It was interesting to realize the support, influence and love he received from his wife and even Queen Victoria.

The actors played their roles well. It helped to read up on Disraeli so you could get an idea of the era and background of the characters... the obstacles of being Jewish by birth in a country filled with anti-Semitism. Disraeli helped level the playing field in politics.

I highly recommend this DVD. Being interested in British history, I could not help running accross Disraeli's name. He is mentioned so often in the history of Victoria and yet no details have been mentioned in the normal historical writings. When I saw the DVD on him, I thought what better way to get a synopsis of his life, if it is well done. It is. A very interesting man who was so very unlikely to get to his place in history. Ian MacShane did a wonderful job portraying him. It is amazing how he was able to age throughout the story, as he was rather young at the time, I believe. A great story and well told!

I was first taken by Ian McShanes performance as Al Swearengine in Deadwood. But it wouldn't occur to me to research his filmography for another 4 years. In the interim I had run through the Deadwood series another 3 -4 times.
So I went on a spree and Disraeli was the first to arrive. I was thoroughly entertained. I'm not too keen on period pieces, especially the older british ones. I half expected Ian McShane's performance to dominate and it did. However, the performance of the entire cast was almost if not equally as amazing. I recommend Disraeli because I was thoroughly entertained and the movie has high 'rewatchability'...you know what I mean.

Very well acted---a compelling biography of one of the most fascinating of British Prime Ministers. This is an unforgettable portrayal of poignant theme; a true Romantic was Disraeli, and a brilliant statesman, master of the perfectly timed bold stroke, a master of the English Language, and an eloquent spokesman. Those who enjoy this series will be rewarded by memorable and painless history of the vital Victorian era.

I think Ian McShane is a find and serious actor. The costumes and scenery were excellent but the story was not put togeather correctly. The scenes jumped from one scene to the next without explaining how it got there. Just because someone in the story might mention something, that does not mean it takes place in the next scene. There were things that were taking place behind the scenes but we did not know what they were and how it affected the picture.

Enjoyed this dvd a lot. Told me a lot about Disraeli I didn't know and embellished some of the things I did know. While it is an older dvd, it was still entertaining and informative.

We watched this right after seeing the John Adams box set. Disraeli looked and sounded like it cost a whole lot less to make but luckily there is so much more of a story to tell. A brillinat performance in the title role is only part of the attraction. Here history is the star player and the maxim 'truth is much stranger than fiction' is proved true. Who'd have thought that Disreaeli could have lived the life he lived. And who'd have thought he'd have loved like he so evidently loved. Enjoy!
