Excellent iron for sewing and quilting (especially for classes and retreats

I recently bought this iron to use on a week-long sewing retreat. Space is limited and it is nice to have one's own iron to avoid waiting in line to press. I set this up next to my sewing machine using the Omnigrid ironing and cutting mat station. I thought I would only use it for the two twin size quilt tops I was making. The blocks required a lot of trimming and pressing. This iron worked excellently. It generates a lot of steam for holding only 1.4 ounces of water (the water pitcher is the cutest little thing, like a toy). After I finished piecing the quilts, I decided to use it on the garments I was sewing. And I'm glad I did! The iron works well with tailor's tools like the seam roll, tailor's ham, and seam stick. I sewed all week with this iron and made four dresses, 7 pairs of men's briefs, 12 pair of ladies' briefs, two stuffed dolls, and a skirt. All using this iron (though I did resort to a regular iron for the long sides of the twin quilt borders). I like the long cord. Also great is the LACK of an automatic shut off. You can turn the knob to "off" or unplug it. Overall, this is a great product and an excellent resource for sewing retreats and classes.

One thing I am particularly pleased with is that the cord is wired in - not detachable. This means no cord falling out. The cord is 7ft long and perfect length. I have had no issues at all with leakage, sputtering, water drops. Be sure to read and follow the instructions about steam button position.

I did much research on mini steam irons before purchasing this one. It's all I hoped it would be. Lightweight, easy to handle, and does the job on most things. My intended use is for small projects and patchwork, so that I can sit in one spot to press as I sew. I use a mini iron board and a cut & press board.The only item that was problematic was a thick fusible fleece. I did finally ge it, but a standard size iron is recommended for fusible fleece. Today, I was using it and all of a sudden it started smoking. I looked down and the cord had partially melted through and was throwing off sparks. It dropped a bunch of soot onto my project. I unplugged it immediately. My concern is that if I had finished using it without noticing anything was amiss and turned it off, but left it plugged in, it could have continued melting/started sparking after I had left the room, and then I would have had a real problem. Or if I had turned it on to heat up and then left the room to do something else while it was heating up. I'm posting to encourage people who have this iron to pay attention to that area of the cord so you can notice signs of weakness and to discourage people from leaving this iron plugged in when not in use or when you're not in the room with it.

I have purchased this little iron twice, and it has served my purposes well. I sew and like to have a smaller iron in my sewing room. I have never used the steam function, because I don't trust that they won't leak (on this or any other iron.) Both irons lasted about five years with maybe slightly below average use. I do not sew every day or even every week sometimes. It does get very hot and it does not turn off on its own, which is a plus in a sewing room, but it does take awhile to cool down even after it has been turned off/unplugged. The cord would be more useful as a swivel cord, because it does get weakened at the point that it comes out of the iron from turning the iron various ways.By jrae75 on June 6, 2020
