- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2022Size: 3.0mm Large Pointed TipStyle: 6 PackPattern Name: guitar picksVerified PurchaseI’ve been using these picks for a few weeks and have to say, they’re very good.
I also have primetones and wegens, and every nylon or ultex size & thickness. These give a smooth attack and release without significant pick noise. They work especially well for me on funk-style or gypsy rhythm playing, even on an acoustic.
The tone is a little fatter than a wegen in my experience - not quite as bright. The feel is excellent - it remains solidly in place with the textured thumb indentation & smoothly releases off the strings.
I can flatpick, play single-note lines, or strum with this pick. It’s great for a price far below Wegen and BC, etc. The material still seems pretty durable - so far no significant wear to the only one I’ve used.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2013Size: 5.0mm Pointed TipStyle: 3 PackPattern Name: guitar picksVerified PurchaseMy favorite guitar pick has been the Dunlop Big Stubby 2.0mm, but that might change. Just bought some 477P505 and 477P508 Dunlop Primetones and the 477P505 Primetones picks are simply a joy to use.
The contoured body provides a secure grip and its 5mm width demands that grip be loose. Loose is good for fast; loose is good for accurate; loose is good for deliberate. If any of those describe your style or aspirations, this pick will help.
The beveled edge allows the guitarist to glide onto the strings, transfer some energy, and glide off like a thief in the night. The results are two-fold: the guitar strings issue their notes with a soft attack and your pick hand is guiltily carrying the strings' silverware (shame shame!).
If you're not used to picks thicker than 2-3mm, it can feel like gripping a piece of hard candy. If you're used to dragging more than a few microns of pick over the strings to transfer energy, the tactile difference can feel odd (I probably drag 0.75mm's worth of Dunlop Big Stubby or Fender Hard over my strings like a dog dragging its heinie on a shag carpet). The payoff, though, is brighter tones and a little boost in tremolo picking speed (and a loss of a gross dog analogy). Definitely not needed and some people prefer the sound of thinner picks, but what a great pick!
Also tried the 477P508, but that thing was hyooj.
Slight update:
Most of my experiences with this pick were with an unplugged Epi Les Paul 100. Plugged into a Vox 'Metal' amPlug headphone amp, two other features lept out regarding harmonics:
1. Tremolo picking with the bridge pickup is very bright and sometimes squeaky unless the tone is rolled back slightly on the guitar or amp.
2. Pinch harmonics of a Pantera/Lamb of God nature are a breeze.
Nother update - Due to the soft attack of the strings, I mistakenly said they added warmth to the strings. That was stupidity on my part. The attack is soft, not warm, and the overall experience is an increase in brightness. On naturally bright strings such as Dunlop Heavier Core strings, the softness of the attack offsets the increase in brightness, so as not to cause an avalanche of white noise. On naturally warm strings such as SIT Power Wounds, the overall boost in brightness keeps the warmth of the strings from blending with the warmth of a mahogany-bodied guitar in muddy ways.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2023Size: 3.0mm Medium TipStyle: 6 PackPattern Name: guitar picksVerified PurchaseI have tried a lot of different picks, different materials and shapes and sizes. This is my favorite. I recently started learning gypsy guitar style and they favored a much thicker pick, 3mm or thicker. So I tried this one out and absolutely love it. The grip really fits well and the edge is great for both lead picking and rhythm strumming. Really fantastic picks. Yes they are pricier but you would have to try to break it, should serve you for a long time. Also as with all dunlop picks made in USA. They have been my brand of choice for a while and this is now my favorite of all.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2019Size: 5.0mm Round TipStyle: 3 PackPattern Name: guitar picksVerified PurchaseI am a huge fan of Jim Dunlop Jazz picks. These Primetone picks are unique because they are thicker than ever.
The 5mm round tip version has the most dramatic bevel I've played yet. I'm not sure that all the varieties are all this way, but the round tip version is beveled only on one side of each playing edge (left if it's pointed away from you) not beveled on all sides, so only the edge that strikes the string is rounded off.
The craftsmanship on the pack I received is great. Playing with a 5mm pick takes some adjusting, but the tone is bombastic and well worth some effort.
If you want to try something different, and you enjoy thick picks, these are well worth the money. If you enjoy playing guitar with extra-thin, cellophane guitar picks, you might want to try something more intermediate like a Jazz III first, because the 5mm thickness is pretty extreme.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2016Size: 3.0mm Large Pointed TipStyle: 6 PackPattern Name: guitar picksVerified PurchaseThis is a decent pick. It's well made and the material is great. It's comfortable to hold, and it won't slip out of your hand with heavy strumming. The biggest disappointment for me was in the way it interacts with the string. As soon as it comes in contact with the string, even lightly, there is a high pitched click. It's annoying and it can be heard through everything I play. Also, the bevel from the flat of the pick down to the point is very rounded. This made it difficult to get a clear, sharp attack when I pluck the string. I do like to add texture to the front of a note by raking the edge of the pick before I pluck the string, but it's only stylistic and I don't want it all the time. This pick may be perfect for some players, but it's not for me.
