a little jewel of a netbook

when microsoft did evil things to all my laptops, i found this listed on amazon for a very low price about $90 or $120 i think and got it. the only problem i had was that all my other laptops had the control key and alt keys in opposite places. this was at a time when my home internet service and verison lines stopped working and i had to drive to find wifi to use the internet and my life was hell for several months.
there is not free wifi in the 1 1/2 half horse town i live near so i had a routime of stopping at the mcdonalds on the way to visit my mother. after having to call AAA when i wore down the car battery watching YouTube bigfoot videos, i bought 3 of the extra large batteries rated elsewhere that were really inexpensive. for a year it was a wonderful way to do things. yesterday when i got home from mom's visit, i put the nice laptop briefcasei carried it in, down on a table where i often out it when got home but for some reason on this day the dogs decided the briefcase must be full of dog treats and they knocked it off and it hit the cement floor from 3 feet, and the flap popped opened and the acer slid a couple feed across the concrete floor. i figured that was doom but when i truned ot on it was just fine.
my home solution for internet thurned out to be a T-Mobile hot spot with the free streaming videowhich since i use it at home i have less need for the acer. but it is really nice to have a set up where i could, if i wanted to spend the night maprked at the forest service discovery center on azusa and watch koren hisotrical dramas all night. i just have to turn the thing off after about every 7-10 episodes to change the battery and the hotspot plugs right into the acer.

Great Little Machine!!

This Acer w/160GB HD and 6-cell battery,(I ordered the white) just rocks! Mine has no noise from the fan. As other reviewers have stated, it does not have an optical drive, so I purchased an external USB powered one for under $100. The case I ordered from Amazon "Acer Aspire One 8.9" Mini-Notebook Premium Memory Foam Pouch Case with Front Pocket - (Black)", holds the Acer netbook, the optical drive w/USB cord, and my Verizon USB broadband thingy w/case. I even installed an HP Multi-Function printer for light home use using the AC adapter. (For on the go, with AC power available, the tote/brief case size Canon Pixma IP90 printer makes this combo a winner for traveling! I can just slip the case with all the goodies into a tote/handbag with the ability to view movies (DVD drive inserted) using headphones. Wow! Did I mention one can also use a flash drive for files you don't want to load? Very compact arrangement this little netbook has offered us! FYI, the one at Staples for 349.99 referred to by another reviewer, is just a 120GB HD and...only a 3 cell battery! Be careful when purchasing. Amazon offers the best price on the 160 GB/6 cell.

The best value for money in netbooks

The Acer Aspire One will some day replace your I-Phone and before you smirk in disbelief, let me say one thing "Its that portable..!!"
0. Battery: 6 cell - Works great for around 3.5- 6 hours, depending on
the various settings provided.
1. Screen: 9 inches works just fine for browsing, exchanging emails.
2. O/S: Windows XP has always been better than Vista.
3. HDD: 160 GB , enough store all your songs, games, movies. The
size of the netbook makes it a dandy portable storage device.
4. Network : Wireless is fast and works fine like a full sized laptop.
5. Processor: Intel Atom 1.6 ghz . Fast enough for simple utility
applications, like office, browsers, mp3 player. No need for the
dual core monstorities that are custom built to run some lousy
Windows Vista.
6. Antivirus: Mcafee 1 year subscription
Great way to start using the book out of the box.
7. Memory - 1 GB - just enough for opening a dozen tabs on your
firefox browser.
8. SD drives - 2 - Great utility, you can add a 32GB sdhc as your extra storage and use the other for your camera.
9. Webcam/mic - Built it 1.3 megapixels - very impressive. Mic though was a bit low quality, i.e the noise cancellation was good, but the voice as such sounded a bit weak. But is still very good for voice chat.

All in all a fantastic product. You will miss yer dvd drive though, buy an external one and things should fall in place pretty well.

Great little machine especially for the money

I have used this little machine for several years now to control my Camera & Telescope combination. The netbook very easily runs RealVNC (allowing me to stay inside on cold nights and control things), PHD (Push Here Dummy - adjusts the mount constantly to stay on target) and BackyardEOS (intervalometer to control the camera). This is really a wonder for portability and has all the ports you will need. Three USB ports, built in WiFi, an Ethernet port, external video etc. The nicest thing besides the portability is how long it runs on batterys. Fully charged it has lasted enough to run through two battery changes for my Canon 7D and usually lasts an entire all night imaging session.
