High performance without the high price
I own an original Inova X1 with Tiros optics that I've been using as a general purpose light for years. Even though it's a great light for seeing things that are within 30ft, it didn't offer enough light for seeing things at a far distance. I did some research to find a better flashlight and after looking at offerings from Inova and some other brands I decided to get this Fenix which for the price is awesome. I strictly wanted something that used AA batteries like my old Inova instead of the CR123 batteries that many high quality flashlights require. Since Inova doesn't have a 2-cell AA flashlight and since I use rechargeable Ni-MH AAs, this Fenix was a no brainer. The light output from this Fenix is phenomenal for its size. The beam has a nice center hotspot with a wide flood. Even though the beam is fully adjustible for a smoother flood, I personally prefer the default "dual beam" because it allows long distance throw while at the same time providing a wide coverage area so you could see more of the surrounding areas. The LED's light is white for the most part. There's no bluish tint like the Xenon-based lights. This flashlight's output is regulated so as the battery drains you will not get a gradual dimming of the beam, instead the light output will be at full bright until near the end when the light will immediatly go into a dim state. On two high capacity Ni-MH AA batteries, this light offers between 2-3 hrs of continuous high output light. The quality of this light is excellent too. The aluminum body is machined very well and the anodized Type III finish is very even. It's also waterproof and uses a glass lense with AR coating. I also like the tactical tailcap switch which offers reliable click on/off and momentary functions. No more twisting to turn it on/off. One thing I would've liked this light to have is variable light intensity instead of just one brightness setting.

The Fenix E20 is an absurdly bright 2xAA LED flashlight. How bright? You can read the other reviews and get all sorts of lumen numbers - here's a subjective test. I pointed it at my face at arms length, closed my eyes and turned on the light. Even with my eyes closed, the light was dazzling! Outdoors, it clearly illuminates houses and trees 200-300 feet away.

In the basic 2xAA LED class you can hardly find a brighter light. The tradeoff is relatively short battery life. I tested it with some NIMH AAs in the 1700-2000mah range. The E20 delivered full power for around 60-100 minutes then quickly faded to something like 90-95% dimmer. Even that low power is useful. The almost exhausted batteries then lasted for hours and hours - I got bored waiting for them to die out completely. I'm guessing regular non-rechargeable alkalines would probably last an hour longer.

The E20 has no setting for less than full on blinding light. You can get lights that have multiple brightness settings in this class - but they usually cost quite a bit more.

Others have mentioned that the batteries rattle around a bit. They do and it's suprisingly annoying. Other than that, the construction seems to be top quality - very sturdy. It has a good feel to it and it's easy to stick in your pocket.

It doesn't stand on it's end. But you can use an empty glass to hold it making for a decent room emergency light.

A few days ago I thought the on-off switch (or some other electronic component) had gone defective. The light might not turn on when I pressed the switch until I shook the flashlight back and forth. After a lot of testing and fiddling I noticed the batteries had a bit of tarnish on the ends. I polished them on my t-shirt for a minute and everything was fine after that. I guess the E20 is high strung!

The E20 package contains a nice array of extras. Lanyard, 2 spare O-Rings (one large, one small), a replacement cap for the on-off switch and another rubber thing that looks like you use it if you have to replace the LED. No carrying case. The line that connects the lanyard to the light appears flimsy. But it hasn't broken yet.* I haven't given it hard usage yet, either.

Summary - you'll take my E20 when you pry it out of my cold, dead fingers!

*Update 5/19/2010. The flimsy line broke under light usage. I'd take a star away but I don't use the lanyard very much. But something to keep in mind if you do.

Electronics is 4 stars - The flashlight is bright even on old used batteries.

Built quality is 2.5 to 3 stars - The one I received has at least 3 chips exposing the aluminum on the body. The batteries rattle a bit in the body just like another reviewer commented.

May also want to consider EagleTac P100A2 but may have similar "built" quality issues. [...]

    Pros -

    1) Impressively bright. If your eyes have adjusted to the darkness, this product can momentarily blind you if you shine its light on objects within a foot. If you bring the light close to your lips or cheek and turn it on, you can even feel the heat from the light!
    2) Supposed to be waterproof - not planning on testing it :)
3)Reasonably well made. The quality of construction is not at the level of a coast 1AA flashlight that I own but good enough. The batteries do not rattle. This flashlight cost only a few dollar more than the Coast, but delivers about 10 times more light.
    4) The light is very white. No blue/green/yellow tinge here.
    5) The light cover is glass - this is great. Does not scratch easily. Plus it has an antireflective coating to enhance light delivery. It sometimes makes you think that the protective glass is missing and you are looking the reflector and LED directly with nothing in between.
    6) 2AA battery usage is just great. Easy to use existing rechargeables.
    7) Its slim but slightly long profile means its easy to carry and not lose.
    8) Anodization seems to be pretty well done (hard anodized).

    Cons -
    1) Black color - should be any color (like red, blue, silver) other than black. Black is difficult to spot in a collection of items. I need my flashlight to "pop" out at me.
    2) A tad expensive - but then the CREE led's aren't cheap either.
    3) Defocussing the bead will lose light (in addition to spreading it around). The LED moves below the reflector and not all of the light is captured and delivered when this happens.
    4) The on-off switch is at the back and positioned such that the light cannot be placed vertically.
    5) The light rolls very easily. All contact surfaces are round.
    6) Does not use the latest and higher efficiency CREE led currently available.
    7) No evidence of gold plating on +ve contact inside the flashlight. Don't know how the product will fare in the long run. Expected better quality in this area considering the price paid.

My years old 2AA maglite now looks like something out of the stone age. Their light outputs can't even compare.

A 4 star product that needs minor design changes to truly make it 5 star.

Never worked quite right from new. Iffy switch. What I thought was caused by rechargeable NiMH was actually a slowing dying flashlight.

No way to warranty it - the company is in China.

    Never buy Fenix again.

Purchased this product about 5 months ago, used it sparingly. Great illumination, shines far and solid focus. Few gripes: the shape is a bit bulky and longer than it needs to be, no clip, only has one light setting and lastly, it just died. Yes, it has a 30 month warranty but you ahve to ship it back to China.
At this price point its a good light, the batteries last long enough and unlike competitor's lights, they use standard AA batteries which are cheaper.
If you really need a light that you can rely on and expect to shine bright as day for 100+yards, get an Insight light. If you want a light to shine around the house, in the car..etc, get a cheap LED flashlight for $5-10 and save yourself the potential disappointment and hassle of having to return this item.
