Love this can opener. Aside from the electric opener, this is our favorite for a manually operated can cutter.Pros:- Cuts perfectly- Doesn't slip / Grips can well- Easy to attach- Easy to remove (just slight turn in reverse fully releases)- Glides fine on can- Large wings provide reasonable leverage for ease of turning. They are not the easiest we have ever tried but they feel to rank right up near the top of not being difficult to turn, at all. Better than reasonable.- Consume very little space / super compact without the long handles in the way - perfect for storage, esp. when space is a concern.- Great for camping or backpacking!Cons:- A little costly for the amount of metal but then again, NOT cheap Chinese knock-offs, either.Final thoughts:- Love the product- Wish cost was lower- Highly Recommended- Would buy again if I needed another - may buy another anyway, just for travel!
This is the best can opener I’ve ever owned, and well worth the price.
For whatever reason, it seems to be hard to find a quality can opener today. After a period of months to years (depending on quality), something always breaks, loses traction or goes out of alignment. I can’t tell you how many openers I’ve gone through over the years.
After a handle on my most recent “standard” opener broke, I decided to see if I could break the cycle. I set out to find something better, and this is what I settled on. It has not disappointed. It’s essentially solid steel, so I can’t imagine how I’ll ever break it. It cuts easily, so turning the crank isn’t difficult. The lack of handles seems odd at first if you’re used to the more common can opener design, and don’t entirely grasp how this one works. But handles aren’t necessary—which means fewer parts to break.
Don’t let the unfamiliar mechanism intimidate you. It’s simple to use. Just set the opener on the rim of the can and start turning the crank; the blade automatically digs into the can and starts cutting. Easy peasy.
If you’re tired of buying can openers every few years, and are looking for the one that’ll last for the rest of your life, this may be it.
I see some reviewers complaining about rust. It’s not stainless steel, so yes, it can rust. It will require a little bit of care, like any carbon steel kitchen tool. If you’re someone who insists that all your tools be dishwasher-safe and require near zero-care, and you’re not willing to tolerate a little rust, you may be disappointed. I personally don’t mind investing a little (very little) effort to maintain a good tool.
Update: I have been using this tool for years. It continues to work very well. It can occasionally be a little tricky on cans of very small size (think tomato paste) or slightly unusual design. It is not *quite* as easy to use as a standard can opener with handles, but it works great and it’s virtually bulletproof. No change to my initial rating.
I haven't opened many cans with this Nogent yet, but it worked wonderfully the times I did. It was kind of tricky to get it to latch onto the can my first attempt, but once I figured it out it works great.
The inside of the can gets pressed smooth all around, so no worries about getting cut. It was easy to turn and has large wings to push/grip in order to spin. This relives pressure on any specific point or on individual fingers, which I assume would be helpful for anyone with arthritis/joint pain.
Now just to see how long it holds up. My more traditional "original" can opener with the disc cost almost as much as this and lasted only about 10 cans before skipping in cuts. I'll change my review if this Nogent can opener fails any time soon.
Edit: Several cans in and I like it more and more. Works great on squared cans. Easy to get on and off now that I'm familiar with it. I may buy a couple as presents.
I don't usually yell in my reviews, but this opener is outstanding! Opens cans with half the effort of all my prior, and more expensive, can openers. I've tried all different types (including the "no sharp edges" side-openers), and this is better by far. Pros: 1) Less effort required to turn handle 2) Does not spin the can (which can mar countertops) -- instead it travels around the can 3) Leaves the inside of the can very smooth - helps food slide out and it's safer to reach inside the can 4) Does not leave any sharp edges around the top of the can (unlike some side-openers) 5) Works great with cans of ANY size 6) Takes up far less drawer space compared to a typical can opener (great for camping too!)
Cons: 1) The edge of the lid might be sharp (but it will fit nicely back inside the can once it's empty) 2) Might take a couple tries to get the hang of how to properly remove it after opening the can 3) Does not include bottle-opening or can-piercing attachments on the device, as typical openers do
This opener is fantastic for what it does. If you want something with bells & whistles, look elsewhere. But if you want something that simply opens cans all day and all night, this is the one you want.
For real though... 12/13/21, I bought the best can opener ever made. It's now 5/10/23 and there have been no issues, I clean it right after using (like the rest of my dishes) and I have no had to treat the metal even once. It opens so smoothly and doesn't let go of the can or mess up the cut at all. Turn the handle the opposite way and it lets go of the can. I love the design and how it doesn't take up much space at all.
If you are looking for a really small one the P52 can opener is smaller, but not really a house hold item - great for a camping application or traveling one.
FOLKS! I have cut open probably 7 or 8 cans with this myself, and it does a great job, but I have to warn you, watch for metal curly Qs coming off after the cut. I have not ever had a can opener do this, and I don't know why this one does. It is the nicest and easiest one to use out of any I have had, once it is started right I mean to tell you there isnt an issue except the cut will have a few metal curly slivers that we make sure doesn't get into the food in the can when taking the lid off. Seems like every can, varying brands, etc that this opener still does this on..... weird!
It is small yet comfortable to use, and opens cans with ease. This is the first can opener of this type I had, and it is easily the best one I ever had. Would totally recommend this. First one I bought when I moved, was from a known brand, it lasted 3 months and it spins without moving the cutting mechanism.... I checked some videos of these, and decided to try them out. They are really good! It cuts without much effort, super comfortable to use, and it is a simple mechanism that I can trust won’t do that spinning without cutting issue which is so frustrating. This simply can not happen with this type of mechanism because there aren’t that many moving parts or parts at all really.
